I'll add that it can be intimidating to go to a sushi bar for first-timers, so buying it from an Asian supermarket and eating it in the comfort of your own home (or office) is a good way to see if you like it. You'll save quite a bit of money too.

All of the ones mentioned in the article are staples at supermarkets. Just take note of the date they were delivered.

Thanks for the heads-up. The only sushi I've ever tried is from a Chinese buffet in town. They keep it on ice and it's always fresh. I know the California roll to see it and I like it. The others, I'm never sure what they are. Some I like and some I don't. There's not always someone there to ask and I'm not sure they could explain to me, since some of them don't speak English very well. I really love the actual buffet because they have so many choices of food and a huge salad bar.

I've only had sushi 2-3 times and I can take it or leave it.

My #1 favorite cuisine. There are some great sushi spots here in NY for sure but the west coast is where it's at here in the states. Fresh, delicious, inventive.

For me, I hate these places that think a huge roll with tons of $hit in it, an onion salad and two different types of sauce on top of it is quality. It's not. Plus, I'm not a snake, I can't unhinge my lower jaw just to eat a single piece. You have a delicate, beautiful piece of fresh fish and you just kill it. Give me a piece of fresh fish, a tiny bit of rice and just a dab of fresh glaze and that's it. I don't like the wasabi you get a most places, but when they're grinding fresh at the table, it's to die for.

If anybody is truly a sushi lover, do yourself the favor and hit up an omakase place (a sushi tasting menu). You will learn just how good sushi can be when done right and it's worth every penny (a pretty penny at that).
