A note to the Powers That Be at IMDB.

You're closing down a great site due to the idiocy of a few people. I have one simple wish for you...when you cook or bake anything....may it burn.  

No, Amazon.com is closing it down because they can't make any money off of us. They can from the site they've described.

I was using IMDb last night as it will be used in the future -- as nothing but a reference site. I'd just seen "Watch on the Rhine," and I was trying to place one of the actors that I knew I'd seen before. When I looked at the page, Lo! There it was! A link to Amazon.com, where I could pick up a DVD of it! That's real worth to Amazon!

"Food and Drink" is simply a place where people who are interested in food and drink come to chat. You can't make a dime off of that. Well, you could, but then Col Needham would have to face the fact that IMDb really only exists as a marketing tool for Amazon.com. He still likes to think of it as what he created it for. But if you want to maintain control of it, you don't sell it to Amazon.com, do you?

Of course, they could line the pages with ads. But loads of adverts for Amazon's kitchen/grocery products would make IMDb's true purpose a little too palpable. Then Col couldn't swell around the next time an important celeb died and all the papers ran with IMDb as the only source about their credits and sometimes even their bios.

Now Mugsy, that very wasn't nice...

However, a little Polish curse seems in order:

"mam nadzieje ze twoja babcia wpada w octhlan gorli"

(without the accent marks) roughly translated, it means "may your grandmother fall into a pit filled with gorillas."

Amorous gorilla let's hope. 

It may not be nice, but it fits. As they said in Star Trek 2: Revenge is a dish that's best served.....cold. :O)

Was it Colin Needham's decision alone or was it the decision of the board of directors?

I will never let you part, for you are always in my heart: MJ

I don't really know, cousin. I guess you'll have to ask athene.

But my guess is since Amazon bought IMDb he hasn't had that much of a say in matters like the message boards.

IIRC, I understand him to be a decent sort, (I think I remember seeing him on CBS' " Sunday Morning" some time ago) and I believe if he had his way the message boards wouldn't be shutting down.

I think cousin athene has communicated with him...but I'm not certain. Ask her.

I'm not sure how much Amazon buying IMDb has anything to do with the shutting down. Count.
Amazon owned IMDb already when I joined the site, way back in 2005

But I still am stunned that whomever had the decision to do this, would do it in such a cold, callous way.
All these loyal people mean nothing to him/her/them. They think by throwing us a crumb of a couple weeks (couldn't they at least given a couple of months?!!)
that it means anything.

I guess the bad guys won in this case.

I also realized since the announcement, that its been yet another example of 'you find out who your friends are when things become grim'.

Some good friends here, and some acquaintances happily, have responded to my PMs or contacted me to ask for emails & such or just to say Goodbye.

While still others whom I considered good friends never responded at all.

So I hope that all the people I exchanged emails with can stay in touch & that I see the rest of you on other boards!
