What’s a really good horror movie?

Any ideas?

I’m not looking for one where a monster jumps into view and surprises everyone. And I’m not looking for blood and gore.

What I want is something that makes me feel like I’m home alone at night watching the original “Unsolved Mysteries” series, if that makes sense…

Frailty
The Others
The Exorcist
Rosemary's Baby
The Ghost and Mr. Chicken

reply

frailty is not horror.

reply

Neither is "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken".

reply

true. it's a comedy.

reply

Horror/comedy

reply

horror-comedy
It scared me, therefore I'll put it in the horror-comedy category.

"Why 'Frailty' is the best horror movie you (probably) haven't seen"

If you watch it from the viewpoint of the oldest 10 y.o. son, then it is an effective horror. Imagine the only adult around taking care of you is your widowed dad and he has become crazy. And he's kidnapping people, bringing them home and killing them. Nightmarish crap!

It could be a psychological thriller, too. Either way, they're both great movies!

I haven't seen "Frailty", but it does sound like a horror flick. Maybe hownos can explain his reasoning.

reply

I can see an argument that it isn’t a “pure” horror, but it is certainly a psychological thriller with strong horror elements. “Close enough for government work.” Plus it’s always great to see Bill Paxton.

Millennium is a good series

reply

That show used to creep the shit outta me when I was a kid.

Haven't seen it in ages though

reply

It has aged somewhat. Still a pretty good crime thriller with some horror overtones

reply

The devils meeting at a diner episode legit gave me nightmares. haha

reply

Every now and then I did out my Millennium box set and binge a few episodes.

reply

Is this the thing with Lance Henriksen?

reply

Yep

This is not the Christpoher Walken mystery series.

reply

That’s a good one.

Never watched Unsolved Mysteries, but here are some semi-recent horrors that managed to creep me out without relying on jump scares or overt gore:

It Follows
The Living and the Dead (2006)
Take Shelter (2011)
Noroi (2005)
Saint Maud
Grabbers (2012) [*actually a fun comedy monster flick]
Sleep Tight (2011)

reply

I'm not into horror but when you brought up Unsolved Mysteries, it reminded me of a 70s move called Black Christmas.

reply

The Scary Movies I and II.
