Are vitamins in general important, and by that I mean medical tablet ones.

Like, besides stuff for headache or any medication for anyone with any condition, stuff like "Bio Kult" or "Seven Seas" or "Pharmaton" etc for energy or somehow to get say vitamins for those who occasionally feel down and tired or with mild symptoms etc?

What about for people who are bored or have thoughts here or there that bother them and stop them from living life to the full or even those who feel POTENTIALLY depressed or with voluntary depression here or there? (Like MYSELF at times!)

Are they necessary or even desirable, thanks.

P.S. If you ARE HEALTHY, do you even NEED or can you take if you WANT certain tablets? Thanks.

If you eat a reasonably balanced diet you will get all the nutrition you likely need. You can always add a simple multivitamin like a Centrum if you like. You don’t need all these megadoses of vitamins and minerals people spend money on unless you have been medically diagnosed with a deficiency.

Nothing beats a great diet, exercise routine, social support circle and proper sleep. That said, all that can be difficult to fit in to today’s schedules, and regardless, most everybody is deficient in vitamin D-3, among others, so while probably not best to rely 100% on supplements, a few here and there couldn’t hurt.

For most healthy people, you can get vitamins naturally from healthy food. It's usually the best way to get them. But sometimes a little extra is needed. It just depends on what your body needs, and using your own judgement.

My mom, on the other hand, has a medical condition that causes her to have to take a lot of extra vitamins, in addition to them being pumped into her bloodstream every night with a TPN. She suffers from a long-term condition as a result of Crohn's Disease, called "Short-Bowel Syndrome." It came about because of the 9+ surgeries she's had in the past 30 years. She now only has a few feet of small intestine left, no gallbladder, and has frequent trots if you know what I mean. That, and she's in her 70s. So she has to take a total of 22 pills a day, 5 of which are heavy-duty vitamins (most are just repeat pills for bodily maintenance). It got so bad in 2021 that she suffered brain damage from lack of Vitamin B-1, and she's still recovering from that to this day. So yeah, vitamins do play an important role in your health, and sometimes you have to take supplements.

No. Supplements are big business despite not being crucial. Just like milk. Milk is not important for adults, even if it contains, like tablets, relevant nutrients. Both the farming industry and pharmaceuticals impose these choices on us. The food pyramid is a relic of the past.

reply

No, not really, my doctor recommends a daily multivitamin, just to cover any nutritional deficiencies that may be present. I also take some other supplements, like turmeric and glucosamine for aches and pains, iron because my hemoglobin has dropped a smidge since going vegetarian, and a few other things.

So I say a daily multivitamin might be a good idea if you can afford it, and other than that... it's your money.

This is similar to a question raised during a zoology class in the film Tina and the Professor (1995).
