Carl Palmer
Keith Moon
Jon Bonham
Buddy Rich
Stewart Copeland

I thought only dinosaurs like me were aware of Buddy Rich. Great list, btw.

Drums was the first instrument that I took up, so it holds a special place in my heart. I thought I’d limit it to a top 5, otherwise it would have ended up just a massive list of drummers.

I was tempted to include Jeff Pocaro, merely for the ‘Pocaro shuffle’ on Rosanna (good luck trying to play that, lol).

I enthusiastically latched onto the notion that 'drums' were and are, man's first musical instrument when I first encountered that claim. We can't help but respond to rhythm.

During my teenage rocker years, this was considered to be the benchmark of a good drummer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSttPLaTx_M

Carl Motherfucking Palmer! Hell yes!

reply

A technically crisp and concise drummer.

reply

Also a really cool guy, in general. I've had a few opportunities to talk to him and he's very approachable and genuine.

Max Weinberg of the E Street Band

Stewart Copeland
Neil Peart

Steve Gadd

Sal Mineo actually became an accomplished drummer, preparing for his role in The Gene Krupa Story https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UKQ6hEaU9HI

Long time since I saw that film but I remember enjoying it a lot and I always find Sal Mineo very watchable.

No list is valid without Bonham, Moon, and Peart. I also agree about Carl Palmer.

As a Deadhead I give kudos to the duo of Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart.
Another great duo is Butch Trucks and Jai Johanny Johanson of The Allman Brothers Band.

Elvis's drummer Ronnie Tutt - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NemuuJZ0wM

I always liked those double bass drum sets.

Here's another really talented drummer collaborating with Elvis.

Here's one I consider great, both drummer and lead singer.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EKjZ1_egHSE

I always thought it must be hard to drum and sing at the same time. Levon Helm of The Band comes to mind.

reply

Exactly! That's why he stands out for me.

This guy has always been such a cool inspiration for me:

The ‘one arm’ guy for some metal band...

reply

That would be Rick Allen from Def Leppard.

reply

Yeah, that guy...thanks, been racking my brain all day trying to remember that...I refused to use Google! You the man!

reply

Thanks for pointing me in this direction! I did some searching and was blown away by the story. I can't even fathom being a one-armed drummer, yet he pulled it off. It reminds me of those amazing mouth and foot painting artists.

reply

He pulled off his own arm !?! Like Van Gogh ?
