Arizona flash floods are serious!

It went from sun to very dark in 15 minutes. Trees starting going sideways with rain. 15 minutes later I'm watching an inch or more of water creep towards my back door. It's stopping now the water receding back. Thank god, thought I might have some water in the house soon.

Flash flood. https://youtu.be/-ESJwucUUys

Wow!
I happen to love a good rain but that was super crazy!

The rain is generally polite and gentle out East here, it’s tranquil and soothing.

You might want to buy a Pony Pump and a hose if you have a basement, that was a tremendous amount of water.

That much water will swamp your foundations.

reply

Oh yeah, floods are no fun at all. Did anyone in your area flood with that rain event?

reply

I have two automatic sump pumps and boy, they have saved my ass!

I’d guess they are about six horsepower each, they are heavy cast Iron old war horses and they are solidly plumbed in so it’s not too easy to move them around to look for labels but these sump pumps saved my ass a few years ago when the PVC well line split open down in the back of the cellar near the furnace. My plumber nearly ran out of here and the pet rabbits nearly drowned! Those 1980s cast Iron sump pumps shot hundreds of gallons of water right out into the back woodlot, it took hardly 5 minutes.

If you have an underground TV Den room or a cement cellar I highly recommend a couple sump pumps, it could save your house!

reply

Wow Shogun, you are prepared for sure. There aren’t any basements here where I live but that does sound like a good plan if we did. Very cool that they are automatic.

It was a crazy day, My Lady called me In the morning (we were both at work down by The City) and she said ‘I’m sending the plumber by…’

After work I let the guy in and said ‘I got a leak in the well pipe, check it out…’

He came running up a minute later and shouted ‘Buddy, that’s no leak, you got a flood’’

We kicked on the sump pumps and emptied that whole back cellar in a few minutes…it was hundreds of gallons!

You all need a sump pump or two if you have a cellar, no joke.

reply

Yep, flooding is no fun at all! We had a massive flood in 2016. Like over 30” of rainfall in a couple of days. Crazy stuff.

reply

Oh brother, that was lucky day for me! I feel lucky for surviving it! Half my basement is finished…carpet, drywall, wall paper, multiple electronics, a built in Humidex brand Dehumidifier…that thing is like a grand to replace, easily!

The water was rising in the back
cement block section of my cellar. The water line was nearly up to the carpets and nice woodwork on the finished side of my basement. My pet rabbits were nearly drowned.

Then the plumber who was in a pretty legit state of panic at this point and I flicked on the two old cast iron sump pumps.

You never saw hundreds of gallons of water disappear more quickly!

The plumber charged me $400 bucks to fix three feet of PVC hose lol…

I had to claw this guy off the ceiling but he was not shy about leaving a bill!

These Contractors are just the worst.

reply

You arrived on the scene just in time! So how common is it for a home’s basement to flood from a broken pipe?

reply

I think you just need to keep an eye on all of the basement piping. I was not expecting any big deal…It really turned out to be a big surprise, a bit of a flood, my plumber flipped out, I should have drowned this guy. He had no idea what to do,
He lost his shit and I still had to pay the prick $400!! Goddam plumbers!

reply

“Goddam plumbers!”

It’s one of those professions that can get away with insanely high bills for some reason.

reply

Yeah, plumbers and electricians really screw you. But to be fair, a lot of us would flood or burn down the house if we tried to do some of this stuff ourselves lol🤓

reply

I agree! I’ve messed up several projects in the past that I had to call in a pro to fix. 😀

reply

Real talk!

You should have seen the wooden stairs I built in my garage a few years ago, talk about a death trap LOL!

Too many tools, very little time and zero skills are a recipe for disaster🙃

reply

Kind of like me, I know just enough to be dangerous. 😆

reply

You sound like me, you look at that tool bench and say ‘hell yeah!!!’

Then you hire a guy that knows what the hell he’s doing to fix your messes lol😄

I totally get it Bro.

Luckily The Wives find our silliness mildly amusing!

I just stood at the back door staring at the water getting higher and higher. I really thought it was coming in. I actually stepped into the backyard to clear one of the drain holes at the wall, and the water was at my ankle.

I lived in Phoenix at the time of the Salt River flooding in 1980. The water ran so high they had to close all but three of the bridges and crossings were closed. It took some folks nearly 8 hours to get home from work. We used to drive on the dry river bed itself much of the time, but not that year. I was glad I wasn't working then - I'd just had my first baby.

If you haven't seen an arizona flood you don't understand. I've been here for 15 years, and this one still scared me. 2 inches of water in the backyard. There's nothing you can do, the amount of water that comes down is unreal.

reply

I agree. We dealt with significant street flooding in our neighborhood after a few storms. Thankfully, the water stayed in the street.

reply

I'm afraid that's one of several prices you pay to live in the desert. I'm sorry you had to deal with that, and it's nice that your home didn't get flooded.

reply

“it's nice that your home didn't get flooded.”

You can say that again. The aftermath can be horrendous, especially dealing with insurance and FEMA.

reply

Oh jeez. Insurance companies can be awful.

I once bought two cute little houses in the City Of Yonkers, side by side. I kept my Mom in the small one and my own family in the other, slightly larger one.

Life was good, then hurricane Sandy came knocking at my
doors and that bitch was insistent on getting in.

Nearly Ten years later and I can still hear the roof and siding ripping off those nice little houses and flying away in the wind.

The insurance company took MONTHS to cough up for repairs.
I pay these guys loyally every single month and they drag their feet to write a check.

It took nearly 6 months and two checks from Liberty Mutual to repair my sweet little houses.

But hell, you are a Louisiana Man, you don’t need to hear scary weather stories from a dumb Yankee New Yorker…You guys see and survive it all!

Us Yankee Boys respect you Southern folks.

reply

It’s all regional. I bet you have snow stories that I wouldn’t want to have any part of. Lol

reply

Oh boy, the winter driving can get a bit crazy up North here…Keep the machine going at about 15-20 MPH, it may take a few hours to get home to your woman but you’ll make it Buddy. And do NOT STOP! Just roll slowly through the stop lights and keep it steady on the curves, you can easily wreck your car and hurt yourself in this ice and snow!

I’ve had some bad icy snow runs, my worst was a few winters ago, My little Ford Escape got me home in one piece, I left a hell of a lot of speed-demons in ditches in my wake.

I drive a similar sized and weighted Chevy Equinox now. She shares a similar weight and tire stance to the Ford Escape, but I do find the Fords to be more nimble, their cranky electronic problems notwithstanding.

This Chevy is sloppy and she needs new shoes soon.
50k and this Chevy needs new rubber!
Unbelievable.

Does Arizona have a way to channel this flash flood water into reservoirs? Above-ground or underground?

Arizona needs water!

reply

Same here in New South Wales, Australia. In my area we’ve had more rainfall in the past 24 hours than the normal average for the month of July. We’ve had so many flood events this year, it’s insane.

reply

Hope you’re ok. It happened once in ‘Sunny’ Bournemouth. I was at the air show, trapped in a marquee with a mounts of alcohol, lol.
