Why are some people considered country?

I really don't get it. More of the popular country artist are really pop and not country at all. Most people who really like country music don't like them at all. I can understand someone like Taylor Swift who started off that way but have gone more into pop territory but however some people don't even start off as country but are still considered country artists like Hunter Hayes for instance, I don't see why he's considered country and didn't even know he was until recently. His music kind of reminds me of John Mayer, not that that's a bad thing but it's not country though.

Just got secretly engaged to the best guy ever!!

What is real country anyways?

Dolly Parton is considered a traditional country artist, yet when she was starting out she was a country pop crossover artists, just like Carrie, Hunter, and Taylor.

The point is, country (and music in general) is evolving constantly. In fifteen years we'll have people saying, "remember when country radio actually played country, like Taylor Swift?".

Taylor isn't the best example because right now she's not tied down to any genre. She's musically diverse, mostly steering towards the pop side, but occasionally produces a great country or adult contemporary tune.

Country Radio and tv shows and networks are all about making money. That's why you don't see more traditional country musicians on radio or tv.

You know, this reminds me of when I got Jim Croce's 50 Greatest Hits, which was on 2 CDs. I had gotten his mucic before, like on Singers and Songwriters, and Itunes listed all those as Pop, including his.

The CD however can be found in the Pop section of my local FYE, and Itunes listed this particular CD as Country/Folk.

Ok. LOL

The only "real" country artist I listen to by some people's standards is Miranda Lambert and even she's on the fence with some of her songs. I agree with the OP that Hunter is more John Mayer then country though.

My newest favorite singer has led me to ask the opposite question considering the fact that his start was in pop music. To me, country music is where the late beautiful precious Billy Joe Royal should have been from the very beginning.

God bless you and his family always!!!

P.S. If only I had discovered him sooner, I love him SO much!!! (burying my head)

Check out my most favorite singer, James Otto, when you can! I love him SO much!!! (smiles)
