Pretty great year overall but those ones are stinkers imo.

I’m in the small minority of people who loved AvP. I was totally ready to hate it, being an Alien purist and all, but I thought it was a fun and well-made monster mash. Of course it doesn’t come close to the artistry of the original Alien, but if you watch it with no expectations I think it’s a hugely entertaining popcorn flick.

reply

James Cameron said it was the 3rd best Alien film in the franchise after the first 2 Alien movies.

reply

Love how Cameron rates himself so highly, never one to let modesty get in the way 😂

I wouldn’t say I’d agree with him. I thought Alien3 was underrated and Resurrection, although it certainly had its problems, was one of the most visually striking of all the Alien movies.

It’s cool that Cameron isn’t a snob about it though and can see the value in AvP. To me its brilliance is that it’s a stupid concept and doesn’t try to hide it. It revels in its own stupidity and just goes balls-to-the-wall without pretending to be anything more cerebral. If I had a choice between watching Prometheus and AvP the latter would win every time.

reply

Cameron may be cocky, but no one would disagree the first two are the best in the series.

reply

Sure, but few would agree that AvP sits at number 3!

reply

AvP indeed has its issues. There are a ton of great ideas wedged in there, however, and it definitely delivers some popcorn classic fun.

If only the film series could incorporate something like the Dr. Church character from the comics...

reply

HIDALGO ROCKS...THE ALAMO IS OKAY...I COULD LIVE WITHOUT THE OTHERS....NO...I'M LYING...I LOVE VAN HELSING TOO...IT IS JUST SO FUCKING BAD ON SUCH A MAJOR SCALE THAT IT IS COMPLETELY AWESOME.

reply

I thought "White Chicks" was funny. You really do have to give credit to the Wayans brothers there for wearing whiteface and doing an excellent parody of giddy blonde girls. It was a rather novel concept.

reply

😐

reply

I guess you never went to high school with annoying preppy blonde girls. 🤣

reply

I didn't like The Day After Tomorrow back then. But after seeing 2012 and Moonfall I think it wasn't that bad afterall.

reply

From your list, I still like 'The Village' and 'White Chicks', and as for the rest were pretty forgettable. I don't think I've ever watched AVP -- the premise seemed a bit too silly for me.

reply

Time hasn’t been kind to White Chicks. It’s a very racist movie.

reply

I don't think I'd give my time to rewatching any of these that I've seen except AVP which is flawed but still semi-watchable.

reply

I saw the "twist" in The Village a mile off.

Wondered how the could make a film about Alex the Great boring but they managed to do just that.

Van Helsing was ok.

Never seen White Chicks and never will or AVP.
