Nikon D7100

Just bought it and was wondering if anyone else with this camera can give me their opinion on it?

reply

Thats a pretty solid choice for a camera, in fact the probably most solid choice of a camera you could possibly make - so why would you need any second opinion on it ?

The main reason why I got a D600 and not a D7100 (or D7000) was because the glass for Nikon FX looks a lot sweeter than the glass for Nikon DX.

Thanks for commenting on my post. Im not sure what you mean by glass, yet. Im new to digital and im taking a class on digital photography aimed at the make and model of camera that i bought. I have a F100 and have the lenses for it, and was told that in order to use auto focus i would need that model of camera. So they sold me on it.

Glass means lenses.

DSLRs are interchangeable lens cameras.

For Nikon DX, the selection is quite limited.

The new mirrorless Fujifilm X system is only out, I dunno, 2 years ? and they already have a better selection with lots of really high quality primes and some really sweet zooms in the mix as well. Such as a quite compact 18-55mm f2.8-4 with image stabilization, a great compromise between brightness and weight, and 14mm f2.8, 23mm f1.4, 35mm f1.4 and the new 56mm f1.2 which are all optically awesome.

Nikon DX is like 14 years now or something and they still dont have much. The only advantage is their lenses are cheaper, but you dont even have the option for example for a 23mm f1.4 in the first place, so whats the use ?

That's a fine choice. I would advise you to get a 35mm f1.8 lens for it if you don't have one yet. It will improve your skills and give you better images, all for relatively little money.

Thanks, i'm going to take your advice and get the 35mm f1.8 lens. I again had someone suggest getting that particular lens.

reply

Well yeah thats like the bright spot of Nikon DX. Very sharp etc.

Unfortunately after that its pretty much zooms, zooms, zooms.

Nikon really should do something about their DX lens lineup, like a 24mm f1.8 DX.

Right now ironically Fuji X already has a better lens lineup for their APS-C sized sensor cameras than Nikon DX.

The D7100 refurbished is currently the secret entry into the top level of cameras - for under 500$.
