Tom Hanks

He doesn't have the typical good looks of a Hollywood leading man. He's a fantastic actor but there are other great actors out there who never/rarely play a lead role. Especially in big budget films.

How did he manage to be so successful in the vanity of Hollywood?

reply

I imagine it's because he's so good at what he does. And from what I've read, he's a very likable guy with a great sense of humor. Oops. Humour, in your case. πŸ˜‰

I suppose alot of his early roles were comedies so he made connections as he made films maybe.

reply

True. I also think he was smart enough to make friends in the business early on. People such as Ron Howard, during Hanks' guest role on Happy Days. Howard's "Splash" was a big hit, and even though Hanks followed it with a few clunkers, he managed to survive those and improve his acting skills, and move on to better roles and movies.

reply

I think it is a combination of likeability, picking the right roles in good movies, talent and a bit of luck.

reply

I've heard that he's a lovely man.

reply

He seems smart, humble and charming

I don't make movies but if I did Tom Hanks would be my first pick for a lead...he can do it all

Drama, action, cartoons, Hanks nails it

reply

So true. A lot of actors can't manage both comedic and dramatic roles. Hanks can.

reply

Exactly! Also, he’s one of those actors who I sometimes forget it’s him during a performance because he is so believable as the character.

reply

I agree - you forget it's him.

reply

Yes
His performance in Road To Perdition was quite the opposite of Forrest Gump

Hanks is just top shelf

reply

Yes!
Or Philadelphia to Saving Private Ryan. There aren’t many like him.

STILL WAITING ON THE TOM HANKS HORROR FILM TO COMPLETE THE SPECTRUM...DUDE IS ICONIC.

reply

It's because he's so good at hiding his darkest secrets. Observe:

he doesn't fool me

He is a great actor and plays very likeable characters in my opinion.

I remember seeing him in screwball comedies such as Bachelor Party and The Money Pit and enjoying his characters back in the 80s.

I also enjoyed him in serious roles such as in Philadelphia and The Green Mile. He killed it in Forrest Gump!

Tom Hanks is very versatile. He could play most any character. Hell, he even played Mr. Rogers!

reply

The everyman...with a James Stewart type of movie career.

NEVER PLAYED A BAD GUY!.. just like Stewart.

(Road to Perdition comes closest, but even in that he is a family man looking after his son)

reply

I'd love to see him as the baddie!

I remember watching an old Hammer episode where Peter Cushing turned out to be the antagonist and I was so shocked because he was always good in everything else I'd seen him in. It was a great twist to the story.

reply

How about The Ladykillers?

reply

Yes! I forgotten about that movie thanks.

It was such a poorly received remake.

But he played a comedy baddy...not a real hard core killer so I would only count that has half a bad guy.πŸ˜€

reply

I don't think I've ever seen him in a film that I didn't like.

reply

Me either. I watched cast away again yesterday and cried again when Wilson was lost at sea !

reply

Did you know, Wilson has his own MovieChat board, lol: -
