What is "penis envy" even in the first place?

What does it mean, why does it exist, and who and why do some or even many have it?

P.S. In general sense, male or otherwise, we don't just look at our sexual organs as something that we use to pee, right, including outside the themes of sex and sexuality?

Penis envy (German: Penisneid) is a stage theorized by Sigmund Freud regarding female psychosexual development, in which young girls experience anxiety upon realization that they do not have a penis. Freud considered this realization a defining moment in a series of transitions toward a mature female sexuality.

I have no idea if that's a generally accepted concept these days - always sounded a bit silly to me.

reply

Did girls REALLY feel such an anxiety like that and was it really documented? And proven?

reply

Unfortunately I don't have a nineteenth century woman to ask and would be too timid to query thier contemporaries. And, how do you prove something like that anyway?

reply

No...I always thought it was a cultural metaphor for the world considered more in its favor. Or the envy of such a more convenient body ( muscle and strength) ...with the exception of the penis and balls.

Of course the ability to pee any old where at any time and remain fully dressed cannot be denied.

reply

What?!
I thought penis envy was something that happened between males - who had penises.
Or I guess, women who want a penis because they are trans?

As a woman, there’s never been a point where I’ve seen a penis (the first time knowing about them or otherwise lol) and then wanted one hahaha?!!! 😅 That’s crazy!

reply

I believe it was originally a Freudian concept and I assume was part of the framework he and his followers used to treat women in their care. I have no idea if it still is but it doesn't sound like an idea that would have stood the test of time.

reply

Wait! What? You can use them to pee with too?

reply

ASK SHOGUN.🙂

Hey buddy, I heard your pecker looks like a roadie for ZZ Top🖕

There was a study done in the 60s, and please forgive me if I'm getting this wrong it's been almost 30 years since I learned about it, but it was in a university and they gave everyone in the class a pencil to write an exam with. The students were instructed to return the pencils at the end. They kept track of who returned the pencils and who didn't. Well....apparently women have penis envy because they kept the pencils more than then men did.

Now I, and many others, think that perhaps women like stationary more than men. I mean, for me, the staples catalogue is way more exciting than playgirl! And I know I'm not alone with that.

reply

you are making this up?

reply

Not at all.

reply

would the result have been the same if they used pens?

reply

No idea. I know it was debunked.

Can't access the full paper about the study, but just do you know I'm not making it up.

reply

if the women were mothers and can see why they would keep the pencils.

reply

Again that seems crazy! 😂
Because I keep a pencil I want a penis?!
Damn, my above statement that I DON’T want a penis must be void then, because I took a pencil from a builder’s merchant (they are for use by customers) 🤣
That’s a new one on me then 😬🍆🚨

As you say, I’d much rather look through a stationary catalogue than a porn magazine lol…. much more practical!!

its an idea that sprang out of Sigmund Freud's head. victorian social science often lacked much of scientific rigor. the discipline was still very much a work in progress.

it would be interesting to have an insight as to why people like freud & jung had such outsize influence, given that it was largely unmerited as much more than speculative insights of very intelligent people with no experimental model or controls.

reply

Its simple, females want what they aint got. Next question

I once saw an interview with a man who had just returned from summiting Everest. When asked what the worst part of the experience was, without hesitation he said, "Peeing through twelve inches of insulated clothing with a six inch gun."

> What is "penis envy"

I imagine some female mountain climbers understand the concept.
