What would it take to drive you insane?

Serious question. As someone who's teetering on the brink of madness, I'm curious what things in your own life would it take to literally drive you innsane? Serious responses only plz

Reading the bilge that’s so often posted here will do it. I just read a post that contained the “word” “interlectuals” when the poster meant “intellectuals.” The post went on to say that anyone who describes himself thus is stupid.

Listening to the same song again and again. Also a pain that would cause so much discomfort that I could never be comfortable.

i just started having tinnitus in my right ear. its been going on since thanksgiving.... every second...i cant sleep, if i get to sleep, it suddenly wakes me up in the middle of the night. and its loud. its not a "background hiss", its an air horn. constantly. over everything. the closes relief is the shower, but i can still hear it.

reply

I know your struggle. I've had it for over 10 years in both ears, though my left ear is way worse. There are times I wake up an my hearing is muffled and it takes an hour to go back to the way it was. It took about a year for it to get a little better than it was at first. Now I don't even notice it for 80% of the time even though I can hear it. You just become used to it. The only times I notice it is when it suddenly gets worse, but it always goes down.

"you'll get use to it" is what i hear from stories on the tinnitus talk forum. its very weird stuff. yesterday at 8:30am my left ear started to ring, it centered the noise and at about 9am.... both ears went clear....it gave me a break of clear silence for a handful of hours. then the right ear came back in the afternoon. strange shit man.

reply

I can't tell you how many times the ringing completely stopped and I thought "I'm cured!" Then a little later it comes back with a vengeance. Thankfully I've heard that the overwhelming majority of people don't get worse.

reply

do you know the cause for yours? or was it out of the blue?
edit: mine changes sounds with mouth movement. yawns sends the ringing to both ears. doctor suspects a jaw issue. i was wearing an earbud in my right ear the day it started. but the doctor seemed quite confident it wasn't acoustic trauma

reply

I'm not sure the cause but it might be because I have a clicking jaw. One day night I heard a loud ringing, then the next day it was a lot worse. I went to the doctor after a few days and she said it was an ear infection and gave me medication but I went back. When they checked my jaw it was inconclusive that it was the cause. I don't see how it could be anything else. I never use headphones, and I wasn't near anything that could have damaged it.

ok... interesting, thank you for the info. i think im in the same boat.
my jaw used to pop alot when i was a kid.

in november 2 coworkers i share a forklift with tested positive for covid. about a week later after they are sent home i noticed my joints were clicking. elbows, wrists, ankles, knees and jaw (oddly not fingers). my jaw popped a handful of times that week. once it popped hard where i could feel bone grinding bone. it hasnt done this in decades.

hearing your story makes me feel better really. theres a certain level of self loathing to think you caused bodily damage through carelessness. they said my jaw seems in place now and the tinnitus may cure on its own if its a strained muscle or it may not.

i wasnt sure i believed the doctor. unlike you, i have other possibilities. i wear earbuds probably 4/5 hours everyday. even though 90% of the time i listen to talk shows. i also work in a somewhat loud factory. but its not jack hammers or anything like that.

thanks again for your story. this shit can drive you insane. but im more confident its a jaw issue hearing your story than i was.

I started feeling better when I heard famous musicians have it too: Barbara Streisand, Ozzy Osbourne, Huey Lewis, Pete Townshend, Phil Collins. I figure if musicians can go decades performing with it, then I'll be okay.

But don't beat yourself up on it thinking it's your fault. No one thinks they're listening to music too loud. If they knew it was causing damage to their ears, they would have stopped. We're not built with decibel metres in our heads.

I just wanted to chime in and say I feel your pain. I’ve had tinnitus since my early 20’s, and I’m in my late 40’s now.

reply

Has it stayed the same? Thankfully mine has. I know David Letterman has it and said his has gotten worse, but it's rare for that to happen.

reply

It’s the same but I notice it less and less than I did at first. It’s in only one ear for me, and is finally only noticeable in quiet situations. It’s like I can tune it out most times.

reply

Same with me. The first little while I had it, it was so loud and drove me insane. Now I only notice it when it's quiet, but sometimes when it's quiet, it's a gentle humming.

reply

not much. i'm easily irritated.

The thing that gets on my nerves most at this point is human voices. Especially children. As I get older I get more aware that I have something autistic-like going on upstairs and one of my major frustrations is sound, more to the point, human sounds.

reply

I have a bit of that too. Crowded noisy places make me very uncomfortable.

Another 2 month lockdown would do it. No gym or restaurants open. My kindle reader breaking.
