All others either unseen, or seen too long ago to remember.

very predictable, but still enjoyable.
I see you have 2 films with Margaret Lockwood in your top 3; is she well remembered in UK ?
Outside of few Reeds, Lady Vanishes, and 1 40s gothic melodrama, I haven't seen her anywhere.

Sadly, very few British stars of the 'Classic' era are well remembered by non-film buffs, but Margaret Lockwood was such a big star, and continued on TV into the 70's, that her name may still ring a bell in a few circles. I like her very much, and have many of her films on DVD.Her films with Reed are all highly enjoyable, and she was also great in flms such as Jassy, Bedelia, The Man In Grey, and of course, The Wicked Lady. One of my favourite performances from her is in Cast A Dark Shadow with Dirk Bogarde, where she plays against type as a brassy, middle aged widow. A fine actress.

The Man In Grey - I've seen.
The Wicked Lady - need to watch. I saw the Fae Dunaway version, and imagine 40s version is better :)

>>Sadly, very few British stars of the 'Classic' era are well remembered by non-film buffs
Indeed. I've seen several 'greatest 10 (or more) British film actresses list", and it was surprises me how Deborah Kerr, Jean Simmons (not to mention Lockwood, Valerie Hobson, Wendy Hiller, etc) never make it. Sometimes V Leigh shows up at the end of the list. Sometimes Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn, but I consider either a British actress.

reply

It is my experience that even the biggest of the U.K. stars are less known today than their Hollywood counterparts, and I mean right here in England. Whereas Elizabeth Taylor, and Audrey Hepburn are still recognizable to people who were not even born during their heyday, the likes of Ann Todd, Jean Kent, Patricia Roc etc have long been forgotten. Diana Dors may still be vaguely in the public consciousness, but ask about the likes of Googie Withers, Sally Grey or Anne Crawford, and you will be met with the blankest of stares.

These actresses, and many more besides, are all very familiar to me, and I watch them all the time, but I am totally aware that they are (wrongly) considered irrelevant to today's audiences. It is simply, babies and bath water, the often sad, and transient nature of celebrity, and the passing of time*
