The 4:30 Movie Thread

Growing up in the 70s around Fairfield County Ct., one of my favorite TV memories was watching the 4:30 movie on WABC.

They used to have theme weeks, like Planet of the Apes week, Vincent Price week and my favorite as a kid, Monster week starring Godzilla and all the other Japanese monsters.

This was before cable TV and VCRs, when our roof antenna only picked up seven stations.

Any 70s TV fans of the 4:30 movie out there?

This was the later version in the 1970s.

I grew up in New Jersey, and this was regular daily viewing for me when I came home after school. This was where I first discovered such classics as To Kill a Mockingbird; To Sir, With Love; Bye Bye Birdie; and Some Like it Hot.
There was also Biblical Epic Week, Martin and Lewis Week, Silly Sex Comedy Week (or something like that) and other themes I can't remember. Because of the 90 minute time slot, a lot of these movies were shown over two (or more) days.
Occasionally, the movie was pre-empted by an "ABC Afterschool Special," but otherwise, this was a treat for movie lovers.
Unfortunately, the slot would be taken over by "Oprah" and other local stations followed suit; later generations of kids got stuck with that and with other daytime sludge such as "Judge Judy," "Jerry Springer," etc. At least there are
cable movies in the afternoon now.

I'm not crying, you fool, I'm laughing!

Sadly, taken over by Judge Wampter in 1981.

VCR's and cable TV packages were making the 4:30 movie an obsolete dinosaur .

But , In the 70s, that show ruled.

Actually, I remember Oprah taking over that spot?

I loved the 4:30 movie and that opening. Also the Million Dollar Movie on Channel 9, the WPIX movies with that great bongo theme, and the CBS Late Late Show!

I can still hear the theme song and see the rotating movie director with the camera in my head.

I can hear the theme song playing in my head right now lol.

It was usually Godzilla (or King Kong) marathon for Thanksgiving and King Kong and Mighty Joe Young (or Godzilla) marathon for Christmas. This particular thing might have been on WPIX Channel 11 or WWOR Channel 9 though.
