There are a few Letterboxd users here. Here is mine:

I am one too.

I have it but don't really use it.

I prefer IMDB though it lacks the social media interaction capabilities of Letterboxd which is a shame (damn Amazon for shutting down the boards) which is why I post here and made an LB to scratch that itch.

If you really want I can PM you mine (don't want to post it publicly on here as I don't want every weirdo following me on it).

THAT'S WEIRD,BRO.

I do miss the imdb boards. It felt a lot more expansive. This site doesn't have enough people, and so many that are here are only out to argue or rant about politics. Is there another site that has filled the imdb boards void?

Yes, pm me your letterboxd and I'll do the same. We can compare movie notes!

From what I gather most other sites that filled the IMDB void are worse than this one, troll havens with very small user groups.

Reddit is probably the best place, it has several sub-reddits dedicated to specific genres or franchises. Moderation there is very heavy though. I used to post on the horror sub-reddit but had to leave as I soon realized I was mostly surrounded by 16 year olds who have only seen about 25 horror films in their life. It used to be a decent place but the userbase swelled due to constant influxes of novices, the place got extremely diluted and the up-vote down-vote nature of it annoys me. I got downvoted several times for correcting people on their ignorance. The whole thing appeals to 'circle jerk' mentalities where people are only looking for others who share their opinion to pat them on the back.

I'm not the biggest fan of Letterboxd due to the very sassy and "I made a funny" nature of many posters. IMDB reviewers review films in earnest whilst many Letterboxd users make jokes to try get likes.

Part of me wishes there was some forum for dedicated horror fans who have seen several hundred films to discuss the genre. Some elite horror fan club. I keep tabs on a few prolific reviewers on IMDB, some of those dudes have been on that site for 20 years now and review several horror films every week. When you keep an eye on some people you soon know their tastes and understand what a 7/10 from them means and how it corresponds with your own tastes.

I agree that Reddit is difficult because of the mob mentality there. I haven't noticed much of what you mention about Letterboxd, but then I don't look at many reviews. I prefer a site like this, where there is a format for many people to have a conversation about a film.

I'm surprised there aren't more forums for horror film fans. It seems like one of the most popular film genres, maybe even the most popular. Meanwhile, I'm primarily into films made between 1915-1945, and don't really know anywhere online to find large groups of likeminded fans.

reply

Films from 1915 - 1945? Yeah you're out of luck there pal. Many of the teens and young adults online haven't watched films that old.

The problem is the forums are fractured. I've come across a few ones for franchises like Friday the 13th but the userbase is miniscule. They're practically dead. Forums ain't what they used to be.

Reddits F13 sub-reddit is relatively popular but most of it is the same topics over and over again some of which are worthless really. Also as discussed the moderation is heavy and it's just a mob mentality which pushes out any dissension. People make topics asking for 'unpopular opinions' and you'll get downvoted into oblivion for sharing yours. Worthless system.

Letterboxd is insufferable for me, when I scroll through reviews I want to beat my head against the screen. Some good users on there but so many of them annoy me. Part of it is generational/cultural. Letterboxd is very popular with young left-leaning college kids.

LB also has a like system and many popular reviewers on that site are utterly useless. All they do is make one line jokes as reviews and they get thousands of likes. It baffles me. It's a lot of people 'meme-ing'.

IMDB is still the best, the actual reviews are about the films and are almost always serious in nature. The good reviewers will write paragraphs each time. By far the best movie reviewers I have come across. The old IMDB boards had trolls, especially on recent releases and really popular films but they were so active and the users had so much knowledge. I doubt we'll ever see anything like it again.

I use Letterboxd mostly as a film diary to track what films I watch, and when/where I watch them. I follow a few people, but don't read many reviews. I mostly look at other people's accounts to learn about the existence of films I've yet to discover, often through the lists people make. And I've made a few lists of my own, but more for my own records than what I think will be of much use to anyone else.

Moviechat is where I go to discuss film, but it's far from the ideal space for such things.
