What did you locos watch this week? (06/12-06/18)CLOSED

My crazy ass week:

Halloween II (2009 DVD): No one seems to like this movie. Well don’t worry Robie boy, you got a fan in me and I’m glad I bought it. I liked it on the same level as the first one. The atmosphere, the settings, the cinematography, the gore and of course, the Halloween vibes. It was such a trip, real fun to watch. This is my fifth Rob Zombie flick and I enjoyed each one of them but they all share the same weakness and she goes by the name of Sheri Moon Zombie. She did not have a big role in this one so it’s not so bad but I think we can all agree that love is blind and she can’t act well. My rating: 7/10

The takedown (2022 Netflix): Omar Cy is a great actor who did very good movies and Louis Leterrier is a solid director but this will be listed amongst the weakest films in both their career. It has chemistry and fun action but the story is predictable and uninspired, most jokes fell flat and the nudity felt forced. My rating: 5/10

R.I.P.D. (2013 Netflix): Strange, quirky, funny, unique yet giving me mad MIB vibes, this was a solid popcorn flick my friends. Especially considering the amazingly eclectic cast. I read all the hate this movie got, it’s pretty intense but my main complaint is the struggle I had adapting with Bridges’s character while I normally highly appreciate his roles. He eventually grew on me though. My rating: 6.5/10

Fatherhood (2021 Netflix): First of all, Lil Rel Howery was Hilarious as Jordan. He cracked me up many times. The entire film was very well scripted and my wife and I are fans of Kevin Heart and he was solid in the leading role. My rating: 7/10

Hello!

Halloween II 4/10
R.I.P.D 6.5/10

My week:

Total Recall (1990) 9/10
I didn't plan on having a Schwarzenegger weekend, and yet here I am. I love this movie. The cast is fantastic. I love the story. I think what makes it so great is that you can take it anyway you want. I remember reading an interview with Verhoven after the film debuted at TIFF and the movie was described like Schrödinger's cat. He filmed it specifically with ambiguity. If you think it's all in his head. You are correct. If you think it really happened. You are correct. It's just so much fun to watch.

Predator (1987) 8/10
I admit that I liked this one better back in the 80s, but it's still a fun, fun movie to watch. Some of the effects don't hold up as well as they used to, but the action is a blast to watch.

The Craft: Legacy (2020) 6/10
I have so many questions about this movie. Like why would a psychologist/therapist move her daughter into a house when she hasn't even met the whole family yet? And who gets a period so heavy that it drips on the floor and doesn't notice? (I'm not shaming anyone who that's happened to, but I would think that her clothing would have absorbed it all and that she would have felt at least felt something before it got to that point) I didn't actually hate this movie. There were some fun moments. There were times though, especially the end battle that felt more like an old episode of Charmed than The Craft.

Haunting of Cellblock 11 (2014) 6/10
Not a bad ghost hunter found footage film. Some of the effects were pretty cheap looking, but I thought most of the acting was pretty good for the budget. The scares were pretty minimal, and the story offered nothing new to the genre, but it stuck to the formula and I think it was somewhat successful there. At least they had a creepy location to shoot at.

The Spell (1977) 6/10
There were a lot of decent 70s and 80s made for tv movies. I think this one is one of those. Had a very respectable cast, and Lee Grant was stunning. The story is a little reminiscent of Carrie. Although no one is really despicable, no one is really likeable. I'm not going to say that this is great by any means, but it did keep me interested the whole way through.

Eaten Alive (1976) 6/10
I've seen this a couple of times now, and I still don't really know what I think of it. I mean it is a pretty silly movie, and at times the lighting, though a definite choice, is distracting. Robert Englund is a highlight for me. The film has it's moments of 70s sleaze greatness, but even though I am a fan of many films in the rape revenge genre, there is just something here that keeps me from really liking it.

Against the Night (2017) 6/10
This was decent. I think it benefitted from not going found footage. The few scenes that were worked. I did think that parts of it were a little too dark. The plot was creative, and strayed away from the usual storyline, even if it did use a lot of the common tropes. The execution and effects weren't too bad, and there were some nude scenes. I did lose interest a little bit, and I wasn't totally thrilled with the ending, but overall this was okay.

Hidden Gems (2022) 6.5/10
I almost turned this off in the first 5 minutes. I thought it was going to be horrible. I am glad I made myself give it 20 minutes. I ended up really liking it. The scenery was great, both on land and underwater. I am really liking Hallmark leaving British Columbia for some of their movies, and also casting different people. I liked the leads, they felt comfortable together. Yes, there was some of the usual tropes, and I did take off half a star for the unneeded conflict with the beachcomber as I felt it cheapened the story.

Offseason (2021) 5.5/10
So I have to admit, the first 5 minutes really turned me off. I was ready to shut it off, but I do have to watch at least 15-20 minutes of a movie before I do that. I'm glad I did, because it did improve a little. Decent cast with some Ti West movie favourites, and some familiar faces from other Mickey Keating films. Richard Brake was wasted in this though. I liked the creepy atmosphere, but over all it just didn't all come together for me. I didn't hate it, and I might enjoy it more on a second watch, but as of right now, that won't be for awhile.

Pet (2016) 6/10
I knew I'd seen this before, but I didn't really remember anything other than some of the twistier parts and that I thought I liked it. So on the rewatch, I really liked the cast, and I thought the plot was interesting. It's a movie where no one really is sympathetic which makes it difficult to really care too much about what happens to anyone. I think that may be why I didn't fully remember this movie. There is some good tension here though, and the performances make it worth watching.

The Last Five Days: 10 Years Later (2021) 2/10
No idea why I watched this one. I really didn't care for the previous one, and in my review I said I wasn't going to watch this one, but boredom and not wanting to keep looking had me pressing play. The first one did make me laugh a few times. This one did not. It was so drawn out. Watching found footage that a drunk person filmed, wasn't fun. Sorry Clay Moffatt, that was painful and so unnecessary. The entire part after eating the fruit was really, really bad. The smashed camera effect made the bad acting even worse. I didn't enjoy this one at all.

Halloween II: 5/10

My last two weeks.

When Harry Met Sally (1989) - I wasn’t expecting to enjoy this a ton, but it exceeded my expectations. It was entertaining and pretty funny. I have to say their relationship would never have worked. Sally tells Harry she hates him, then three months later they’re married? That’s not happening. (79/100)

Irma Vep (1996) - I honestly just wasn’t feeling this one. I didn’t get it. (67/100)

Maps to the Stars (2014) - This was a weird and uncomfortable movie. Not an easy one to watch. Some parts were good and other parts were not. Some of the characters were absolutely awful. Seeing Havana get beaten to death with the trophy was so satisfying. I wish the same thing would have happened to Stafford, but he still got it bad. (70/100)

Crimes of the Future (1970) - This was a tough one. In concept it should have been good, but it wasn’t. It just didn’t come together as a movie. It dragged so much and felt like so much longer than 63 minutes. (63/100)

Crimes of the Future (2022) - This was my third David Cronenberg movie in a span of two days, and my 19th total, the fourth most of any director. I enjoyed it, but it felt like it was missing something. I thought there should have been more to the story. I couldn’t help being disappointed after what it was hyped up to be. (76/100)

Sons of Trinity (or Trinità & Bambino... e adesso tocca a noi!) (1996) - No one has ever seen this movie. Well, the video of the movie on YouTube has over a million views, but you wouldn't know it. If I see one movie in a franchise I have to see them all. It was fine. (66/100)

The Pink Panther Strikes Again (1976) - Charles Dreyfus, who has finally cracked over Inspector Jacques Clouseau's antics, escapes from a mental institution and launches an elaborate plan to get rid of Clouseau once and for all. (77/100)

reply

Operation Mincemeat (2021) - I will watch damn near anything with Kelly Macdonald, who was the reason I watched this. It was good, but it should have been more interesting. It was very unmemorable. (73/100)

Parallel Mothers (2021) - I thought there was a chance that this could be really good, but it was just good. It didn’t do as much as it could have. (74/100)

Revenge of the Pink Panther (1978) - To prove that he still is strong and powerful, Philippe Douvier decides to kill Clouseau. Once news of his "death" has been announced, Clouseau tries to take advantage of it and goes undercover with Cato to find out who tried to kill him. (78/100)

Hustle (2022) - It was good. It was slightly ordinary for this kind of movie, but it was done well. Juancho Hernangómez and Anthony Edwards were better actors than I would have expected. (76/100)

I Know That Voice (2013) - I’m generally not a fan of documentaries, which is why I don’t watch many. It was pretty good. At the beginning it seemed to go by really slowly for me, but later on I guess it was more interesting. (74/100)

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989) - It was good. It sort of started out better and then the rest of the movie didn’t go as well as it could have. (71/100)

The Magnificent Ambersons (1942) - I really had no idea if I was going to like this or not. I liked it quite a lot. I’m not entirely sure why, but I thought it was really good and interesting. It just had something about it. There are a lot of people that hate this movie. Well, let me tell you, those people are wrong. It had me wishing I could have seen the hour longer version that Orson Welles wanted, which I did not expect at all. (82/100)

Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves (1997) - I really don’t understand the hate for this one. Oftentimes when a movie is badly received I can at least understand why even if I personally like it. In this case I didn’t. I thought it was better than the original. (75/100)

[deleted]

The Last King of Scotland (2006) - Really good, much better than I had any expectation of it being. It was really interesting and did everything well. It did a good job of showing the brutality of certain situations. I really cared about the story. A good performance from James McAvoy as well as an Oscar-winning one from Forest Whitaker. (85/100)

Stardust Memories (1980) - There are a lot of people who hate this movie. Well, let me tell you, those people are wrong. It’s really good. There are a couple small sections that are a little bit boring, but other than that it’s really entertaining. It may be helped by the fact that I usually like movies about the film industry. The hallucination scene in the field with the people waiting for the UFOs was top notch. (84/100)

First Love (2022) - I thought this might be worse than it was. It had some redeeming qualities (primarily Sydney Park), but it couldn’t rise above being generic and cliché. The two of them getting married at the end was really dumb, and the story with the parents was tedious and unnecessary. (64/100)

Babel (2006) - Tragedy strikes a married couple on vacation in the Moroccan desert, touching off an interlocking story involving four different families. The third film of Alejandro González Iñárritu and Guillermo Arriaga’s “Death Trilogy” or “Trilogy of Death.” It was really good. It was interesting all the way through. It did a good job weaving the four stories together. Chieko was a good and underrated character and I have to say my favorite of the film. (82/100)

Yo yo!

Halloween II 7/10
Fatherhood 8/10

I watched:

Alligator 1980 6/10 Some good moments, but needed more of the gator.

The Allnighter 1987 6/10 This wasn't as interesting or as fun as it should have been. The actors mostly do a fine job and there are a couple good moments, but this feels like it could have been a lot better.

De Sade 1969 6/10 This was alright. Some fun moments, but I was kind of hoping it would have been more provocative and naughtier.

All About Evil 2010 8/10 This was fun.

Fritz the Cat 1972 7/10 Fritz is a cool character. I enjoyed this and didn't realise how sexy cartoon animals could be.

Lightyear 2022 8/10 This was entertaining and fun. I thought Chris Evans did a good job. Sox the cat was clearly the best character.

Candyman: Day of the Dead 1999 6/10 Definitely the weakest of the Candyman movies, but still watchable. Tony Todd is good. The other actors range from bad to mediocre. Although the story is only mildly interesting, there are a couple of good moments along the way.

Dawn, her Dad & the Tractor 2021 8/10 A well made Canadian drama with a lot of heart and good performances.

Cha Cha Real Smooth 2022 8/10 I thought this was moving and sweet and really well written. Good performances from the cast.

Rip in Time 2022 7/10 I enjoyed this. It was cute and charming.

Color My World with Love 2022 9/10 One of the better Hallmark films. Good performances and a lot of heart.

The Outcasts 2017 6/10 This was just alright.

The Rock 1996 8/10 I thought I had seen this before, but after watching it, I don't think I ever had. This was an entertaining and satisfying action film.

A Witches’ Ball 2017 7/10 This was cute.

reply

Only saw The Rock and agree with you. 8/10

Some of your others are on my list.

Greetings Stonekeeper.

Baseball season, so movie watching is limited for me.

Just one, first time seeing it.

Simon (1980)

Starring - Alan Arkin, also the "Inconceivable!" guy from Princess Bride (87).

A pretty obscure movie, not one post in 7 YEARS for a movie released in 1980 (kinda hard thing to find on this site for a major release). A very interesting and original premise. A governmental think tank, where 5 of the smartest men in the world secretly control all aspects of American society, convince a assistant professor (Arkin) that he is actually a alien. (Comedy)

Very Woody Allen like in it's approach. A funny, but not a laugh out loud funny type of movie. If you like Woody Allen movies I would recommend it, if not - don't bother. 7/10.

reply

So if I understand, this is some sort of Woody Alien movie!? Hihi

Had never heard of it but sounds interesting.

reply

It isn't, but many of Woody Allen's crew worked on it, and definitely has that type of feel.

I was trying to do a pun….A rather poor one Lol!

Cruising (1980) 8/10 This was pretty disturbing to watch, but very well done. The director said you could see the real fear in Pacino's eyes. Pacino looks pretty messed up about what he see's the entire film. Disappointed it wasn't really a murder mystery though.
A police detective goes undercover in the underground S&M gay subculture of New York City to catch a serial killer who is preying on gay men.

Caveat (2020) 7/10 Very atmospheric, well acted.
A drifter suffering from partial memory loss accepts a job to look after a psychologically troubled woman in an abandoned house on an isolated island.

Vicious Fun (2020) 7/10 I don't usually like comedy/horror, but this was good.
Joel, a caustic 1980s film critic for a national horror magazine, finds himself unwittingly trapped in a self-help group for serial killers. With no other choice, Joel attempts to blend in or risk becoming the next victim.

The Columnist (2019) 8/10 It switched genres kind of in the middle. Went from silly fun, to serious drama.
A columnist must continuously deal with threats and negative comments on her social-media pages. One day, she has had enough and decides to hunt down her trolls.

Oculus (2013) 7/10 I seemed to have missed this one when it came out.
A woman tries to exonerate her brother, who was convicted of murder, by proving that the crime was committed by a supernatural phenomenon.

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (2016) 6.5/10 The laughs were pretty on point here. It helps that Samberg knows the rap/music world pretty well.
When it becomes clear that his solo album is a failure, a former boy band member does everything in his power to maintain his celebrity status.

reply

Cruising: Had never even heard of it but did some reading and might be even more disturbing than you think: « In 1972 director William Friedkin-huge after The French Connection (1971)--was shooting his spiritual/psych-horror The Exorcist (1973) in downtown New York. For a scene requiring mock brain-scans of the possessed lead character, he shot a real-life radiologist and his assistant, Paul Bateson. In 1979 Friedkin was planning an adaptation of Gerald Walker's novel "Cruising", inspired by a real-life serial killer who was carving up "leather boys" in the city's underground gay bars and dumping their body parts in the Hudson River, wrapped in black plastic bags. When Friedkin learned that his "Exorcist" radiologist assistant Bateson was awaiting trial for the post-coital slaying of gay film critic Addison Verrill, Friedkin decided to pay him a visit to do a little research into the psyche of his cruising killer. Bateson was later sentenced to life in prison for the Verrill murder, but not before dropping hints while in custody that he was also the body bag killer. Those cases remain unsolved, but there's a good chance that Friedkin had not only inadvertently consulted the actual killer responsible for the murders that were the subject of both the novel and the film it was based on, but that Friedkin had also cast him in a film he made years before. »

Oculus: I’m a fan. 8/10

Morbius (2022) - I thought did started fine but fell apart. I didn't really get the ending. Seems they were setting it up for a sequel but forgot to finish the movie I was watching. 5.5/10

One TV series:

Delhi Crime (2019) - Based on a true story about a Indian girl raped and killed in 2012. The case made international news. The series covers the hunt for the six killers. A very good look at the Indian legal system. This pulls no punches and it shows modern day India, warts and all. 8/10

reply

I’d watch Morbius, if only for the cast.

Delhi crime looks interesting.

reply

Okay, I decided to start watching 90s thrillers this summer that I haven't seen in years or maybe never at all. First up:

Movies

-Pacific Heights (1990)
I mean, the movie does have suspense, but ultimately it's just a story about a tenant who refuses to pay rent and drills holes in the wall at night.

TV Series.

-The Cosby Mysteries - Episodes 14+15

-Monk - marathon

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

reply

I love me some
Michael Keaton but haven’t since this one. Do you recommend it? A bit hard to say from your review. :)

reply

It is suspenseful and Keaton plays a creepy guy very well, so if you've got nothing else to watch, you could just as well put this on. It's not a badly made movie or anything.

reply

Gotcha. Probably good for a boring/rainy Saturday afternoon sort of
