What did you watch this week dream chasers? (01/10-01/16)

“Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die today.”
– James Dean

“Life is full of beauty. Notice it. Notice the bumble bee, the small child, and the smiling faces. Smell the rain, and feel the wind. Live your life to the fullest potential, and fight for your dreams.”
– Ashley Smith

My week:

Le marais (“the marsh” 2002): Beautifully weird, excessively captivating and solidly acted. This is my 3rd movie from this Montreal born director and I loved each one of them. He’s really becoming one of my favourite. My rating: 8/10

E.T. The extra-terrestrial (1982 DVD): First time watching it entirely since my childhood. It’s a classic, it’s magic, it’s tragic and I’m nostalgic. So many memorable scenes and the score is glorious. My rating: 8.5/10

The bridges of Madison County (1995 TV): My quest to watch all theatrical releases of 95’s continues. Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep have a 4 days affair, turns into a romance, fall deeply in love and then cry about it. And That’s about it. If 2 hours of that sounds interesting to you then definitely watch this. I personally though it wasn’t bad at all. 6/10
(I created a unique rating system just for this movie check it out:
6/10: you are slightly romantic
7/10: you are romantic
8/10 you’re a Don Juan
9/10 you’re a Cyrano De Bergerac
10/10 you’re a Romeo)

The girl on the train (2016 TV): Solidly crafted thriller/mystery with a satisfying finale and a pretty beautiful female cast. (Huge Spoilers: Story about a dude who murders his pregnant mistress, beat up his ex-wife and tries to hide it all from his wife.) My rating: 7/10

Largo Winch (2008 TV): This French James Bond/M16-ish action/thriller was well effective and entertaining throughout. Buck the haters. My rating: 7/10

Just getting started (2017 TV): I honestly don’t see what is so bad about this movie. I don’t see anything great either and although it’s a rather forgettable flick, I kind of enjoyed it for the time it lasted. My rating: 5.5/10
5.5/10

Thanks.

And what did YOU watch?

I'm catching up to you on the Stonelkeeper game!

On TV, Space Jam (1996). I had never seen this and just learned that the alien team is called the MonStars! This film has lots of fans but I thought it was terrible. Its primary purpose was to worship Michael Jordan. The suspension of disbelief was impossible, since the MONSTARS could have stuffed Jordan and his cartoon teammates any time they wanted. It was nice to see the Looney Tune characters. Chuck Jones, who made them famous, hated this film, as did I. 3/10

Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979) - I can appreciate most zombie films, but not this one. 4/10.

The Manchurian Candidate (2004) - The original was more effective for its time of release, during the Cold War. I did not believe the premise of either film was possible though. It was nice to see Meryl Streep get shot dead. 6/10.

On cable TV's MeTV's Svengoolie show (with a comedic vampire introducing an old horror movie every week) - The Beast With Five Fingers (1946) Stars: Robert Alda (Alan's dad), Andrea King, Peter Lorre. Impressive visual effects, similar to The Thing on 1960s The Addams Family TV show. 6.66/10

In a theater:

News of the World (2020) - Tom Hanks' annual Oscar-bait film. For the helicopter shots, they were too far away and bland to merit a cinematography nomination, even though it's a western. I saw it on a large screen, but could barely tell that there was a herd of buffalo in the long shot. Most critics liked it, but I agreed with Slant Magazine's critic, who hated it at 3.8/10 (Yes, Dallas Texas is flat, with NO canyons! Poor character development.) https://www.slantmagazine.com/film/review-news-of-the-world-is-a-monotonously-preachy-parable-of-modern-life/

Just as the USA is releasing films that would not likely get played in theaters, if it were not for COVID-19, India is also releasing junk:

The White Tiger (2021) - An Indian film that is 85% in English, based on bestselling novel. Some might recognize Priyanka Chopra Jonas (TV's Quantico), who has a small part. Only 2 hours and 5 minutes, with no song and dance numbers typical of Indian films. But it is SLOW and repetitive and feels like it's over 3 hours. A cross between Parasite and Slumdog Millionaire (and I loved both of those films), but White Tiger SUCKS. 4/10

Alludu Adhurs (2021) - a young man falls for a girl and then ends up getting possessed by a female ghost. Truly awful, except for the eye candy who is the actress, Nabha Natesh. 3/10

OK, now we're talking!!! I want a report like that every week you hear student!? I like the way you rate your movies too. And I dont mean I like how they are low, I mean how you use 2-3 digits. I used to do that back then but was convinced to stop...

Space Jam: 8/10

The Manchurian Candidate: been on my list for way too long

And no, you won't catch up to me. Ever.

reply

Ahoy!

E.T. The extra-terrestrial (1982): I'd say 8.5, but only because it scared me as a child.
The girl on the train (2016) is on my list.

This week I watched:
Finished SE01 of The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
It was a nice surprise, considering I hadn't heard anything about this before. Some stereotypical characters, but very funny dialogues. 8/10

reply

Heard of it a few times but I haven’t decided to watch it yet. We never know.

reply

Barkskins (2020) Season 1 - BARKSKINS follows a disparate group of outcasts who must navigate brutal hardships, competing interests, and tangled loyalties at the crossroads of civilization- late 1600s New France. I was expecting more of a man vs nature series. Instead it was more about the characters and their relationships. I thought it strange that there was never a sec scene and they never mention where they were in New France and no mention of any of the Great Lakes. I will watch season 2. 7/10

Synchronic (2019) - From the same directors who brought you The Endless (2017). These guys like movies with time travel. The good part about Synchronic wad that I was able to understand what was going on. Not a bad premise. 6.5/10

Near Dark (1987) - A small-town farmer's son reluctantly joins a traveling group of vampires after he is bitten by a beautiful drifter. A fun vampire movie which is not to be taken seriously. I loved the bar scene. Paxton is hilarious. 7/10

reply

Big Near Dark fan here, and yes, the bar scene is the highlight of that film for me.

reply

the cowboy rides away

reply

You got that right!! George Strait baby! I can’t hear that song without thinking of that scene.

reply

Good contribution this week Dean

i've only seen e.t. from your list, which i weirdly watched for the first time in 2019. 4/5

my week:

the salesman (2017) 4.5 unlike lots of others, i don't really see this as being a dip in quality from farhadi's previous two films. i think it's every bit as good, and would be perfect if it wasn't quite so drawn out at the end.

the saddest music in the world (2003) 4 a step below my winnipeg & brand upon the brain as far as guy maddin films go, but still so god damned delightfully weird.

tapeworm (2019) 4 this is the most 'winnipeg' movie i've ever seen.

don't ask me why i love shambolic fuckery like this so much. i just do. it's not something that can be explained or defined. this is good to me. it may or may not be good to you. i'd definitely encourage you to try watching it to find out if it is.

possum (2018) 3.5 contains great things. enough of them that i wished i liked it more, but it does just lag a bit too much. i'm fine with it being confusing. as a depiction of someone's disintegrating mental state, it's very well done. it's almost a sister film to the great 90s indie 'clean, shaven.'

has some expertly presented, genuinely nightmarish images.

i might try giving this another watch to see if it comes together a little more effectively the second time around. it feels like there are tons of great things here, and maybe i need to work a bit more to provide the connective tissue.

the last house on the left (1972) 4 i can't really defend liking this as much as i do.

nightlight (2015) 2 mostly pretty dull found footage, though a few moments are effective - the cave & overhead lights scenes in particular.

not recommendable, but...if you just want something to throw on late in the evening while browsing twitter or whatever, go ahead & hit play. it has cute girls, though they're only on screen maybe...30% of the time?

brittany runs a marathon (2019) 3.5 mostly enjoyed it, though i felt it got a little too tony robbins-ish towards the end. good outweighs the bad, certainly.

gretel and hannsel (2020) 2.5 i don't want to plant my flag too firmly in either direction right now.

my initial thoughts are that i'm deeply disappointed yet think it's chock full of worthy things.

i've become a bit of a blackcoat's daughter obsessive. have watched it a silly amount of times, & i love lazing in its weird world. i didn't immediately love it, though. found it a bit of a slog my first go at it, as i recall, so i don't want to dismiss this out of hand. maybe i'll come to love this too.

but right now it feels just a bit too up its own bum and a bit too in love with its glacial austerity. i spent the last 40 minutes pleading with it to either get on with things already or just end.

open 24 hours (2018) 2.5 slightly subpar slasher/thriller. the lead is solid & sympathetic, i guess, but it takes a bit too long to get ramped up. has some solid violence and gore, though it could have used more.

lovers rock (2020) 4 great! very sweet & energetic & loaded with tons of great music. and short! make more short movies.

megan is missing (2011) 3.5 this is by far the most enthusiastic i think i've ever been about a film with a 1.4 rating.

execution is shoddy in places, granted, some of the acting is a bit sub-high school drama club. but it builds to a very stark & brutal ending. an ending that's a bit too drawn out. i'll also grant that. but i won't forget it i'm pretty sure.

i watch a lot of movies, and i forget most of them. i'm pretty sure i won't forget this one.

robocop 2 (1990) 3 the old man and ocp are the actual heroes of this movie. the mayor is the crusty government crony trying to hold back economic expansion.

this is pretty much worse than the original recipe in every single way. and it's mostly dour. the evil glee of the first one is mia for the most part.

but it's still passably entertaining.

red white and blue (2020) 3 errs on the side of being a little too heavy-handed imo. still a gripping story & all, but i can't help but feel it's a little diminished by being so didactic.

terminator dark fate (2019) 3.5 i enjoyed this much more streaming it tonight than i did when i caught it in the theatres. the first 1/2 hr or so of this truly cooks, and if it doesn't rise to anything like that level again, it's dependably entertaining.

it has its flaws - takes a dip when they get into that detention camp, and some of the action is far too glossy looking, but ... y'know, it's fine. good. and good things should be appreciated.

death wish (1974) 3.5 i don't think i've seen this before tonight. weird. if i had, it's completely fallen out of my head because it all mostly felt new to me.

it's not a pleasure on the level of 2 + 3 - it's just a bit too po-faced for me to love unreservedly - but i still dig its ugly, reactionary tone & message.

reply

the ladykillers (1955) 3 very pleasant and solidly amusing, but it never really made me truly lol.

slapstick comedy like this never seems to land with me, so take my opinion and throw it in the trash if you're so inclined.

the loved ones (2009) 3.5 pretty fun! would be a classic if it maintained its brutal energy all the way through, but i feel it kinda dissipated in the last third or so instead of building.

lola and her general attitude and demeanor kinda got my motor running, truth be told. i'd say she's approximately 10 billion times sexier than our guy's girl next door girlfriend.

the color wheel (20014) 4.5 a re-watch. i'd forgotten how funny this is. it has at least 4 scenes that made me genuinely lol. i didn't forget its ending, but even so it still kinda shocked me.

perry should make more comedies like this. i'd watch them.

black magic for white boys (2019) 3.5 i find tukel genuinely funny. he only seems able to hit one note in his performances, but it's a good note.

this could have been a little shorter, and holy cow does it leave you dangling and unresolved in many ways at the end, but it's another entry in tukel's caustic & i think very entertaining filmography. if he keeps making them, i'll keep watching them.

antiporno (2016) 4 y'know how, whenever a movie that's a little bit askew or messed up comes down the pike, about 30% of the lb reviews will say something like 'what the hell did i just watch?' or words to that effect?

this is one of those.

no idea what this was about. i'd imagine it's a statement on something - patriarchy or japanese porn, maybe. i have no idea. i'm not a deep thinker. i'll leave it to the smart people to tell me what this meant.

lots of fun though. colorful, exciting to look at, and pretty sexy at times.

the vast of night (2020) 3.5 i liked it a lot.

at a certain point, i kinda started wondering where this was going - are they ever going to get to the fireworks factor??? - but i never got impatient with it, and i think it did a great job of doling out its mysteries.

it's a modest film for the genre, but it's really well done.

this is martin bonner (2013) 5 this is something like the cinematic definition of an understated, lowkey masterwork. definitely at or near the top of my favourite indie films of the last 10 years.

swallow (2019) 4 i think this is about 85% of the way to being a great movie. if it got rid of one thing that i think didn't quite work, got rid of trying to create a 'she's like that because of this' explanation, this would be as terrific as 'safe,' to give an obvious comparison.

i'd still say it's really good. ends in a tantalizingly unresolved way that i found paradoxically satisfying!

star wars (1977) 4.5 i've heard it argued that the pace isn't great, and that kids these days find it too slow to get going. is that true? because i was having fun from the get go. it hit the ground running and never let up.

it's really good!

and i finished watching the first season of the boys. i initially really liked it, thought it felt like a complete breath of fresh air, but i did find myself getting a bit tired of the cynicism after a while.

i'll probably watch the 2nd season, but i'm definitely going to take a break from it for a bit.

I’m a huge robocop fan!! Hate the sequel! Ok, hate is a strong word but The young boy being the cruel villain was a bad decision and it’s mostly a mess. 5/10

Dark fate: 7.5/10

Star Wars: 8.5/10

reply

i'm a big fan of the original too. i'm probably gonna give it a rewatch on the weekend.

reply

No reason to have to defend The Last House on the Left (1972). It’s a great film. 👍

reply

ah, you're right. it's the kind of trash i never get tired of.

reply

My only complaint is the two cops with the twangy music.

reply

I love the end of Death Wish when Kersey points the finger gun at the punks. Perfect way to end it.

reply

They showed several Méliès movies on some arty farty channel, so I thought, "What the hell!". They were actually kinda cute!😆

That’s pretty awesome!! Nice!

Greetings Stonekeeper!!
When I type “greetings” in my phone these days it automatically pops up “Stonekeeper.” 😀 ET phone home. I haven’t seen that one in a long time but it does bring back good memories.

My week:

The Blood Spattered Bride (1972)
Newlyweds are haunted by a ghost wearing a wedding gown. This Spanish mystery that borders on soft porn just falls flat.

Sorceress (1982)
Twin sisters are as one in the sword and sorcery tale. Hilarious so bad it’s good Conan rip off here with laughs in every scene. Highly recommended for genre fans.

Wake in Fright (1971)
A teacher descends into drunken madness. Multiple viewings and I always think what a nice place it would be to visit if you could just stay away from Donald Pleasence. Great early 70’s Aussie film.

Boondock Saints (1999)
Two brothers turn into vigilantes to rid their city of crime. The accents and the nonstop over the top violence just did not do it for me. I know lots of people like this one, but I had to fight to finish it.

reply

You did make me laugh there. Nice! 😆

Boondock saints: good movie for me but it’s the only time I haven’t enjoyed a Willem Defoe performance. 7/10

reply

I think with the Boondock Saints you just weren't getting the symbology. 🤣🤣 The accents were horrible, but I do really enjoy it. The sequel though, not so much.

reply

E.T. 8/10
The Girl on the Train 6.5/10 - I know I would have liked this better if I hadn't read the book first

The only thing I watched this week was Time Bandits (1981). I hadn't watched it since I was a kid and I'd forgotten most of it. The ending still creeped me out, but I really enjoyed it. 7.5/10

reply

Time Bandits: Saw it for the first times about 5 years ago and LOVED it. 8.5/10

reply

I remember Time Bandits being such a weird movie. I need to watch it again.
