IMDb Message Boards closing down on February 20

This message appeared today (about an hour ago) on all message boards I checked:

IMDb is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb’s message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb’s message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.

Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb’s social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb’s editors and one another. IMDb’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).

Because IMDb’s message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they’d like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.

IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities.

Whilst this Rock Forum board was not as active as it was a few years back (remember those Top 100s that was fun sharing and competing), I will nevertheless miss this board. Maybe because we are mainly screen-philes (is that an appropriate word to generalize movies and tv shows?) who shared if not similar movies or tv shows, but our love for Rock music.

This board was also different from other board since the users were mainly those who have life experiences with the progression of rock music, and had (almost) nil trolls residing and spoiling discussions.

I started listening to quite a few bands/ singers based from discussions and advices here and hopefully, I convince the same to at least 1 or 2 members here wrt my likes and dislikes in Rock.

If this disablement does go through, will remember this board, especially during the peak activity. Alpha128 (I need to mention you I don't know why ) and others, thank you.

I'm guessing this is because I recall the first time I joined those Top 100 lists when everyone else was already 'acquainted' with one another, you politely pointed out the Rock Board etiquette such that it did not demotivate a newbie to participate. And the ding-dong 'tennis' matches we had. 

Yes, good times Izzy. I will miss the opportunity to share my love of rock/metal music with others. I remember when you told me that you started listening to Accept based on my recommendation. Comments like that, and the one from Elanor above, make me feel like the time I spent here was worthwhile.

As usual you seem to read my mind since this was my planned comeback when (and that's a 'when' not an 'if') you reply.

Rest assured, when I'm beating those bastards down, until they are hung, drawn and quartered, I will recall with my metal heart the unknown (in real life anyway) friend who introduced me to them. I've also had a better appreciation of Priest because of him.

And I'm sure you will still recall that you have not managed to convince me (and perhaps a few others as well) to listen to current heavy metal in spite of your consistent assurances of their quality as per 70's/ 80's metal. The reason is that I still feel I have a backlog of 70s and 80s metal to go through following the discussions from the Rock forum :-)

The reason is that I still feel I have a backlog of 70s and 80s metal to go through following the discussions from the Rock forum :-)

No harm in that. I followed '80s metal pretty closely at the time. So while I know I haven't heard everything from the era, I don't feel like there's a backlog I need to weed through.

On the other hand, '80s metal from the 21st century is currently being produced by working bands that can use our support.

I don't pretend that all current heavy metal is great. It takes work to find new albums worth buying. For example, I've been listening to a Youtube playlist of various 2016 metal albums, and so far 143 songs have resulted in 5 album purchases (a pretty pathetic, but typical, hit rate of 3.5%).

That's one of the reasons I loved to share my new purchases, knowing that the hard work I did could potentially benefit someone else. I'm truly sorry that the IMDb is taking that away from us.
