reply

peanut butter falcon is a terrific film. i really enjoyed it when i caught it in the threatres.

the hunt - was this the 2020 hunt, or the mads mikkelsen film from 2012? the 2012 film is great, but it is a massive downer, a really sad film.

reply

Airport terminal pack sounds great. I’ve been searching for Concord Affair 77’ directed by Ruggero Deodato streaming with no luck.

reply

It's got;
Airport, 1970
Airport 1975
Airport 1977 ( trapped under water in the *gasp* Bermuda triangle! Stars Jack Lemmon)
The Concorde: Airport 1979
✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈✈🛩🛬

reply

Airport, 1970 is my favorite of those because some of it was filmed at Minneapolis-St Paul airport. I remember my grandfather taking us kids there to watch planes take off and land. There was a great outdoor viewing spot that was built for just that purpose. You climbed a spiral staircase to get up to the viewing platform. I have no idea when that went away.

Watching that movie and seeing the airport scenes is pure nostalgia for me.

reply

I just watched it. Very nostalgic indeed.

reply

It was great for that time. Plenty of stars in it, too.

People criticize older movies and their special effects, but I think they give it short shrift. Today's audiences are so used to CGI that they don't take into account the limitations of technology back then. Directors and special effects people had to be very creative to create those situations.

One moment in that movie that still gets me is when Barry Nelson, as Captain Harris, straps on the oxygen mask and says, "Mayday, mayday." I thought it was quite a dramatic moment.

reply

I agree completely about the special effects. We should also mention the music - it was perfect for raising the tension level.

reply

Oh, yes! Some folks don't realize how important the score is.

reply

I got Cruel Jaws (1995) on DVD in the mail recently.

I also went to a resale shop yesterday and bought Deep Red (1975) on VHS and the soundtrack from Superfly (1972) on vinyl.

reply

I haven't seen Cruel Jaws, but I have seen Deep Red.

reply

It’s an Italian Jaws rip off that so bad it’s good.

reply

"Airplane and Airplane 2 blu ray"

that's a great idea, i should update my collection with those 2 classics!
are there a lot of interviews/special features?

reply

On the first one, there is a commentary with the directors, a trivia track, and the long haul version which has deleted scenes and interviews. Airplane 2 doesn't have any special features on it.

reply

awesome, thanks !

Lincoln (2012) - Blu-ray
The Buccaneer (1958) - DVD
Matinee (1993) - DVD ... that movie within a movie thread brought back good memories of this one
Gorky Park (1983) - Blu-ray
The Crew (2000) - Blu-ray
The Last Picture Show (1971) - DVD
The Wheeler Dealers (1963) - Blu-ray

reply

You can now add Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964) to my above list as I just ordered the DVD from Amazon.
It is scheduled to arrive tomorrow.

reply

I have just ordered two more from Amazon, both of which are scheduled to arrive Friday, March 12th.
They are ...
Ghost World (2001) - Criterion Collection Blu-ray
Lost In Translation (2003) - Blu-ray

reply

Just ordered four more films from Amazon.
Prior to this order, I only had three films with John Wayne in my DVD/Blu-ray collection.
They were ...
How the West Was Won (1962) - Blu-ray
In Harm's Way (1965) - DVD
The Cowboys (1972) - Blu-ray

I have now added ...
Donovan's Reef (1963) - DVD
McLintock! (1963) - DVD
Hellfighters (1968) - DVD

As part of this order, I also bought the DVD of
The Hallelujah Trail (1965) - a very funny western starring Burt Lancaster, Lee Remick and Brian Keith

All four are scheduled to arrive Thursday, March 11th.
So that makes seven films I've ordered today. Definitely time to take a break.

I have a question for you, Allaby - and any others who are DVD/Blu-ray collectors. Is your collection insured? I ask because I'm sure you have a fair amount of money invested in this. I know that people with expensive jewelry, etc., usually get an insurance rider of some kind to protect things that are very expensive.

(I guess I'm just in an insurance mindset because I was just looking at my homeowners coverage that is up for renewal soon.)

reply

i assume it would be covered under what we call "contents" insurance. how you would value it would be another matter.

reply

That's what I thought, but if you've got $10,000, or whatever, worth of movies, you'd have to prove somehow you spent that much, wouldn't you? And couldn't the insurance company require that you have a rider policy for something like this?

reply

I have regular home insurance, which I would think should cover it. I'm not sure how it works on the insurance company's end or what proof they would require or what stipulations they have.
