Who would have predicted that "moderator" would be a job in 1975?

I prime example of how easy is it to see the destructive power of technology, but much harder to see it's new jobs.

Debate moderators existed since 1800s maybe.

A job? Someone actually gets paid to do that? :)

Compuserve and AOL were both in business in 1985, and many cities had one or more computer services run by local entrepreneurs. Access was by modem over plain old telephone service. Those often had forums and such, and with it the need for some authority to set rules and enforce them when necessary. I don't remember if such a person was called a moderator back then, it seems to me that "admin" was the norm.

🙂 I'll change it to 1975... thanks.

I'm still wrapping my head around "social media influencer" not knocking it those guys get free stuff and money all the time. I'm just jealous.

reply

Yeah, that's another one.

Or that guy who plays video games while making juvenile comments someho makes 8 million a year. (and frustrates many parents who have kids that aspire to be him)

reply

Yeah it's weird. Recently I came across a Youtube vid where the makers invite you to watch a film with them, out of curiosity I clicked on it thinking they might show the film and make comments or something throughout it. No, the viewer doesn't actually get to see the film at all, what you do get to see is these three dickheads watching the film! I wouldn't have been into the first idea either but at least it made some sense and was accurate as per their title.

I play guitar and the amount of people getting free stuff because they sit there playing guitar or talking about guitars is crazy too.

It's sad that so many kids and teens wanna be that, but fame is always seductive, just look at all the reality TV crap over the last 20 years, talentless people will do anything for their 15 minutes.

Back in the 90’s when David Bowie said the internet was going to be the new rock 'n roll I was down with that, what he didn’t tell us was that it was going to be full of gormless little influencers posing in various ways of shock or surprise on their YouTube thumbnails! 😡

reply

Yeah the only good thing about the net is it has kind of allowed people to bypass the record studios and labels etc so you have that DIY ethic again. But so much of it is just crap too.
