How come it's so quiet here lately?

Each day on GD only seems to have about one page( if that), instead of two or three like it used to.

Where's everyone gone?

reply

Chased away by the trolls and sock puppets that have infested the place.

reply

People need to learn to use the ignore function ๐Ÿ˜•.

reply

That doesn't help much. Because the old crew has retreated the trolls and sock puppets are posting most of the new threads and they are uninspiring, to say the least. So the place is not as interesting as it was.

reply

It's a shame. I hope it picks up again.

reply

I hope so too.

reply

same

reply

Yes. I get traumatized by abstractions of people typing at me!!

reply

Yep. Shit moderation will kill a site.

reply

As will shit posters who do nothing but moan about the moderators.

Now I finally understand your deal, Artisan/Forsaken/TrussRod.

Fyi, you're supposed to lay low when trying to sneak back in.

reply

๐Ÿคญ

Well that shut him up!

reply

He hasn't posted since.

reply

The site sells advertising so the more members and more posts the more it can charge. It doesn't care about quality.

reply

It's always quiet here. That's one of the reasons I post both here, and on another site. The other site is much livelier.

๐Ÿ˜Ž

reply

You always post this and it's always wrong.

Their "General Discussion" section includes posts from their entire site. To make an accurate comparison, you have to look our "Latest Posts" section vs. their "General Discussion" section.

https://moviechat.org/latest

Currently twice as many posts here vs there.

reply

I did not make any comparison about the volume of posts, Mr. Mod5. I said the other site was more lively. That is my opinion. You have no justification to say that my opinion is wrong, just like I have none to say that your opinion is wrong. We're not talking about facts here, we're talking about opinions.

Why are you castigating me for my honest opinion? What are you afraid of?

๐Ÿ˜Ž

reply

I KNOW WHERE YOU POST...IT SUCKS,IT SUCKS REAL BAD...AND ITS NOT LIVELIER THAN IT IS HERE.๐Ÿค”

reply

It's MUCH livelier than here, but whatever, Bobby Jo.

๐Ÿ˜Ž

reply

No one deserves to have their wiener chopped off for voicing an opinion.

Thanks, Moon!

Moviebuff complaints are down 75% this quarter...

Say what you will, he does generate traffic around here. I wonder where heโ€™s gone ๐Ÿค”

reply

Your right. I hope all is well with him.

reply

We have Intothenight now. It's something!

reply

Something maybe, but nothing good.

reply

๐Ÿ‘

reply

LOL

reply

Maybe he's currently occupied now that his glory hole is drawing in record business.

reply

Definitely because there are not many new movies worth talking about.

2019 has Joker, which was the most (movie-related) traffic ever graced this site. Plus, Avengers: Endgame, The Irishman, Captain Marvel, Parasite, etc. Big stuffs. Plenty of talking points.

2020? Meh. Maybe Tenet is the only one sparks discussions. Still, it's underwhelming. Wonder Woman is even more disappointing.

2021 is even worse. I think everything is delayed or outright canceled. Studios will only release movies they know it's cheap or bad / mediocre so they won't lose too much potential box office return. I don't even want to discuss "what are your most anticipated 2021 movies." Because it's a sad empty list.

reply

Definitely because there are not many new movies worth talking about.

This^^

It's not moviechat going down, it's cinema industry going down.

reply

Agree. I haven't been on here that long, but there's just not that much new stuff to talk about. The site also has a short memory, in the sense that only the last few discussion topics show up on the front page feeds. It's not easy to keep a topic going. I don't exactly mind the trolls, except their posting brings those topics to the top. Unless you actually WANT to talk about those topics, that just pushes more interesting topics downward.

reply

The trending section is terrible. I believe Jim thought it was simply a placeholder, and he would program a more sophisticated method to handle "trending" properly. But then MoviChat doesn't go as well as he was hoping and he basically leave this site alone and moved on.

This site is basically in a state of not too promising to invest on, but not as bad as it needs closure. Maybe the ad revenues is just enough to cover server and domain billings.

reply

seems fine to me.
The trending section shows which 'boards' the last dozen or so posts went on.
what more do you want?

reply

A real "trending" section. What we got now is not "trending" but simply "last posted on" which is not very useful.

reply

so whats the difference?
What does a real 'trending' section do?

reply

To show what boards are currently flocked by users relatively more than other boards.

For example, in 10 hours the board for the movie King Kong vs Godzilla has been visited (or posted) by 100 users. On the other hand, all other boards mostly got 10 visits. Therefore the King Kong vs Godzilla board is "trending." Eventhough there is no activity in this board for some time, it should not be burried under all other boards that were recently posted.

What we got now is not "trending" but "last posted" boards. Whenever a user posts something in that board, the system pushed it to the front, obscuring other boards which may or may not actually have more activity recently, just not at that particular time. Which has its purpose, but not exactly what "trending" is supposed to show.

reply

I thought it was because I blocked so many people! Even then I was thinking it was much quieter. As I have mentioned many times before, the appalling moderators on this site as well as the generally aggro vibe will push more and more away. Soon you will just have trolls.

reply

Then you will fit right in.

reply

What kind of vibe do you feel movie chat has thatโ€™s apt to push people away?

reply

A very aggressive vibe also some very crass posts on some boards. Cliques. Anonymous moderators.

It doesn't make for a pleasant site.

reply

Lots of users cannot converse and discuss a subject, usually containing disagreeing opinions and automatically resort to childish and ignorant insults.
๐Ÿ™„๐Ÿ˜‘

reply

Ikr. What a bunch of stupidheads!

reply

I respect your opinion, although Iโ€™ve never felt ill effects of those things personally.

reply

Thank you, and thatโ€™s good.

I play Devilโ€™s Advocate and try to understand other peopleโ€™s point of view and get to the bottom of where their opinions lie, whether I personally think they are โ€˜goodโ€™ or โ€˜badโ€™. Everyone can have their own opinions of course. I want to converse and discuss as a level headed adult, I provide information, I can ask a lot of questions etc. I am prepared to agree to disagree and I never go out to insult or deride other users at all, but I sometimes get those thrown my way or get lumped in with groups those people think Iโ€™m aligned with - that they donโ€™t like or disagree with - which they insult and deride.
Itโ€™s such a shame.

But hey! Thatโ€™s all in the fun of the Internet. I donโ€™t take it personally at all! No skin off my nose.

reply

99% this^^^

My 1% difference is that I will sometimes be rude to those who cannot be civil (and to poor Theman18 as petty revenge for being tortured by his comma-studded, run-on sentences.)

Thanks!
.....and sure, we all have to have a little bit of fun now and again donโ€™t we?

reply

I've only found aggression over in politics. All the other pages are ok for the most part. A little tiff here and there but thats to be expected.

reply

> I've only found aggression over in politics.

And I'd add that from what I've seen, 99% of what aggression does happen outside the Politics section is by people who insist on exporting politics outside the Politics forum.

reply

And their racial/religious/gender/homophobic bigotry, too.

reply

And their racial/religious/gender/homophobic bigotry, too.

And here we have an example of one users that starts to insult other users out of the blue.

reply

I comment about racist, etc. comments being a problem along with political comments outside the Political boards and YOU become upset.
Interesting.

reply

I didn't become upset. I just stated the fact that in a conversation about how some users are overly aggressive, you just intervened out of the blue and started insulting other users.

reply

You're the one being overly aggressive by PERSONALLY attacking me.

It's obvious my comment against bigotry on a movie site has made you very upset.

reply

I have not been to the Politics section and donโ€™t think I ever will.
I really donโ€™t want to get involved in that.

reply

You have good sense!

reply

๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜Ž

reply

Good for you! I read Latest posts, I just wish there was a way to ignore that entire sub-forum, I've no interest in American Politics.

reply

Yep!
Me too.

reply

Natural trajectory of an internet forum? This place suffers from not actually being IMDb.

reply

Definitely

reply

I haven't been talking much due to issues at home. Mom's horribly sick and the dog died recently. Sorry if I haven't had time to talk about movies or kvetch/snark about politics.

reply

Sounds a tough time.

Maybe a trip to politics and vent your frustration on them will do you good! (Sorry for making light of the situation, it's my coping mechanism ๐Ÿ’ฉ).

reply

Everyone handles problems differently. I usually only snark about politics if I'm in a teasing mood, or I'm really angry about something, and I feel neither at the moment. However, I have found ways of handling the grief, such as:

- talking about it with the family
- hugs
- providing support for my family too, since they're grieving
- crying as much as needed, and keeping a steady supply of tissues and bottled water (it's scary how dehydrated you can get from crying)
- housework
- home maintenance
- cooking
- internet surfing
- computer gaming
- reading new books
- talking about it online with friends (I have gotten a lot of love and sympathy sent that way :D )
- journaling

I think someday we'll get another dog, since our home isn't quite complete without one, but we need time to mourn right now. When our Malamute, Aspen, passed away, it was three years before we adopted Ginger, and when she passed on, it was a month before we adopted Domino. I have no idea when we might get another dog, but for now, I'm just fine caring for mom at present.

reply

It's so awful when a pet dies because others don't really understand that they really are a member of the family just like any human (and better in alot of cases!) ๐Ÿ˜ฟ

reply

That's not even the worst part. Much as I respect the Veterinarian profession, I am angry that they still treat pets like luxuries, because they are not, especially not in this age of Emotional Support Animals.

The vet we took our dog to suggested we put him in an animal hospital that specialized in sonograms, and he could be an in-patient and get the medicines and care he needed. Just one small problem. The entire package would cost over $2,000-3,000! :O And we don't really have medical pet insurance! It cost us $1,000 just to have the examination, the X-ray, the diagnosis, and the pills for the visit! :O My dad had to take money out of savings! Imagine how impossible that would have been if we were poor!

It makes me angry how much they are swindling rich people who have nothing better to do than worry over their pets, or charging so much for the same treatment you'd give a human with the same ailment. They make it much too easy to just plain old put the dog down. I mean, $160-$215 for euthanasia, vs. thousands of dollars for real pet hospital care. Seems extremely unfair if you ask me. And the vets are not good at telling customers that there is such thing as pet health insurance, and what things the different plans cover. It makes me very upset at times.

Oh yeah, we couldn't even see our regular vet to diagnose Domino's condition. I mean, I set up an appointment that would have taken 10 days longer to wait for, 10 days longer than we had. We were just lucky the small clinic at the back of Petsmart had an opening, despite them not being our regular vet. The veterinarians we normally had were swamped because a.) the doctors weren't coming in more than a few times a week, and b.) everyone has been home due to the lockdowns, and have nothing better to do than worry over their pets, causing the clinics to be booked solid. They did, however, have some time available to put our dog to sleep, but I'm annoyed that they haven't been all that helpful otherwise lately.

reply

Sorry to hear that. Hope your mom gets better soon!

reply

Thank you. I hope she does as well.

reply

Condolences, Amerigirl. May your mother recover full health soon and your pet memories never tarnish.

reply

Thank you. I'm gonna do the same thing with Domino as I have done with our past dogs; I'm going to remember him as he was when he was young and healthy. He gave us many good memories to look back on, and made his mark in our family. He even taught me that having boy dogs was not a bad thing at all. He broke every stereotype I knew about male dogs. Even people who did not know him loved him, particularly kids :D

reply

Iโ€™m sorry to hear youโ€™ve been having a hard time, and for your loss.
