What did you watch this week you weasel? (05/21-05/27)

My week:

Torment (2013 Tubi): “Two parents find themselves fighting to get their little boy back from a sadistic cult, who have stolen him and plan on dark ideas.” Another low-budget horror film, from Canada this time, that wasn’t bad at all. I mean, the young actor playing the insufferable kid was , well, insufferable but we don’t see too much of him so it was alright. Here is an excerpt from the most popular review in IMDb: “The film is shot well, the acting's not terrible, there's some genuine suspense and a fairly scary bad guy with a little twist or two along the way. As an avid horror fan who wades through piles of crappy movie weekly looking for the hidden gems, I'd say this film will please most genre fans.” Agreed. My rating: 6/10

TMZ NO BS: DMX (2022 Tubi): I enjoyed all the clips and interviews about this favourite rapper of mine but I didn’t like how they sometime talked about him as if he was a poor little boy. He was a grown talented man fucking it up big time but let’s not make this a pity party please. His struggle was real indeed but they didn’t show enough respec, IMO. He got arrested for impersonating a police officer as he installed sirens on his car and pulled a car over. Who hasn’t done hat before shall cast the first stone. My rating: 7/10

The edge (1997 TV): My first rewatch since I was a teen. It is entertaining for sure but I was surprised how much my wife loved it. Even more than I. My rating: 7/10

Night of the living dead (1968 Tubi): Back in the 90’s I saw the remake. It scared the shut out of the 10 year old I was. First time seeing the original and I had the choice between black-and-white or color. I picked B&W to get the full experience. I have a feeling this one might be less scary than the remake. I am not sure, I’ll have to rewatch it before I can really say. Finally, it was nice to see Stromae in a big role. My rating: 6.5/10

Cujo (1983 TV): I always thought this was a movie I could dismiss but since it played on TV I decided to give it a go and ended up liking it a lot. It was entertaining and colourful. My rating: 7/10

Men in black 3 (2012 TV): I realize how much I had forgotten about this 3r instalment. I also realized it was better than I remembered. It’s so bright, vibrant and vivid. My rating: 7.5/10

**I hadn’t planned to watch the next two movies but Tubi was about to delete them from their catalog. The ones I had lined up were Day of the living dead and Return of the living dead. They’ll have to wait. **

River’s edge (1986 Tubi) : If you want to start your movie right into the thick of the story you better have well defined characters or else no one will care about the events. This movie succeeds at this and is a very good example of simple, effective and thrilling storytelling. The multiple sights of the naked dead body was disconcerting but let’s say that the actress was a good cast. My rating: 8/10

Rosewood (1997 Tubi): This movie was very well done, impactful and uncompromising. Unfortunately the acting was uneven and took me out at times. My rating: 7.5/10

Hello Mr. Keeper of the Stone.

Night of the living dead 9/10
Men in black 3 8/10

I watched:

Twelve O’Clock High 1949 7/10 Gregory Peck is good, but I didn't find the story as interesting or as compelling as it could have been. It also felt a little too long to me.

The Fighting Seabees 1944 6/10 I found this somewhat dull for the most part.

Murphy’s War 1971 6/10 A couple good moments, but overall not very interesting.

White Men Can’t Jump 2023 6/10 This was alright. It had a couple funny moments and the acting was okay.

Criminal Passion 1994 5/10 Acting isn't very good and the story was surprisingly dull. A couple good steamy moments.

The Little Colonel 1935 7/10 Adorable with some delightful moments.

Shazam! Fury of the Gods 2023 6/10 Not as good as the first, but some fun moments.

Three Came Home 1950 8/10 Good performances, especially by Claudette Colbert, in this effective and engaging war drama

Desperate Journey 1942 6/10 Found this slow and boring, for the most part. The acting is decent and there are a couple interesting moments.

Shadow in the Cloud 2020 7/10 I thought it was pretty fun. I enjoyed Moretz's performance and the gremlin looks cool.

The Book Thief 2013 6/10 I found this uneven. Some really strong, effective moments but much of it was not very interesting and didn't work for me. It felt too long as well.

Jet Pilot 1957 7/10 I enjoyed John Wayne and Janet Leigh's performances in this. Nice cinematography too.

The Little Mermaid 2023 9/10 Halle Bailey is fantastic as Ariel and Melissa McCarthy is a lot of fun as Ursula. I enjoyed the songs and the movie looks wonderful. One of the best films of the year so far.

Undertow 1949 6/10 This was just okay.

Street of Chance 1942 7/10 Burgess Meredith is good and the story has enough twists and turns to keep things interesting.

They Were Expendable 1945 7/10 Good cast and some effective moments.

The Flying Deuces 1939 Fun stuff!

Im surprised you haven’t seen River’s edge. Seek it out!

White men can’t jump: I loved this movie when I younger. Not as great on rewatch but still good. 7/10

reply

I've been meaning to see River's Edge for a while and have never gotten around to it. White Men Can’t Jump is the new remake, not the original. I saw the original years ago and thought it was alright.

reply

I wasn’t even aware there was a remake.

Too bad you just missed Rivers edge on Tubi as they just recently deleted it.

Hey Ferret!

Of yours:
Torment 6.5/10
The Edge 5/10
Night of the Living Dead 7/10
Cujo 7/10
Men in Black 3 6.5/10
River's Edge 7.5/10

My Week:

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) 10/10
Since I missed this at Metro Cinema last night, I thought I would watch it again today. I can't believe I hadn't reviewed or rated this here yet as I do watch it at least once a year. Maybe it's because I have no idea how to rate it. This rating is simply based on the joy I get watching Tim Curry having a blast.

Look Away (2018) 7/10
I liked this one. It wasn't the most original movie. It did have some pacing issues, and I think it was a little long. It also was really well acted, and there certainly was something creepy here. It's always nice when you like something more than you thought you were going to.

Beaches (1988) 6/10
I've always felt like I should like this more than I do. I mean I don't think it's a bad movie or anything, it's just that if I compare it to other friendship movies, it's not really at the top of the list. I can't really explain why.

Suicide Kings (1997) 8/10
So this rating is completely tainted with nostalgia. I just can't be objective because I loved this when it came out. Even Denis Leary and his fish boots. I still had a ton of fun watching it. It's so very 90s.

The Mummy (1999) 8/10
I've been watching a bunch of older movies lately because there just doesn't seem to be much new that is appealing to me. This is fun. It's light, doesn't take itself seriously, had some decent effects for the time, and a great cast. I mean what more does one want in a fun adventure movie?

But I’m a Cheerleader (1999) 8.5/10
'No pain no gain baby. You wanna like dick? You better start training yourself.'

I've seen this movie too many times to count, and it just doesn't get old. It's hilarious, and touching, with a great cast.

Poolhall Junkies (2002) 7/10
Hadn't seen this in years, and I was really surprised that this wasn't a 90s film. The film is pretty average, but the cast is pretty decent. I still enjoyed it, and it held my attention. I don't really want much more from a movie.

reply

I forgot I also rewatched Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, which I love, and I'm up to season 3 of The Love Boat.

reply

It’s nice to see someone else who saw Torment.

I’m also glad you enjoyed Cujo and
River's Edge as well.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show: I always thought this wouldn’t be for me but when I saw it about 3 years ago I had quite a blast. 8/10

The mummy’s been too long.

Poolhall Junkies is on my list.

Knock at the Cabin
Murder Mystery 2
The Jane Mysteries: Inheritance Lost

Feel free to judge me for the last two. I can take it.

reply

Why would I?

I saw Murder Mystery 2 too. 5/10

Have you seen any of mine?

Also, how would you rate yours?

reply

Not too big on ratings, I think people should go in blind as much as possible.

Knock was enjoyable although you could, as my wife pointed, see it a pro-Covid vaccine propaganda piece and that kind of tainted it for me. You could also see it as an anti-homosexual movie as one of the leads characters was pretty damn selfish while the other characters were the exact opposite.

Murder Mystery 2 was the first movie just re-skinned, pleasant lazy Saturday afternoon stuff.

The Jane Mysteries was all over the place and can't hold a candle to the Mystery 101 series.

reply

Haven't seen Murder Mystery 2, but I did like the Jodie Sweetin movie. 😊Go ahead and judge me right back.

What one weasel can do, another can do!

The Edge (1997) - A thrilling survival adventure with a couple extra layers courtesy of Mamet. 7.5

Night of the Living Dead (1968) - A seminal low budget horror classic whose societal undertones are still relevant today. 8.5

Cujo (1983) - Might have to watch that again.

Men in Black 3 (2012) - For me it works better than the second. 7

River's Edge (1986) - A harrowing and absorbing mystery with a stellar cast. 8

My week:

Love Crimes (1992) - One of those 'psychological thriller' movies with twists and turns... except not really since you can see each new absurd scenario coming a mile away. Sean Young gives a lot to the lead role as an intrepid attorney embroiled in a sexually charged case. While I can't quite recommend it, this movie aims for admirably lurid pulpiness. 6

John Wick Chapter 4 (2023) - Remember how the original John Wick was a crisp 85 minute or so action movie? Well, think of this as two of those back to back. For all the imitators this series has spawned, I wish more would copy the idea of well lit and cleanly shot action sequences. 8

Movie Pizza Love (2008) - I happened across this one and was intrigued by the meta-narrative. Unfortunately it's blatantly self-serving with long stretches of nothing in the form of witless wishy-washy banter or a folksy live music performance. Pretty good cinematography for a mid-2000s digital aesthetic. 5.5

Dead Again (1991) - A tense, high-spirited thriller with a Hitchcock-like supernatural bent and some playful performances from Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Robin Williams and Andy Garcia to name but a few in this stacked cast. This movie shoots for the moon in a dizzyingly theatrical way, and who better than a director with a bit of experience with Shakespeare to pull that off. 9

AEW Double or Nothing (2023) - Not the best iteration of this show, but it was nevertheless an enjoyable wrestling event. 7.5

I keep reading how Night of the living dead as a resonant social undertone and would appreciate you explain it to me in your insightful vocabulary. Because, except for: “ men are resourceful, paranoid and angry while women are useless and scared”, I don’t see much.

John Wick 4 and Dead again are both on my list.

reply

I haven't yet found the article/source on Night of the Living Dead I'm thinking of, but here are the major points it covers: For one, this movie was made and released at the tail end of the U.S. civil rights movement, so having a main character be played by a black actor as a capable, uninflected individual was still kind of a big thing at the time. Think of it as a time of walking into a movie expecting it to be The Creeping Terror and instead getting something closer to In the Heat of the Night.

Going off that same note, it's a movie that serves as sort of a turning point in the horror genre. It begins with kind of a campy/spooky bent with Barbara being chased by the single ghoul, but that escalates into a tense, horrific story of survival and distrust amongst people who are mostly strangers.

Then there's the ending, which I think works in its bleakness regardless of one might interpret based on other factors. The 1990 remake explores a somewhat different avenue, but it can be seen in a similar vein.

The edge was entertaining - 7/10
Cujo scared me as a kid - 7/10
MiB: International was disappointed af - 4/10
Night of the Living Dead is fantastic - 9/10

I only watched a single thing this week...

I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson (2019 Netflix) - The trailer did this show dirty in my opinion. One of the funniest shows I've watched in a long time. Genuine laugh out loud moments. Some of the funniest & most well written sketches in recent memory. 9/10

reply

I watched MIB3. International is the 4th one.

I’ll take a look at I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson, it seems worth it.

reply

Oh, may bad. MiB 3 is a fun romp & a wonderful end to the trilogy imo. A solid 8/10 for me.

I Think You Should Leave is most definitely worth it. A terrific watch.

reply

Watched the first episode.

Right off the first skit (with the door) I was laughing so yeah, this stuff is funny indeed. Thanks for the recommendation.

Your week:
Night of the Living Dead (1968) 8/10
Cujo (1983) 6.5/10

My week:

The Devil’s Wedding Night (1973) 7/10
A countess lures women to her castle to drink their blood. Early 70s Italian Gothic horror with the beautiful Rosalba Neri as the countess. Genre fans will love this.

Code Name: Wild Geese (1984) 7/10
A group of mercenaries try to overthrow an opium dealing dictator in south east Asia. Antonio Margheriti directs this cheap macaroni combat film filled with recognizable character actors complete with special effects pulled off using miniatures. Lots of fun.

The Strange Vice of Mrs Wardh (1971) 8/10
A blackmailed heiress tries to solve a murder plot. Fantastic Sergio Martino giallo here with a great cast lead by the undisputed queen of the genre, Edwige Fenech. Highly recommended.

Bad Black (2016) 6/10
A family heirloom must be recovered from a dangerous gang. A crazy Ugandan commando tale brought to us by the makers of Who Killed Captain Alex? (2010). The humorous narration in this one is great.

Living (2022) - Bill Nighy who I didn't really know got an Oscar nom for his performance in this. He was very good. Reminded me of Anthony Hopkins in The Father from a few years ago. 7/10

Les Misérables (1935) - The best adaptation. Charles Laughton wasn't nominated for his performance as Javert which was a crime. 7.5/10
