In X-men when did Beast change from ape-like to cat-like?

I know that is was in the early seventies that he grew the blue fur and ape-like appearance, but when exactly did he change into a cat? I know it had to be sometime in the late 90's or the very early 00's but I never can find any information on when he changed again.

That moron writer Grant Morrison did it to him in his X-Men run. He started "secondary mutations" which made little sense. The name "Beast" reminded him of Disney's character so he actually ordered his artist to change the look. Honest to God. He saw that Emma Frost was "privileged" so he added that she could turn in to diamonds instead of just being a telepath. Stuff like that.

His crap was around 2001 or so and many people actually like it but I stopped reading X-Men at that time. Then, was overjoyed when Joss Whedon took over the book and returned it to true glory. Joss' run is still a true treat to read.

I don't think he did. At the beginning of New X-Men he is already cat-like without explanation.

It was in the 80's. During the Chris Clairmont and John Byrne run. The last I recall when the X-Men were entrapped by the Purple Man and they fought Magneto.
