Leslie Nielsen.

What do we all think of this late (he passed away in 2010 at the age of 84, may he rest in peace) Hollywood mostly comedy movie actor?

Though I am not a very huge fan, he has been impressive and at times very impressive in some films. Airplane (1980) was brilliant, movies like "Naked Gun" (1988) were very good and I liked the sequel and thought the 3rd part entitled "33 in a third - the final insult" (1994) was OK, some like "Mr Magoo" I thought were average and forgettable and some even a disappointment that were ultimate failures like 2001 A Space Travesty etc. He even at least once starred in a serious horror film called "Prom Night" (1980).

He is or was a reasonably capable actor in the right hands with the right script yes, but with lesser project, not so much at least. But overall decent to pretty good though I haven't seen all 100% of his filmography.

You? Cheers.

Loved him and I admire that he’s an actor who could do serious TV Westerns and cop roles early on and in his later career became one of the funniest goofball/slapstick performers ever.

Aside from maple syrup and thick smoked bacon he’s probably Canada’s best loved export, one of the funniest actors ever.

Cool. What do you think of most of the films he has been in? Naked Gun and its two sequels? Airplane? Mr Magoo? Wrongfully Accused? Prom Night? Etc?

reply

Airplane and Naked Gun were hilarious.
The guy is a legend.

Seen those others? Including the two "Naked Gun" sequels? Also... Seen even those that have a bad reputation like "2001: A Space Travesty" and any thoughts on them? Or even the average "Mr Magoo" from 1997?

Love "Airplane" and like "Naked Gun" a lot, me though. Some others good and decent. But yeah some of those others were either mediocre and forgettable or poor overall and failing even to be funny (the 2001 A Space Travesty for instance).

it's strange to watch neilsen early in his career doing serious roles.

reply

Yeah, with one of them at least (Prom Night from 1980) being a straight horror film as well.

reply

Yes it is, he’s really not a great actor in most of those roles.

reply

he found his niche.

A freakin' legend!
Absolutely love The Naked Gun.
Without a doubt, one of my favorite comedy movies of all time.

I admire actors who can do both dramatic and comedic roles. I applaud directors who will give them a chance to do something different than what they're first known for. Sir David Jason is another actor who has been very successful at both drama and comedy.

Love him. A very good straight actor who reinvented himself as one of the funniest comic actors ever. Always makes me laugh, no matter how many times I've seen whichever film it happens to be.
