What's the most you would pay for a watch?

I've never been an extravagant person and always lean towards being frugal, but sometimes its nice to have nice things, right? I want to upgrade from my Citizen Eco-Drive and have been eyeing an Oris, but that's gonna cost a lot of cheese!

My husband loves to buy the $10 watches sold on cruise ships - he wears them out in the yard and doing work around the house. He had one that ran for at least 4 years before the battery finally gave out. We still laugh about that - replacement batteries cost more than the watch.

I bought a $5 bootleg watch off the street in 1999 on a school trip. It was laughably bad but I loved it.

Those watch displays on cruises are dangerous. People get a few drinks in them and make impulse buys haha.

reply

No sure. It depends. I think $1000 is too much, but I would pay good money for a decent watch. I love wearing a watch.

reply

Depends on what we’re watching. If it’s something I’ve already seen before then no more than a few bucks. If i haven’t seen it before then max 10 bucks.

I have a collection of Breitlings and a couple of Versaces. I would happily pay up to £20000 for a watch.

I considered the Breitling Aviator 8 Automatic 41.

IDK, 20 Gs. Should be worth enough that you can trade it to a warlord to stay out of his gulag.

I would pay thousands for a old broken watch with similar scrap metal value. Never owned a watch since its annoying to have something on your hand but an old gold one would be cool fashion

reply

I'm not cool enough to pull off wearing gold. I do like vintage though.

Whatever a Rolex cost. I will own one before I die.

reply

May I recommend a previously owned one?

WOW, the price difference is so extreme. I'm not against that idea at all. It is pretty ridiculous to pay so much for a watch. Thanks for the link!

When I was a kid/teen/young adult I was fascinated by the Day-Date model. Something about the day being spelled out seemed very special. In gold, of course. Now that I am on the cusp of senior citizen status, it's more than I want to spend, and I'd probably be afraid to wear the damn thing.

reply

I like Rolex, but don't like the elitism of having to get on a list and possibly wait years, depending on the model.

reply

I haven't worn a watch in years. When I did, don't think I paid more than $20-30 at the most.
