I think people would be better off just ignoring him if they don't like what he posts. Not posters no. But I do think that there does need to be a little bit more enforcement of the site standards. There have been several posts which are blatantly prohibited content, and they are allowed. There doesn't seem to be any sort of consistency as to what is allowed and what isn't.

I agree that there are posts that appear to break the rules and are left up. But we have to understand that someone needs to actually report the post to have it reviewed by a mod. Mods don't have the time to read every single post. There are some posters here who claim they've never reported a post. That's fine. There are also posts that appear to violate the site standards, but if folks just assume that it has been reported, well...it may be that it never happened. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Mods can't win, no matter what they do.

I agree with this 100%. Which is why I'm not bashing the mods. It's a job I'd not want. I just know that we used to have more of them, and it seems like it's mostly Mod5 doing all the work around here. That's why I was requesting more mods. Despite what Quasimodo seems to think, I don't want anyone banned just because I disagree with them. But I do want posts which violate site standards to be deleted, or at least have a warning issued. I admit I didn't report for the first couple of years because I didn't want to be annoying to the mods, but I do report posts now.

The one and only post I ever reported occurred over 5 years ago and it was from a bona fide troll who was eventually banned.

I agree. It looks like a really thankless position, much like with good cops nowadays in large cities, retiring early in record numbers.

I was approached to become a mod in a couple of other forums I belonged to. One site creator tried to entice me with the great software I'd have access to. I said, "No thanks, I'm just here to have fun and engage in interesting discussion."

No, one who is consistent. For example, recently I had one of my posts deleted by a mod because I wrote a bunch of parody porn titles and the mod didn't like that there was too much profanity. However, db20db on a regular basis, harasses people and tells them to "fuck off", and none of his posts get deleted. When you look at his posting history, he does this often and somehow gets away with it. At one point I counted 10 different users that he attacked unprovoked. The standards on this site are all over the place.

Again, swearing is not an issue. I view db20db's posts in their context, which is always part of a back-and-forth with other, equally acid-tongued members. We generally do not get involved in these situations.

We very rarely take action with respect to claims of harassment. But in two recent cases, the harassment has been obvious, repeated, and unprovoked (beyond general claims that the members are "trolls"), and it got to the point where one of them was literally begging for it to stop. It will not be allowed to continue.

If people chose to quit this site because they either can't bring themselves to ignore two people they don't like or can't restrain themselves from harassing those people, that is regrettable, but it is their choice.

With respect to what happened in "the first few years"– I've been a moderator since July 2017 and that has been my experience. Looking at our moderator spreadsheet, where all enforcement actions are logged, I see only one warning from another mod on his record from 5 years ago:

Regardless, I'm not going to dig up five year-old posts to re-litigate whatever disputes may have occurred at that time.

I generally agree with this observation. I am a part-time poster, long-time reader and see this becoming more common. If you lack a 5- or 6- figure post count and express an unfashionable observation, it often seems met with coordinated criticism, insults, and ostracism from certain high-volume posters. Time after time I've reported posts that just use the most disgusting and ugly profanity, one ... two .... three times until one of MC's supposed moderators tells me to stop reporting it.
