UB40 - cultural appropriation?

A bunch of white guys who got rich making reggae pop?

Or is music styles open license?

reply

I love UB-40. Excellent lubricant.

reply

I use it on my yard tractor and all of my gardening equipment, nothing beats it

reply

While we're at it I'm fairly convinced that the Fine Young Cannibals were neither young nor cannibals (they may have been 'fine' but I'll leave that up to the Ladies and a couple of the guys here to judge)

reply

They drive me crazy.

reply

'OOH-OOH'

reply

Good God man you’re right! How very dare they!!!

I have it on good authority that A Flock of Seagulls were not in fact seabirds of the family Laridae in the suborder Lari, most closely related to the terns or distantly related to auks, skimmers and even more distantly to waders.

The fucking liberty!

reply

I know right?!

While we're on the subject The Eagles were in fact just a bunch of dudes, not majestic birds at all!

I was very disappointed when I found out about this

reply

True that. Although I would argue that Don Henley was quite a good looking rooster in his younger years.

But that’s a debate for another Intothenight thread, if you know what I mean, wink wink nudge nudge say no more…

What a bunch of liars!

reply

I think seagulls should give their name to pelicans who live by the sea and have the defining feature of a large gull. Don't you agree?

Seagulls should be renamed chip thieves.

reply

elvis would never have happened.

reply

Give it a break dude

reply

Great band

reply

Yes, because they added absolutely nothing to reggae; all they did was basically spit out karaoke cover versions of preexisting songs for a white bread audience.

Just to show you what I'm talking about--

Bob Marley version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0Yx4tRM61Q
UB40: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXt56MB-3vc

The UB40 song is not a "cover." It's the exact same song, just sung by different people.

Now, Snow ("Informer") on the other hand, he was the real deal, not some poser cashing in on a trend. Jim Carrey made fun of him on In Living Color as another Vanilla Ice but you can hear that he had a legitimate affection for reggae and R and B.
