Forced Diversity in Television

I find the inauthenticity of forced diversity in television to be distracting and lame. Give me realism. Agree or disagree?

Agreed.

No,I don't agree at all. As a black TV viewer I'm damn glad to see TV reflecting more and more of what society actually looks today, and frankly, diversity makes some shows a hell of a lot more interesting to watch---nothing "forced" about that. Most of TV is still white-dominated,so I don't see what the hell you're complaining about. The fact is,there are more black writers, directors, and producers working behind the scenes that have created these diverse new shows, such as Lee Daniels (Empire,Star) Shonda Rimes (Grey's Anatomy,Scandal,How To Get Away With Murder) Kenya Barris (Black-ish) Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project--yeah,I
know she's not black, but she's still a woman of color.)
The only people whining about diversity are usually white racists who can't stand to see non-white people anywhere, let alone TV. F--- -them----these idiots just can't stand the fact that society has changed, and that everything dosen't revolve around white people anymore, like it always has. What the hell is wrong with seeing a non white face on TV,or a TV show where the main character is black (like 24:-Legacy,which some idiot racists had the nerve to complain about) Not one damn thing. White people are not the only people on this planet with interesting stories to tell about.themselves---they never have been. Black TV viewers and othet viewers of color want to see characters that look like us that we can relate to,too. And we're seeing more and more of that, which is great. Screw the racist haters who can't deal with that--too damn bad. Ha ha ha!

sometimes it doesn't work, like when they made the white bungling photographer Jimmy Olsen black, and had the hots for
Supergirl, it sent the show down the toilet, most people don't like change, there are plenty of TV shows with black people, and they're still not satisfied, you say that people are complaining about the main character of 24 is black and you call them idiots, you idiot black people complain about everything, and if you don't get your way, you riot, you complained about not enough blacks in basketball, now that all the teams are 99% black you ain't saying shit,

Every black show that I've seen are just awful. They're stupid with horrible writing. And they make black people look stupid.

reply

I'd agree with that.

Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Great all black show. Family Matters was OK from what I remember.

reply

I just change the channel and watch something else.
Easy peasy.

Well, all racial elements that make up at least 1% have to have some racial representation of the US population on the boob tube. There are actually more caucasians in America than anyone else --but again as long there is more than one percent of another race of humankind in the USA that race(S) too needs representation.

What examples of "forced diversity" irked you?

reply

Agree. Absolutely lame, as proven by racist dreaming.

What an ignorant comment.

First of all, back in the "good ole days" of TV and movies there was forced segregation and complete revisionism of modern as well as historical America. The Ford Westerns that featured flawless looking White women and noble White cowboys reflected nothing of true historical merit and were completely fictional in their portrayal of pioneering era America. Blacks made up 40% of the cattle workers (cowboys) in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska yet that wasn't even reflected in any movies from the Golden era of Hollywood. The Buffalo Soldier story didn't get adapted for film until the 1990s and by black writers/directors.

Secondly, human beings have been intermingling for thousands of years. The only time in America where Whites were afforded more privilege over Blacks and other nonwhites was thanks to institutionalized racism, which again hardly ever was shown in movies back in the "good ole days".

Times change, and you either adapt or fade away.

I hate that this is even a conversation. Not here specifically, but in society in general. Unless it's a real person being characterized for a bio pic, why even cast someone with a specific race or body type, hair colour, etc in mind?? Other than the fact that studios and the powers that be when it comes to getting a story from paper to screen have to think about things like what will get the highest ratings and satisfy those key demos. Hence the hate part, because unfortunately as others have said here, we are still in an age where people have issues with who they watch on their screens. I get that if your story is about a (fictional) Male Olympic athlete in his prime, you're not going to cast a 250 lb woman. But look at Shonda Rhimes when casting Grey's Anatomy. She didn't write parts with race or gender in mind for most of them. And the result was an incredibly diverse cast with gripping stories to tell for many years to come. If we moved past that as a society, I think it would do wonders, but that's just me.
