the best "WTF IS GOING ON??" movies...

What are the best "WTF IS GOING ON??" movies...not ones that are straight up garbage and go nowhere, but ones that actually make sense in the end.

DARK CITY
THE SIGNAL (ok this one is kind of weak, but it was still entertaining)
TENET
THE FOUNTAIN
VANILLA SKY

I don't even remember if it was completely resolved, but check out

"Last Year In Marienbad"

reply

Good choice.

reply

I saw it once, gave it a 6/10 for originality.. Have you seen it more than once? If so, was there a big difference?

reply

I've seen it twice. It's great if you want to go on a mindless trip.

reply

But was it much better (and understandable) the second time?

reply

Probably the same.

reply

Oh, Tenet is a very good pick!

Mulholland Drive
Into the void
Gozu
Jacob’s ladder

reply

Does mullHolland ever explain itself other than the death though. Seemed too obscure to me

reply

(Spoilers) The first 2/3 of the film is Naomi Watts’ dream. The last third shows what happened before and after, culminating in her suicide.

The dream begins as a wish fulfilment fantasy and then crumbles as reality asserts itself.

reply

I was thinking the very ending torched everything previous when tiny people crawled out of a paper bag, or something. :) I seriously don't remember it, it's been so long ago

reply

It’s Lynch so even when he’s showing reality it will be distorted by the emotional state of the character. Diane was going insane with guilt when she saw the mini old couple, I think they were her parents or grand-parents and the thought of them, combined with the unbearable shame of her becoming a murderer, made them into scary demonic ghouls in her mind.

the card counter

It's not for everyone, but I liked Upstream Color (2013).

The Invitation (2015)
Memento (2000)
A Tale of Two Sisters (2003)
Eraserhead (1977)

After Primer, I was very interested in UPSTREAM COLOR. Even read about it to comprehend.

Did it make perfect sense to you on first viewing?
Did you know that controlling spore is a real thing today?
As good as it was, as is, I prefer if movies give you enough to figure them out, and I felt it did not do that. But, I could be wrong.

reply

I didn't read up on it, but it took two times to understand what exactly was happening. I still don't think I 100% understand Primer though.

reply

I'm curious if you ACTUALLY understood Upstream Color? the stuff I read about, almost none of it was explained in the movie well at all. it made sense in that it did connected things, but none of what it represented came through, I felt, inside the movie itself. Reading it all externally, made perfect sense, but it didn't give you enough in movie to allow those conclusions to form. But, that is just me.

reply

It's been years since I last watched it, but I thought I did understand it. I didn't read up on it, so maybe I should and maybe it did just go over my head.

reply

I'm surprised no ones mentioned DONNIE DARKO yet.

reply

Great pick!

reply

I REALLY TRIED to get into that one. As well done as it is, after several views, then listening to the directors commentary, he didn't seem to put half of what he talked about into the movie. It should have explained everything he mentioned in the comentary (so you dont have to listen to the commentary) but didn't, so I gave up on it and gave my disc away so I would never be tempted again to watch that dissapointing (to me) movie again.

but, i thought it explained itself pretty well. minus all the additional crap the director DIDN'T do but thinks he did.

Lifeforce
Spookies

"VANILLA SKY"

Lol no, you mean Abre Los Ojos.

reply

i much preferred the VS remake over the original, but I'm american and saw it first, so that kinda fixed it in me

reply

The US version was so incredibly schmaltzy.

reply

I didn't view it that way, but I understand why you say that. I think they Americanized it, which usually results in some dumbing down.

Same. Although ALO is good too.
