What did the MovieChat Nation watched this week? (02/14-02/20)

Let the Nation rise up, I mean, sit down, and watch many more movies. Now duty calls, tell me what you watched this week:

Beyond re-animator (2003 Tubi): I don’t think this is a bad movie per say but it is not a good reanimator movie. It lacks that wicked and relentless spark that made the others so zany and fun. This one seems to take itself a bit to seriously, was a bit drab at times not to say boring. The actors we’rent bad given the material they had to work with. The sexy reporter trope wasn’t too shabby either. One thing that really stood out was the soundtrack it was very Gothamesque and was even too good for the movie at times. Slightly below average movie. 5/10

Unhinged (2021 Netflix): First of all, let me say that the guy was right; she should’ve give a courtesy tap. Secondly, this movie is far-fetched but only one part really took me out of the movie; spoiler when she got those 2-3 foot stumps in the face in her mother’s house. She would’ve lay down and stayed down. For at least 10 minutes. I also wonder why Russell Crowe went through all this process when they could just have hired John Goodman and have the exact same good result. Because yes the movie was positive for me because it made me feel tensed, made my heart beat fast and kept me on the edge of my seat. But honestly I kept thinking about John Goodman and how he lost money here. Oh and the final scene was so dumb I almost took half a point off but didn’t. 7/10

Lone Ranger (2013 TV): I watched 12 Strong recently and this one was quite superior in my opinion. It was actually a perfectly entertaining movie with one major flaw; all the actors were great but I thought that my boy Mark Wahlberg was miscast. My rating: 8/10

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015 Netflix): I bumped my rating from 7.5 to 8 because let’s be honest, this is a kick ass action movie.

Marty (1955) -- First time I had ever seen it.

reply

That is a really good movie.

reply

I re-watched Marty just a couple of weeks ago. Ernest Borgnine was great in it, a very touching performance by both Betsy Blair (nominated for Supporting Actress Oscar) and him. Hollywood agreed, awarding him the Best Actor Oscar for his performance, beating out James Cagney, Frank Sinatra, James Dean, and Spencer Tracy.

reply

Looks like a nice little romance

reply

You should watch the movies that I plan on watching. If you do what are you planning on watching thread then we can match.

reply

True!! I found out that when I do that thread it spoils movies for to guessing game though... 🤷‍♂️

reply

Emma (2020): Looks low budget after watching Bridgerton. Disappointing script.

Patch of Blue (1965): I saw this before. Great performances from Sidney Poitier, Shelley Winters who won an Oscar and Elizabeth Hartman who died too young.

reply

Haven’t seen yours but please do come back next week ✌️

From Prada to Nada (2011) 4/10 I was looking for something light and somewhat romantic. I love sense and sensibility so I thought why not?? There are so many reasons why not, and I will just leave it at that.

The Last Days on Mars (2013) 5/10 I swore I had seen this before, but I didn't remember anything really about it except that everything looked familiar. I think it's because it's unmemorable. It's a mash up of so many better Science fiction movies. The performances were the only thing that kept me watching as I really liked the cast.

Joy Ride (2001) 6/10 Another rewatch for me this week. I remember liking it when I first saw it, but I don't think it help up. I didn't really like any of the characters this time around and so I didn't really care what happened to them. Again it was a bit of a copycat of better done movies.

Copycat (1995) 8/10 Yes this movie has it's problems, but I don't care. I have always really enjoyed this movie and I watch it every couple of years. I still really enjoy it and I think that Sigourney Weaver is such a pleasure to watch.

The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020) 6/10 I'm torn on this one because there was so much that I liked about it, and then there was Jim Cummings. He was just a little too much at times, and more than once took me completely out of the film. Other than Jim, I thought the cast was great, and I liked the story. It knew what it was and didn't try to be more.

Little Monsters (2019) 7.5/10 I loved this movie, and I didn't think it was possible for me to be more in love with Lupita Nyong'o, but I was wrong. I adored her in this. The story is super cliche, and I thought I was done with zombie movies, but this really worked for me. Josh Gad sometimes really irritates me, but he wasn't bad in this. I thought the movie had heart, and it was funny without being slapstick.

The Rental (2020) 5/10 Another movie with characters that I didn't care about at all. None of them seemed to have any redeeming qualities which made their plight somewhat pointless as an audience member. The story is something nothing new, it's a mix between 13/14 Cameras, Vacancy, and The Strangers. While it was better than the 13/14 Cameras movies, it just was blah. Not even my crush on Dan Stevens could make me like this more.

Finished rewatching Dollhouse Season 1 7.5/10 I liked this better the last time I watched it, and I did skip the epitaph episode as I'm going to watch them both when I finish season two. Things felt overly dramatic this time around, but I still really like the concept. I think it would have been better with a different cast.

Joy ride: good for what it is. 6.5/10

Copycat: added to my quest of watching all movies of 1995

I got Little Monsters on my wish list since a while and got a big check of money this week so if I don’t find it on Tubi or Netflix I’ll buy it. It’s 15$

reply

I rented it. I didn't find it on a streaming service.

Ten Little Indians (1965) - solid adaptation, good cast, Shirley Eaton is stunning 7/10

A Life of Her Own (1950) - a simple good film but I still can't see why Lana Turner is so head over heels for the Ray Milland character, interesting writing in the last few scenes 6/10

The Thing from Another World (1951) - one of my favorite 50s SF films, watched it a dozen times now, I like it almost as much as Carpenter's version and I never expected that 9/10

The Last of Sheila (1973) - my third viewing, a great murder mystery that is even more fun to watch again because of the little clues I didn't notice the first time, a superb cast, the dvd features a highly entertaining commentary by Richard Benjamin, Dyan Cannon and Raquel Welch 9/10

Groundhog Day (1993) - I have watched this three times this month alone, a brilliant film, Murray at his very best 10/10

Groundhog Day: classic for sure! 8/10

I watched the first series of Badehotellet (Seaside Hotel) - 2013, Danish with subtitles, on PBS. Beginning in the summer season of 1928, it takes place at a seaside hotel near Skagen, Denmark's northernmost town. It follows the activities of both guests and employees of the hotel. Interesting presentation of social norms and standards of that time. Ensuing seasons cover the summers of 1928-32 and 1939-40. Interesting that one of the characters is an actor. He speaks Danish, but when he plays the piano for other guests, he sings the songs in English. 7.5/10

Detectorists - series 3, 2017, DVD - Took me a while to get around to watching the final series after really enjoying the first two. This series did not let me down. 8/10

Aye!! Always a pleasure having you over 😉

I've found myself watching lots of holocaust related films. Not sure why. There's been some testimonials (lots of these on youtube) , some of which are very long.

The best film I saw was Escape From Sobibor which somebody mentioned in another post. What a fantastic film! I was holding my breath at the end. It's a shame it's not a better known film.

9/10.

Cool, I’ll look it up
