One of the greatest years in movie history. So many favourites, including what for me may be the two greatest films of the '70s, but as usual I'll restrict it to ten...

1. Murmur of the Heart
2. The Last Picture Show
3. Walkabout
4. Death in Venice
5. Wake in Fright
6. The Devils
7. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
8. The Emigrants
9. The Decameron
10. The Boy Friend

hm: lots of others

reply

Very creative years in Hollywood, in line with the music of the time.

reply

So true... artists aimed so high back in those days.

reply

I'm also going to add two more films to my list which were actually made-for-TV movies ...
Brian's Song
Duel*

Speilberg only 24 years old when he directed Duel, a most memorable film.

reply

Yes Two Lane Blacktop! Need to rewatch that one, been too long.

reply

I hated Diamonds Are Forever, but that is really a snapshot of the era so it belongs in the top 10... but so is Billy Jack...

IMO Get Carter is better than half of the top 10.

Wow. IMO this is the toughest year you've posted, to argue with the top 10.

reply

Just DVD'd Get Carter tonight..it was on TCM.

The loveable Michael Caine shows off his bad-ass side.

reply

Billy Jack was the top box office film? That's so strange.

My favorites:

The Andromeda Strain - easily my favorite film
Klute
The Omega Man
Support Your Local Gunfighter
Dirty Harry

I haven't seen The French Connection yet and several others.

I didn't like A Clockwork Orange outside of the opening shot. Near total misfire for me. The novel is much better.

reply

Good list.

I'll put Support Your local Gunfighter on my to watch list.

The French Connection made Hackman's career. I highly recommend it.

reply

La classe operaia va in paradiso

reply

Thanks for adding lots of interesting international movies I need to see. (my weak spot in my movie knowledge is that it's too American centric)

reply

You're very welcome... I'd be more than happy to give you more recommendations. Especially if you tell me what kind of things you look for, and if you name your favorite movies, I could probably narrow it down - I've seen about a thousand foreign movies. It's quite a learning experience on many different levels --- film, but also history, and film history.

reply

I appreciate your additions...but don't just think about me. I plan on doing all 50 years for a ledger on this site. Reply lists that are added will fill my watch list for years.

Thanks again for your addition.

reply

Billy Jack was huge for years.

People may not get it anymore or it's probably aged badly. IDK

Cool list though.

Second to Easy Rider, it's one of the movies that I believe best represents the hippie 1970's mindset. Easy to see how newer generations would think it's strange. I'm Gen X and I think it's a bit strange.

Born Losers was the first movie done in 1967. I've never seen it and have ordered a DVD copy.
