Are Slayer meant to be taken seriously?

Yes, their music and the solos are intense. But the lyrics:

"God hates us all" album title
"I've made my choice: 666!"
"Religion's a whore"

I'm not really religious, but this is the kind of crap you expect to hear from an angsty 14 year old trying to be edgy, not fully grown men in their 40's and 50's.

No, it's shtick (most metal is, but for some reason only metal fans seem to pick up on this). Tom Araya is a practicing Catholic.

I mean, obviously they hope it comes off a little bit more shocking than "angsty 14 year old trying to be edgy," but you get the point.

Yep, agree with Social Assassin, it is shtick. Metal should be viewed in the same way horror movies are, often intense often a little scary but mostly over the top fun that shouldn't be taken too seriously.

I'd love to see pics of Tom Araya at mass.

About the only good thing about them is the riffs and (here and there) drumming. The solos are AWFUL. The lyrics often are obtrusive with clumsy word choices. Their last album of any note was Diabolus in Musica, a steady stream of garbage since then, and they should have quit when Jeff passed away.

On the other hand, I'm a fierce defender of Reign In Blood. Best thrash album of all time? Maybe not, but it's better than the detractors would let you believe.

"Worthington, we're being attacked by giant bats!"

Agree. It always strikes me as odd when certain bands who served as focal points for aggressive teen angst are still doing the same exact things decades later. Then again, they do have to make a living and switching over to jazz or adult contemporary probably won't work out for them too well.

Yeah, the attitude of most bands is a bit like you're presenting a Halloween attraction. And it's not just suff like Slayer, or Cannibal Corpse etc. that's like that. It was even the case in the hair metal scene. It's shtick, but shtick that people engage with because they love the aesthetic of it--it's dark and fun at the same time, like Halloween, horror films, etc.

It's also shallow, emotionless, and unartistic.
