How would you define a great actor?

I’d say someone who makes you believe he is the characters you watch on screen.
+ if it’s comedy someone who has a good comedic timing and can deliver good laughs

When you totally believe the character dhislt knowing their previous work. The one who springs to mind is Joe Pesci. Equally fabulous in Home Alone and Goodfellas. There are many who fit this category.

Some actors get typecast. Probably not their fault, but when you can change between comedy and full on thug and still be believable, that shows a great actor to me.

Another one is Jim Carrey. I grew up on his "goofy movies". When I saw him in a serious/dramatic role, I was legit blown away.

He was absolutely fantastic in The Truman Show. And equally excellent in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

People who make it look easy like they've been doing that role for years.

Daniel Day Lewis is "Scary Good". Like he never fails to amaze me.

I'm not sure I could define what makes an actor great but I know a great actor when I see one.

Someone who makes you forget you are watching a performance.

^ This. Works for movies too!

A good/very good actor is one who can convincingly/compellingly inhabit a role/roles. The great actor can do at that level with a variety of different sorts of characters. Actors that can do comedy as well as drama is a good marker of versatility, but only one.

Are they or are they not Alan Richkman?????????

Versitility and believability.

Some of my favourites - Gary Oldman. Robin Williams. John Malkovich. Christian Bale.

There are a few others but they are mostly typecast but the above give a great range of skills.
