Is Clint Eastwood Still The Biggest Star in Movies?

I think so.

I think if you ask a random person, whether its in America or Earth, you'll get more affirmatives when you say the name Clint Eastwood than the others mentioned.

I also think if he released a movie he was in tomorrow it would be a box office smash. His last one wasn't because he only directed. But I don't know anyone who hasn't seen "Grand Torino", including people like me who don't watch all new movies, but I saw it ONLY because Clint was in it. The other actors were awful, especially the siblings next door.

I think you underestimated Earth. Yes, maybe Clint is still a household name in the US, or maybe in The West. But in the rest of the world, I don't think so. Old people might still recognise his name because he was in the movies they know when they were young, or some movie aficionados, but certainly not random young people outside The West. The Earth is not just USA and Western Europe.

Clint is big in Japan (and Asia in general).. South America (probably because of those Leone movies), and I know people from the Middle-East are aware of him. Can't imagine Africa not knowing him, but I think less would know the others mentioned at a lesser rate.

reply

Not really. I'm an Asian living in Asia (couple of years in Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea and Taiwan. My wife is a Taiwanese) and no, Clint is totally nowhere near big here and now. Japan I don't know. But it's possible because they already have healthy cinemas in the 60s and 70s when Clint's movies were the only game in town basically. Same can be said with Hong Kong. Other countries not so much.

reply

I'm guessing Japan is due to the movie about Iwo Jima

I thought the neighbor boy 'Toad' was a bit weak but that Hmong teen neighbor girl was pretty solid, she played off Eastwood's gruff character very well
She was charming imo

reply

I love Clint

But no, he’s not.

He’s still a legend though and one of the greatest of all time. Which I think is enough.

reply

Well said
We will never see another Clint again
Lucky for us he's still around and hopefully working on projects

reply

We should do a thread where we show obscure or hard to find titles. I have several babies I’m proud of. 😀

reply

Not as an actor anymore but I would consider him as top talent as a director. He has directed several very fine films.

reply

The last movie he acted in was "Gran Torino" - I remember everyone seeing that movie. Including myself!

reply

No.

reply

No. I'd be surprised if he even has much of a recognition factor with the new generation coming up.

reply

Hmmm, why not? I knew about many actors and directors from the past when I was young. Why would this generation be different?

reply

Because the nieve like to make generalisations about the young, pretend they are oblivious. When in actual fact, and get used to it, these folks are running companies, creating new inventions everyday. Shortsighted to think all young people can't look back, let alone haven't been able to have seen a Clint Eastwood flick.

reply

I think he's still a star. If there is anyone in "Hollywood" that can get a movie made with no questions ask it's Eastwood.

reply

Take his last movie he acted and directed - Gran Torino.. He was about 80 years old.

150 Million - US
270 Million - Worldwide

IMDB Score - 8.2 (750,000 votes - great sample size)

Can anyone try to estimate an actor (who also directed) who'll have these results at 80. I can't think of anyone.

reply

I don’t think anyone could argue with that.
