Ideas on sound recording and field mixers

Hello, I am putting together equipment to make my second short film. I am wondering if anyone can give me any ideas on the best sound recorders and/or field mixers for audio. In film school we use old panasonic video cameras to record sound while we filmed with our Canon Rebels. We were able to get decent sound and after some sound mixing through Final Cut, I was able to get good audio quality.

Thanks for the suggestions..

If you have experience mixing in post, do you really think the field mixer is necessary? They're ideal for field ENG because you don't have as much luxury of post production . I use an Azden SGM-1000, an exceptional shotgun for the price, and a Tascam DR-100mkII for recording. $500 for the whole rig and it's never once let me down.
