I happened to be listening to The Cure just as I read this post. "One Hundred Years".
I can't narrow it down to even just a few 2nd favorites, either past or present. Too difficult.

That changes by the day.
Probably Pulp, I don't like much pre-His and Hers, but His and Hers, A Different Class, This Is Hardcore and We Love Life are all great albums.
The Who is right there too, NY Dolls.
My favorite band ever is the Sex Pistols.
I cycle through the Beatles, Jethro Tull, and the Grateful Dead as my #1, so one is nearly always 2nd. But I always appreciate the Stones more when I hear them than when I just think about them, so I'll say them.

The problems I have answering this question are that:
(a) I didn't have anything like an actual top 10 list until I started posting on the Internet a lot, and I realized that so many people think about things that way, so many people keep asking for a top 10 list, etc. (from my experience, it actually seemed like Rolling Stone magazine getting into a kick of publishing regular "Top n" lists starting in the 90s was a huge influence on people thinking this way)
(b) the artists who have more or less been my top 10 (in lieu of actually solidifying this into a list) have been the same since the later 70s.
(c) prior to that, I really have no idea who would have been at a particular number.
The Beatles have been second to Radiohead ever since I've been thinking about favorite artists starting in High School.
