What did you watch this week sunshine? (06/06-06/12)

It's summer time!!!! Let's have cold cocktails and unwine!!!! At nght when it's dark, for us it's: Movie Time!!!

Sing along with me then tell me what you watched.

Me:

Stop or my mom will shoot (1992 TV): I liked this movie back then and on rewatch I like it still. Very silly, cute and fun. The haters are all stone cold hearted. I give it the award for Worst Wardrob and it just makes it all better. Oh and what can I say about that smile in the last frame? Priceless. I don’t know if it’s true that Arnie tricked Sly in taking that role but if he did, good on him! My rating: 7/10

Open 24 hours (2018 DVD): A blind buy that payed off. Starts of pretty slowly but it do get pretty intense even if the story barely makes sense and you might see a twist or 2 coming in advance. There is No abuse of jump scares and there is a few precious moments of dialogue. The ambiance, settings and cinematography were warm, cool and nice to look at. The cast was just good enough to make the shaky story work. My rating: 6.5/10

Come to daddy (2020 DVD): I feel like the first hour dragged 30 minutes of solid material and it affected the final product but the last 30 minutes contained enough wicked gems to make it still very worth it. Best line: “The semen was yellow OK! I’m not defending my choice with you, let’s fucking go!” For those who have seen it; (Spoilers) this movie would’ve made so much more sense and been better if instead of hearing the phone calls at night (that gave away half of the twist) we would’ve heard only the metal clanking at night. Anyways, my rating: 7/10

The island (2005 DVD): My wife said we already watched this a few years ago. I said: you did, I fell asleep 20 minutes in and barely remember what I saw.” So it was my “first time” seeing it. The concept is good. The special effects, settings and cinematography are all tippity-top. The direction is sufficiently Bayesque. The first chase scene was exhilarating but in the final act it became redundant and over the top. The acting is very average (Except for Steve Buscemi who doesn’t know how to give a bad performance). I much preferred the first hour because once they’re out in the city, it tries too much to be an all-out action movie filled with explosions when it worked better as a mysterious sci-fi. I think it’s a bit better than THX-1138, way inferior to Blade Runner and about as good as Logan’s run. My rating: 6.8/10

Happy summer! Pour me another cocktail and let's go skinny dipping at the beach.

Stop or my mom will shoot It's been a long while since I seen it, but I would guess around a 6/10
Haven't seen Open 24 hours, but it sounds interesting

Looking forward to seeing In the Heights. I also re-watched Candleshoe in this past year and still really liked it. I always wanted to live there when I was a kid and I do enjoy David Niven.

reply

I saw fast and furious back then. Not too bad but not my type of movie either. 6/10 sounds about right

Im jealous of all of you who say Kid Detective.

reply

The Island was a mess but entertaining 6.5/10

reply

Good description.

It's one of those movies that could have used a nip and tuck for a big improvement.

reply

This seems to be the general agreement

Murder, My Sweet (1944) - A very complicated plot. Almost as confusing as The Big Sleep. Some of the motivations don't make sense to me. 5.5/10

The Elephant Man (1980) - Love this movie. Hopkins gets overlooked for acting in this as he is so normal. 8/10

Long Ago, Tomorrow (1971) - The main character in this movie was not very angry about all the crap that happened to him. The death at the end just happened so fast. Not a big budget movie. 6/10

Ace in the Hole (1951) - This movie keeps getting better with age. It might be Kirk's best performance. Someone on the boards said it was satirical. I didn't see that at all. A very dark drama. 8.5/10

reply

I saw the elephant man in high school and it was pretty good but I have a vague memory of it. 8/10 sounds about right

reply

I started and stopped a lot of bad movies this week. The only one I finished and enjoyed was the remake of Annie 2014, cute family stuff. 6/10

reply

I own it and watched it with the family. Cute indeed. 6.5/10

reply

The Djinn (2021) - 5/10
Promising Young Woman (2020) - 7/10
Big Legend (2018) - 6/10
Cold Hell (2017) - 6/10
American Heist (2014) - 4/10
Iron Sky (2012) - 5/10
The Woman (2011) - 5/10
Middle Men (2009) - 7/10
Bright Angel (1990) - 6/10
The Jigsaw Murders (1989) - 5/10

And out of the ones you watched:

Open 24 Hours - 7/10
Come to Daddy - 6/10
The Island - 6/10

reply

I saw middle men last month and I really liked it. Cool story good acting and the soundtrack was kicking. 7.5/10

Greetings!
Open 24 hours 6/10
The Island 6/10

My week:
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021) 7.8/10 I do enjoy movies like this. I thought it was well done. The story was familiar, and cliché and most likely stolen from other stories, I mean that's what Disney does, but it does it well. I'm not an expert in animation, but I thought it was beautiful. Awkwafina's voice was a little jarring at first, but I honestly didn't mind it. I did enjoy this one.

Boss Level (2021) 8.3/10 Just when I thought I was sick of time loop movies, Boss Level proved me wrong. This was just as fun as the first Happy Death Day. Some of the violence was gloriously over the top. I'm glad to see more movies go this route. This was also the first movie in a while that I liked Mel Gibson in. He's done a lot of crap since his meltdown so I was glad to see him back in form. Frank Grillo was gruff and great. I will probably watch this again some time soon.

Swing Shift (1984) 6/10 I am pretty sure that I had seen at least part of this before but I really didn't remember it. All in all it was okay. I've been reading a lot of books set around WWII lately so I thought, eh why not?. I was disappointed a little. I do really love Hawn and Russell together because they do have great chemistry, and Christine Lahti was beautiful and the best part of the movie, but the story was a bit meh.

The Amusement Park (2019) 6/10 So, if you don't know, this is a PSA filmed by George Romero sometime in 1973 for The Lutheran Society about elder abuse. I guess they didn't like it and buried it for like 45 years. It was surreal, bizarre, and I did feel some empathy for the elderly, it kind of missed the goal posts for me. I did think it was kind of cool that the star of this, Lincoln Maazel, did live to be 106. I hope he was treated better than he was at the Amusement Park.

reply

I’m always impressed when you already saw my more obscur picks. Good job!

Boss level looks like a lot of fun.

Communion (1989)

This is one of those movies that slipped through the cracks on me. When it came out I REALLY wanted to see it and always have but the stars just never lined up. I went through the same thing with Will Smith's Wild Wild West this year.

Anyway, I gave it a 9/10 on the now defunct IMDb scoring system.
I would have LOVED it in 1989. Today I liked it, almost a lot. Mr Walken was great in it. The rest of the cast was too but Walken nailed it.
It's on Amazon PRIME now.

reply

This also happened to me with movies. But 9/10? I think it fair to say you liked it A LOt. No? Anyways, it does look like something I’d watch.

reply

hey! i'm the crank who's always saying 'it's far too hot out' every day of the summer. but i'm glad other people enjoy it.

open 24 hours - i only gave this a 2.5, but i remember it being fun. i might put it on the re-watch list'

come to daddy 3.5 - i wanna give this a re-watch too. i barely remember it, but i recall thinking it was the kind of twisted ugly film that ticks off a lot of my favourite boxes.

the island - i gave that a 2.5 as well. i remember really liking the firs hour, but i thought the action scenes in the back half were too choppy & quickly edited.

my week:

in a glass cage (1986) 4 definitely belongs on any list of the darkest, ugliest films ever made. i wish it was a little shorter, but there's no denying its ugly power.

woman on the run (1950) 4 fun, lean, occasionally very witty. only complaint: the version streaming on prime is colorized, and looks cheap and really quite atrocious. boo for that.

safe (1995) 5 i low-key believe that this is one of the greatest movies ever made.

one of the qualities that elevates it is the sound and score.

the music reminds me in part of coil's rejected hellraiser score. maybe that's just me, but it has that same feeling of creeping horror. it has a bit of goblin in it too, maybe.

streets of fire (1984) 3 i didn't love this.
it has it's fun moments, for sure. it's a silly throwback b-movie, trying to capture 50s rock films, i guess, and it gets some of that.

i wish it had more music.
and i wish i can dream about you hadn't been talked over so much - it's clearly the best song in the film.
& i wish that last song hadn't been such a silly, overblown bonnie tyler sounding track. that was underwhelming.

it's still a fun film. but i really think it could have been better..

macabre (1980) 3 shame that this is such a slog for most of its running time, because there is some crazy shit in here

last shift (2014) 3.5 i definitely under-valued this when i watched it last year.
not that it's great.
but it's really good.
it's really well done, slickly executed and properly paced from beginning to end.

i think this is gonna work its way into my rotation of horror films i'll regularly throw on. it's perfect sunday evening relaxing before work tomorrow stuff.

wild things (1998) 3.5 this movie is trash nirvana.

got me horny.

obsession (19490 3.5 very solid suspense drama. dawdles a little bit, perhaps. it's easy to imagine a tv series giving a story like this a good 50 minute treatment. columbo or something like that.

but it's still a cool little story. cute dog.

camp wedding (2019) 1.5 almost completely devoid of anything enjoyable. it's a comedy that's not funny, it limps along with almost no energy, and it's weirdly confusing, with far too many bland characters. and all that texting really truly messed with my nervers.

i'm easy to please, but this did nothing for me.

pvt chat (2020) 4.5 vinyl copy of the fall's grotesque spotted at 47m20s!!!!!

fall vinyl or no, this is a terrific surprise. not just in its general level of quality, but in the way it changes & is actually sympathetic & even oddly sweet. also filthy in parts. nice nudity. girl is super foxy.

great! highly recommended.

beyond the valley of the dolls (1970) 5 this is one of the most perfect films ever made. all sensible smart people recognize this fact.

hell house llc 3 (20190 3 not as good as the other two, but still very fun.

the amusement park (2019) 4 long lost george romero film now streaming on shudder. absolutely a downer, but an earned downer. very neat to see this resurrected.

the hills have eyes (2006) 4 dawdles a bit in the middle.
a bit too long.

but they did not go lightly on the gore.
if you're gonna make a slasher, make it tough and ugly and brutal.
they did that.

green for danger (1946) 3.5 entertaining if not completely satisfying murder mystery.

it moves along quite nicely, but...all the revelations and surprises aren't really set up in a satisfying way. we just learn them, with none of the classic 'ah, that's why that person was doing that' revelations.

septien (2011) 3 i would have liked this a lot more if it was about tukel & his paintings tbh.

it's quirky and odd, and if you like your indie cinema that way, by all means watch it. it's fine.

but it doesn't really come together in a satisfying way. certainly doesn't land any emotional punches.

afflicted (2013) 4 watch #2 confirms my initial impression that this is a very well made movie. builds its characters properly, and is the rare found footage film that actually has exciting, fun action scenes.

day of the outlaw (1959) 2.5 did not dig this at all tbh. found it very flat and unengaging. tina louise looked smashing, though, and i say that as a marianne man.

reply

possessor (2020) 5 fantastic.
great story that mixes dad's videodrome with chilly 70s sci fi.
some incredible visual moments that actually kinda stunned me.

there are times when i look at films now and think 'can i still get excited by things, or am i too old & tired?'

this truly excited me.

the poughkeepsie tapes (2007) 3.5 the hooker trying to pop that balloon is very, very cute.

big deal on madonna street (1958) 3.5 14m mark contains the least convincing boxing i've ever seen in a movie.

eh...i guess this can be added to the list of films that the universe has declared hilarious and great that kinda glance off of me. it's perfectly pleasant and always amusing & did make me genuinely lol once.

but amiable and pleasant doesn't inspire devotion from me. i'm sure that's my problem. i'm not going to bet that the universe is wrong & i'm right.

but i doubt i'll ever think of this again, and i kinda wish i'd watched something else.

a regular woman (2019) 4 based on true story of a german woman murdered in an honor killing. very powerful.

shiva baby (2020) 4 i kinda hated the main character, yet i cannot deny that i loved this. made me laugh, was totally along for the ride, even though i wish nothing but misery & ill fortunes on the main character.

i never notice things like this, and it doesn't change my feeling on the movie at all, but there are some really glaring continuity errors in the very last scene. i never pick up on stuff like that, so it must be really apparent to everyone else.

waking life (2001) 4 some of the philosophizing here is maybe a bit half baked, not that i'm the final authority on such matters. but i love listening to it anyway. alex jones aside, of course.

but y'know why i can't quite love this? because i've watched tower a bunch of times, and the rotoscope animation in that looks so much cooler to me than this.

it still looks great at times, but i wish it wasn't quite so crude in spots.

horror in the high desert (2021) 3.5 pretty good. night vision may be a cliche, but it hasn't stopped being effective for me.

the only really pissy thing i'd say is that, even at 80m, it really could have been shorter. would have made a good horror short, in fact.

unfriended dark web (2018) 4 i watch things on criterion because i have eat my vegetables and all that.

but i could watch stuff like this all day.

reply

I hope you watched the original Unfriended 2014, before the sequel dark web. The first one was great.

reply

i've seen both films a bunch of times. there are about 7 or 8 films that are sort of cinematic comfort food to me that i have in fairly steady rotation, that i put on at the end of the day every 3 or 4 months, & the unfriended films are definitely on that list.

reply

In a glass cage and Safe are interesting.

I haven’t seen Macabre (1980) but I’m very tempted in buying Macabre (2009). It’s 15$ though... have you seen it?

Wild things: by teenage crush, Denise Richard. A « hard » 7/10

PVT Chat: maybe...

Beyond the valley of the dolls: I’ll have to see it for myself. I don’t always tend to be sensible.

I’m pretty sure I bought the hills have eyes. Might watch it this week.

Afflicted: added to list

Possessor: might watch it tonight

Waking life: 7.5/10

reply

i have not seen the 2009 macabre, but it absolutely looks like something i'd like. not streaming anywhere unfortunately, so i can't test-drive it.
