Times A Movie Character's Fate Was Worse Than Death

I recently watched The Skeleton Key with Kate Hudson for the second time (recommended for horror fans) and the ending actually affected me more this time around than it did during my first viewing. The first time I was just surprised by the twist. But while watching it again, knowing what would ultimately happen, it occurred to me that the fate of Kate's character Caroline was worse than death. I'm wondering, what are some movie characters who, in your opinion, have a fate worse than outright death?

Some I can think of, besides Caroline, are:

David from The Mist (2007)
Wallace from Tusk (2014)
Anna from Martyrs (2008)
Wade from House of Wax (2005) - He does eventually die, but it's incredibly slow and cruel.

reply

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. The main character is paralyzed throughout his entire body with the exception of one eye.

reply

I'll have to check that one out. Full-body paralysis is one of my worst fears.

reply

It's a great movie. About 70% of it is in the POV of that one working eye.

reply

that's the first thing i thought of as soon as i saw the thread title.

the book is also very much worth reading.

i have always thought that life would be worth living in almost all circumstances. if i could still read a book, enjoy a movie, whatever.

but after reading his book, i am putting that on my list of 'death is better' cases.

reply

I can't imagine what it must feel like to be completely paralyzed. You can't even watch a movie without someone being beside you to turn it on, turn the volume down or put the next movie on. And that's just movie watching. I can only imagine doing things that are of a necessity. Not being able to move your entire body is torture.

SPOILER

Immortal encased in gold at bottom of ocean.

reply

Hey it's the same thing as in The Old Guard.

reply

I've never seen that one. That fate sounds miserable, though.

reply

John kreese, karate kid 2.

Must be true Mr miyagi even says it.

reply

I've seen that movie but it's been many years and I only remember bits and pieces of it. Refresh my memory, what happens to John Kreese?

reply

After the tornement kreese strangled Johnny (his top student) Mr miyagi intervenes and pretends to give him a killer karate chop( but doesn't he honks his nose), after Dainiel says you could of kiled him couldn't you Mr miyagi says yes, Daniel says why didn't you then?, Mr miyagi says something like man with no forgiveness in heart, living is even worse punishment than death.

reply

Oh yeah, I vaguely remember that now. That's a good example. It reminds me of that quote, "A coward dies a thousand times before his death, but the valiant taste of death but once."

reply

I hadn't watched the karate kids for years until a few years ago then cobra Kai came out, if you've not watched it I recommend 're watching the 3 films then the series. I loved it.

reply

Agreed
The first couple of the Karate Kids are classics and Cobra Kai is pure entertainment 👍

reply

Yep, watching the last starfighter at the min I can't get enough 80s at the moment lol.

reply

LOL

reply

Lol did I give a good explanation 😂😂

reply

Pretty much accurate. I just tend to laugh at that scene. Martin Kove nailed the expression.

reply

Yeah great scene.

Grey (Logan Marshall-Green) in Upgrade (2018)
Tim (Brenton Thwaites) in Oculus (2013)

reply

The ending of Oculus really got to me. I felt horribly for Tim. Good choice!

I still need to see Upgrade.

reply

Rex from The Vanishing (1988)
Amy from Megan is Missing (2011)

I know they both will die, but like Wade from House of Wax it's slow and cruel.

Cheryl from Dread (2009)
Lindsay from The Human Centipede (2009)

reply

Oh yeah, I forgot about Rex. Poor guy, his fate was awful.
I haven't seen Megan Is Missing but I just looked it up. I'll have to put that one on my watch list.

I also haven't seen Dread yet. That one's been on my watch list but, for some reason, I haven't gotten to it yet.
I've only seen bits and pieces of The Human Centipede but know enough about it to know what happens to Lindsay. I definitely agree, MUCH worse than death.

reply

Megan is Missing is a bit of a tedious watch, but it's not as horrible as some of the reviews have made it.
