Interesting. My Top 10 according to my Letterboxd ratings:

1. Memento
2. Unbreakable
3. Chopper
4. Snatch
5. American Psycho
6. O Brother Where Art Thou
7. Sexy Beast
8. Nurse Betty
9. High Fidelity
10. Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

reply

Good list I don't think I've seen #8 or #3.

Memento is a really good unique story.

reply

Yeah Memento is a true original and still holds up today.

Iโ€™d really recommend watching Chopper, itโ€™s a fantastic bio of one of Australiaโ€™s most notorious criminal figures and features a career best performance from Eric Bana.

Nurse Betty is one of the blackest comedies youโ€™ll ever see. Renee Zellwegger is great in it, well worth a watch too ๐Ÿ‘

I love Almost Famous. Overall not a really exciting year for films. I'm surprised MI 2 didn't make the lists.haven't seen any of the MI films but it do well money wise.

reply

When the another new MI movie comes out, I'm sure that older ones will be shown on cable and boost MI II popular ranking, at least temporarily.

reply

Malena at #7? What the what? As I've mentioned, these IMDB "popular" lists sound like they're subject to bot manipulation.

reply

I've never heard of that either.
I looked at it and this could be a trend with female genZ's.

I'm unconvinced of bot manipulation, but they are very fluid.

With the death of Charles Grodin "Beethoven" shot up to #1 for 1992 films.

reply

Out of curiosity, I did an IMDB popular search based on the 1987 list you recently posted. The popular list has changed since your post which indicates that they must reflect search queries (Beethoven at #1 bears this out). So instead of "Most Popular" it seems like "Most Recent Searches" would be a more appropriate name.

Here's a side-by-side comparison of today's 1987 "popular" list vs. your list (posted 5 days ago)
1. Princess Bride 1. Princess Bride
2. Predator 2. Predator
3. Full Metal Jacket 3. The Witches of Eastwick
4. Spaceballs 4. The Lost Boys
5. The Lost Boys 5. Full Metal Jacket
6. Dirty Dancing 6. Dirty Dancing
7. Robocop 7. Spaceballs
8. The Witches of Eastwick 8. Robocop
9. The Untouchables 9. Masters of the Universe
10. Masters of the Universe 10. The Untouchables

reply

Yeah if it's fluid it's constantly updating what is popular in that year so it's very touchy to recent searches or events. IMDB doesn't disclose how "popular" is calculated. Recent searches probably weighted, but what is the time frame? One month, one year, Six months? The less the time frame the more accurate it would be. Unlikely that it would be one month or one week because the list wouldn't hold water. So it's either longer than that or the "popular" calculation is more complex.

While not perfect, it's still a good marker for what has become popular with the current crowd.

I can't think of anyone I know who has seen the Four Seasons movie ๐Ÿ™‚. But I can't find a person who hasn't seen Indiana Jones.

reply

Based on your note about Beethoven being at #1 for 1992 movies, it must be a pretty short time frame because now it's at #16. Grodin died on May 18 so it's only been a couple weeks. They must give a lot of extra weight to recent searches. They should be more clear and retitle these rankings as Most Recent Searches, since no one would ever classify Chaplin (currently at #1) as more popular than Aladdin (#19) or Batman Returns (#21). Maybe a better comparison would be Box Office vs. Number of Votes.

Thanks for your help.

That Beethoven has gone back to normal is a good thing! Because that movie was just a flash in the pan of American consciousness from the death of Mr. Grodin.

I guess the key question you've hit on is what is the best definition of "popular"?

The best answer I can come up with is that it's a combination of current public awareness (thus searches) and good memories or feelings about a movie (votes, ratings) The combination of these probably dictates the "popular" rating.

It can be argued that more people have seen and voted for The Grinch that Stole Christmas, than say a more obscure movie, but the movie left little lasting impression, thus the lower popular level, since less people are searching for it and its less in the public consciousness..(who's thinking of THAT film?)So searches is a factor.

If you just go by one or the other (searches or votes) the list becomes too ridged or too chaotic.

I've done some older years, they seem to be a bit more stable than newer ones, since the searches for older movies is less common, and less a factor in the equation.

1967 next!๐Ÿ™‚
