Is San Francisco really that bad nowadays?

I was last there around 2014/15 and loved it... but now I read that there is homeless people on every street corner, theft, trash.

Is this true or are upscale/tourist areas still well kept?

reply

IDK. I haven't really been in the city proper since the late 70's. From all accounts, it sounds like the bad areas have gotten worse & that it's bleeding over into the more "tourist" areas.

My dad and I went on at least 3 day visits in the past 5 years, and the last 2 were very recent. The tourist areas are okay, just don't go there at night, and stay away from specific spots like Porkchop Hill and City Hall. I hear the city has become an open sewer in those areas. I think they keep most of the homeless away from places like Pier 39, Fisherman's Warf, Ghirardelli Square, most of Chinatown, and Golden Gate Park. I've only ever seen 1-3 when in the tourist areas.

reply

Those areas you mention are exactly where I spent most of my time when I've been there... basically those, some museums, restaurants, Palace of Fine Arts, I think we also went to the Japanese Tea Garden which is by Golden Gate Park... so it seems it won't be the apocalyptic videos I've watched on social media the last couple of years.

I have also been seeing that car break ins are extremely common... sad. =(

Well, dad and I had to drive around quite a bit to find the Academy of Sciences as well as Pier 39, and I can totally get why car break-ins and porch pirates are so common.

I mean, I saw a lot of those stacked houses SF is famous for, and sadly, a lot of them either don't have garages at all, or they're a 1-car garage designed for a small car, which is kinda ridiculous in my opinion. Rarely do you see a 2-car garage at the bottom of those houses unless it's a large townhouse. (They really like stacking people's homes together like cubby holes there). So many people are forced to park their cars in the street, leading to streets that have whole lines of parked cars on the sides, and it makes it far too easy for homeless and/or criminals to break in.

The construction of houses I mentioned above also is why porch pirates are so common. I remember walking with dad back to the parking garage from Ghirardelli Square during one of our visits, (which was quite a hike if you ask me), and I pointed out to him how almost nobody in the nearby neighborhoods has a front yard. I mean, if you're in one of those houses, it's your front door, maybe a porch, some steps, the sidewalk, and then the street. Basically it would be way too easy for someone (maybe a homeless person and/or a criminal) to just go up there and grab the package while the poor recipient is away at work or just away from home. Small wonder many San Franciscans now pay extra for special mailing services that can safely hold their packages until the customers can go pick them up.

I watch a youtuber named Nerdrotic who used to live in San Francisco and he moved out just a year or 2 ago, simply because he and his wife couldn't stand the city and it's BS anymore.

reply

Nerdrotic is awesome. I was born in SF, used to spend good time there. I wouldn't go back there now under any circumstances.

I read about all that before I planned my last vacation there. Of course it was exaggerated. There's an agenda in the rightwing news media to exaggerate everything. I hope it keeps their ilk away from busy tourist spots.

U just spend all ur time in the tourist parts and probably went to bed at a reasonable time. It is worst than the media shows. The tv will show u the sight of it all, but the SMELL is something that is truly HELLISH and cant be recreated on the tv

reply

HAHAHAHAHAHA! You're such a buffoon. Don't step in any human feces.

reply

it is completely fucked to shit. I been to more dangerous places but NOWHERE is as DISGUSTING as San Franshitsco. the smell of piss and shit is hellish. Junkies smoking crack and injecting needles on the side walk. Dirtier than ghettos of Peru or Bolivia. Maybe safer than those places but way way way more chaotic and disorderly. The smell of shit is what really gets me

I live 90 min away and visit frequently, and am going on Sunday. The city has had a homeless population since the "Summer of Love" in the 1960s, which has gotten notably worse in the last 5 years, as the cost of housing has skyrocketed and low-income housing is almost extinct. Larger population of people living in tents, more parks and neighborhoods affected, growing retail theft problem as the dipshit DA has stopped prosecuting, but the fact is on most of my visits you'd think nothing had changed, my recent trips to the Civic Center and Golden Gate park have been free of anything unsightly or any worries above the usual level of big-city worries.

So I'm still going on Sunday, and consider the city as tourist-friendly as most major cities. Just stay the fuck away from the Tenderlion.

reply

So I actually went to SF yesterday, not an extensive trip, just going to an event and dinner in the afternoon and evening. Passing by the area near City Hall, which someone above described as a no-go zone, I saw three homeless people and hundreds of prosperous citizens on the street. Same as most of my trips.

Because I stay away from the bad areas, like the Tenderloin. Don't even set foot there.
