Why do we like monsters, so much?

For me, it's the amazing variety of monsters, from little-but-ambitious amoebas (the Blob) to gigantic, city-stomping dinosaurs (Godzilla), and everything in-between, like screaming carpets (Creeping Terror), malicious celery (It Conquered the World), and gorillas wearing diving helmets (Robot Monster.'

Let the Horror fans have their slashers, their Jason and Freddy and Michael. They aren't true monsters.

What are your favorite movie monsters?

- Crazy. All crazy but I'm.

I just about like them all, but I do have an affinity for Sasquatches, Werewolves and then a combination of extraterrestial/mutant types, like the Boogens, The Being or obviously The Thing type creatures.

Can't exactly pinpoint the logic behind the fascination with monsters and creatures but I can only guess that it may have to something to do with the appreciation for the outlandish and fantastic imaginations of the filmakers who are able to bring their ideas to the screen.

And the genesis of that fascination begins with the pioneers of creature fx like Willis O' brian, Harryhausen and continues right up through fx artist's like Rob Bottin & Stan Winston.

I suppose another aspect of the fascination is knowing that monsters don't really exist so it requires a greater level of suspension of belief to really buy into it which leads to feelings of vulnerability. It's like a self-imposed relinquishment of a person's courage which results in susceptibility to suggestion and to things that go bump in the night.

Plus, I like being scared by monsters and creatures. It's one the of the types stimuli I need to function correctly. Call it an abnormal mental deficiency, I don't know, but I like it.

My all time favorite would be Pumpkinhead, others would include....
1.godzilla
2.Sam from Trick R Treat
3.Predator
4.Alien
5.Torok the Troll from "Troll"
6.Werewolves, my favorite design being the one from "Bad Moon"
7.Winged Deadite from "AOD"
8.Pit Witch from "AOD"
9.Henrietta (transformed) from Evil Dead 2
10.leviathan from the film of the same name.

I think I'll stop here, as this list could go on for quite some time. I'm basically a monster junkie.

Godzilla tops my list. I don't think I can assign my other favorites any particular list order, but they include Pumpkinhead, Katahdin ('Prophecy'), the Jersey Devil (13th Child), Wendigo ('Wendigo'), The Giant Claw (same title), Anguirus, Ghidorah, Gappa, Gorgo...

Space Godzilla looked great, but he didn't do much except stand around and fire off beams and crystals; when two kaiju clash, they should BOTH wade through a major metropolitan area to meet up, then flatten most of the town.

I'd have to go with godzilla, but when it comes to my favorite monster design, I gotta go with Pumpkinhead. I wouldn't be able to put they others in a particular order, as there's just too many great monsters out there.
Those you listed are great too. I LOVE The Giant Claw!! I don't care if it does look like that creature smoked crack, he's aces in my book.

Yeah, I definetly agree. I had the same problem with Desghidorah/Death Ghidorah in "Rebirth of Mothra". It is my favorite Ghidorah design, but he just didn't do all that much.

Just gonna put this out there.
I think my top 5 favorite godzilla designs would be....
(In no particular order)
GZ 2000
2014
1954
Final Wars
GZ vs Megalon

How about yours?

My true favorite Godzilla is, genuinely, the original 1954 version. My second, and probably, more intense favorite, is Godzilla 1985. That suit was genuinely frightening; he looked like a big, angry, burnt charcoal briquette. The suit looked so rough and angry, without a single feature that would remind you of that 'Friend of Earth's Children' shullbit that he fell into, in the 60s and 70s. I was really impressed, though, when I saw him come out of the volcano in 'Biollante;' I could have believed that all the time he spent in the lava flow since 1985 might actually have streamlined him into the blackened Godzilla.

I forgot GZ 1985, but that was a good one too. I haven't seen that film since I was a kid back in the 80s, have they released it on DVD yet?
Speaking of burnt up, what do you think of the design for "GZ: Resurgence"? I was iffy, but it's starting to grow on me. Not really digging the tiny arms, but I'll get over it.

Yes, G85 has just recently been released, according to the posters on the G85 board. I haven't checked out the trailer on G-Resurge yet; I try not to sneak-peek things like that, because I want to be surprised when I finally get to see the movie.

What did you think of G-2014?
