reply

Seems we have pretty similar tastes....

Will put Two minute Warning and The Little Girl who lives Down the Lane on my watch list. Thanks. Doing the Father Time series, I've really added to it.

reply

"Network" was the best movie, and left of both lists - that explains a lot.

reply

Its #9 on most popular of 1976.

Network was released in mid November of1976 and made 27 mil for that year.

It's incredible showing at the Oscars increased it's status and was re- released in Feb of 1977 (which it made much more money)

I agree that is a great film. But this list ISN'T a best of list. It's what is popular with current users.

I believe IMBD is heavily used by millennials. This is a great film, but it doesn't seem to hold the cache as it did with older generations. Sadly 😔.

I think you are completely right about IMDB being heavily influenced by millenialss. You can read their statistical breakdowns if you click on the number of votes (by age, male/female, etc) -- that is, if IMDB didn't fuck that up, too.. The site is too slow for me to even browse my ratings or watch-list. I always loved looking at the movie lists created from each movie, usually hoping to find recommendations.

"Mikey and Nicky" (and "Next Stop Greenwich Village") is another great movie from 1976 which seems to have been ignored by everybody!

There were some very good foreign movies, like "The Fifth Seal" and "The Punishment"

reply

Cool, my to watch list has really increased from doing this series.

Thanks.

More good films than usual here, on the 2021 list at least.

Again, there's one on the original list which I have never even heard of - To Fly! Some films which are popular in their day vanish into obscurity with time.

**EDIT - So sorry, I just saw your original post and the explanation for the inclusion of To Fly!

My own top ten

1. Small Change
2. Taxi Driver
3. The Outlaw Josey Wales
4. All the President's Men
5. Bound for Glory
6. The Tenant
7. The Desert of the Tartars
8. The Omen
9. Assault on Precinct 13
10. The Front

Good list, I'll put 1,5 and 7 in my to watch list.

Thanks! From the favs you mention in your op, I have never seen Car Wash and The Seven Per Cent Solution... I am interested in seeing both, the latter especially.

Brief comments on my numbers 1/4/7: Small Change (also sometimes known as Pocket Money) is just wonderful - perhaps my favourite from Truffaut - seeming lightweight on the surface but a film of immense charm and depth. All the President's Men is, of course, one of the most famous films of the year, and rightly so, one of the most accessible of political movies and still riveting and relevant today. Desert of the Tartars is a strange movie, one which I watched in tribute to the great Max von Sydow when he passed away last year. One of a kind, with one of Ennio Morricone's greatest scores as a major bonus.

reply

It was a mistake,I meant 5 not 4(which is one of my favs)

Car Wash is a good one if your in the mood for a silly 70's style comedy. Not great by any means , but a good time capsule movie of America in the 1970's.

Seven Percent Solution is a unique Sherlock Holmes film. I enjoyed it, but some of the more fanatical Sherlock fans find it a bit of a aberration. The ending is unusual for a Sherlock Holmes film.

reply

I did think it was odd that you hadn't seen ATPM... LOL

Bound for Glory is just lovely, a beautifully shot biopic with a great performance by David Carradine. I tend not to respond well to music bios but this one is a classic.

I shall certainly be checking out both of your movies soon. Car Wash has great music if nothing else!
