What did you watch this week my homies? (01/03-01/09)

We now have a curfer at 8Pm for the next 1 month so that means... more time to watch movies!!!

My week:

Tin cup (1996 TV): I love golf and my wife loves romcom. The last movie we saw together was A perfect world. This movie just happen to play on the cable so we had to watch it and we enjoyed it. I wanted to see it since a few years and I knew I wouldn’t be disappointed. Plus, his favorite weapon was his iron 7 and that’s my favourite too! My rating: 7/10

Doctor Sleep (2019 DVD): I know, this movie is connected to The shining, I’m not stupid but, I saw connections with another movie also; Trainspotting! McGregor dealing with a disgusting toilet with a ceiling camera view, a dead baby nightmare and him getting wasted much. Heck, he even worked on a train! Anywho, I would lie if I’d say that I was not captivated by the story and I loved the cinematography. I couldn’t finish it in one session and the next evening I was excited to put it back on so that’s a very good sign. This movie is actually frickin bonkers guy. There’s a few important parts that barely made any sense but like I said, this movie is psycho and I loved it. I’ll even go as far as to say it would make a good series. MOVIE BREAKDOWN:
Story: 8/10
Cinematography: 9/10
Direction: 8.5/10
Acting: 8/10
Score: 8/10
Overall: 8/10

Astérix chez les Bretons (“Asterix in Britain”1986 TV): Every year during the holiday season, the Quebec channel plays those Asterix movies and every year the Quebec people watch them. I ain’t no exception. This movie is infinitely watchable, I giggled about 88 times and laughed over 15 times in 80 minutes. I think every good human being on earth should have the satisfaction of watching this at least once so here is the IMDb page: https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0090667/ and here is the movie on YouTube: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=FTgjgyuivfk.
It’s in french but maybe there’s one with subtitles.
Oh and here is my rating: 10/10

Shortbus (DVD): Right of the first seconds we are having to deal with explicit sex, which is an issue already and mainly homosexual scenes so it was even harder for me to watch. Not even 15 minutes in, a guy licks his own sick and has an orgasm in his own mouth. The place where I draw the line is about 3 corner before that street but you know what, I ffwed and pulled through because of all the critics and reviews I read. Finally, I did come across a few rather poorly written characters who had semi-interesting conversations. The best thing about this movie was the soundtrack since I spent about 50% of the time not watching. My rating: 3/10

Jojo Rabbit - watched on the plane home from Dubai - a bit strange, but quite funny - 7/10.

reply

Yep, it’s a good movie. 7.5/10

Nothing from your list, and no feature film this week, but

I started: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (TV Series 2015–2019). I think I'm 5 eps in SE01, and it's hilarious! It seemed like girly stuff, but I'm honestly enjoying it. Will rate it when I'm through.

reply

Alright. Might check it out with the wife eventually

reply

Shouldn't you have posted this yesterday? Well, I will forgive you this once, but don't let it happen again!

I've seen Tin Cup once when it first came out, but I don't remember much about it and never rated it anywhere.
Doctor Sleep 8/10
Asterix in Britain sounds like cute fun, so maybe I will check it out.
Shortbus sounds really nasty, so I'm not interested in that.

What I watched:
Over the Moon (2020) 7/10
Only Two Can Play (1962) 7/10
The Canterville Ghost (1944) 8/10
The Mouse That Roared (1959) 6/10
Matilda (1996) 7/10
The Blood on Satan’s Claw (1971) 5/10
Shirley (2020) 5/10
Taking a Shot at Love (2021) 7/10
The Ghost of Peter Sellers (2018) 7/10
House of Wax (1953) 7/10

So, I watched films from 7 different decades (the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 90s, 2000s, and 2020s). I'm on vacation this week so I will likely watch even more movies.

reply

Well maybe if you Took the time to actually ask me why I am late you would not be so hard on me but now I’m just gonna make you look like a fool because hear this:

Yesterday I took an afternoon nap and when I woke up I was in an alternate reality. everything around me was the same but I could feel that it wasn’t my usual dimension. Then my wife tried to seduce me, I kicked her away and I had to take another nap to escape this b******t. Now I’m back...

I think.

reply

The lesson for you is to never take naps.

reply

And by the way, none of those movies you’ve listed actually exist except for Matilda so I don’t know what you were doing all this time in front of the TV...

reply

They exist in the hearts and minds of true cinephiles. If you are not aware of their existence, then you are not as cool as me.

Tin Cup 6/10
Doctor Sleep 8/10

I don't think I commented last week, so this is the last 2 weeks for me.

Last week

Population 436 (2006) 6.5/10 - Not a new premise, and it did remind me a bit of the lottery, but it wasn't bad. I did enjoy it, and it was nice to see it was filmed in Manitoba.

Raw Deal (1986) 4/10 - I really didn't like this one. I thought I'd seen it before, but if I had I didn't remember it. There was just so much not to like. It was such a great period for 80s Arnie action films and this was not one of them.

Død snø 2 (2014) 5/10 - I know I am in the minority here, but I prefer the original to this one. I rewatched the first one a while ago and thought I would rewatch this to see if I liked it better this time around. The first one, while still a comedy, actually tried to have a scary atmosphere. This was all humour. Not that it's a bad thing, I just wanted a bit more "scare".

Leviathan (1989) 6.5/10 I always combine this and Deep Star Six in my head, and this one isn't bad. Essentially, it's Aliens and The Thing underwater. Not bad for an inferior copy.

reply

Hmmm, I feel like I must have seen Raw Deal also, but I just don’t remember anything about it.

reply

You aren't missing anything.

This week was mostly re-watches

Curse of the Blair Witch (1999) 5.5/10 Someone mentioned this recently so I thought I'd give it another watch. I liked it when I first saw it, but now, not so much. I still think it was a brilliant piece of marketing.

Terror on the 40th Floor (1974) 3/10 I did make it through the whole thing, but just barely. Some made for tv 70s disaster movies are worth watching, this isn't one of them.

Death to 2020 (2020) 5/10 Missed the mark for me. Maybe I just don't like comedy at all anymore. I guess I just prefer when Charlie Booker makes British shows.

Mother's Day (2010) 6/10 Another re-watch. This was better than I remembered it. Rebecca De Mornay did make it worth the watch.

The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014) 5.5/10 Liked this one much better the first time around. Not bad for a docustyle horror movie, and I really did like the dementia aspect of it.

Dark City (1998) 9/10 I love this movie. I love the noir aspects, and I thought it is interesting Sci-fi. I love the cast, I love the story. Pretty much I love everything about this movie.

Rumble Fish (1983) 6.5/10 I would probably rate this higher, but Matt Dillon irritates me to no end. I don't know why. I think the movie overall is pretty decent. It's like an art house outsiders which I think is a little more style than substance. Again, I think it's just Matt Dillon why I don't like it as much.

reply

Dark city: 8/10
I saw Outsiders and got Rumble fish on DVD

reply

Hummm, I don’t think I ever saw raw deal. Like you said, I guess I haven’t missed much

reply

Greetings Stonekeeper!!

I’m afraid to even look up Shortbus so I’ll take your word for it. 😆

My short week Week:

Hair (1979)
A guy about to enlist in the army befriends a group of hippies during Vietnam. Im not much on musicals but this really wasn’t that bad. It was nice spotting many familiar faces in small roles.

The Red Queen Kills Seven Times (1972)
Murders occur after two sisters inherit a castle. This is one of those Gialli that check all the boxes but is a bit lackluster. In the end, anything with Barbara Bouchet in it is worth watching to me.

reply

It was nice spotting many familiar faces in small roles.

I enjoy this aspect of watching older movies.

reply

I hate musicals but would definitely watch Hair

"(12/03-12/09)" Does 12 mean January in Canadian?
Does the Canadian calendar go backwards? Or did you get in a time machine, Stoney?

reply

I had a rough day sorry

ahoy, sk.

dr sleep 3.5 - i liked it a lot more on a 2nd watch, though i still don't care for it as much as most other flanagan films. i found it a little too digital looking, maybe? clever insight you made regarding trainspotting. sharp mind you have there!

shortbus 3 - i would run away screaming from all of those people.

my week:

cool hand luke (1967) 3 writing reviews of old movies just about everyone has seen is pretty stupid, i guess.

all i can say is that, while this has some great moments & justifiably famous dialogue, i didn't enjoy most of it very much.

all about nina (2018) 1.5 i watched this some time back and thought very highly of it, according to my prior letterboxd review.

i thought it was atrocious tonight.

i bet being a comedian is incredibly hard. not many could do it.

& i don't think winstead is passable as a comedian.

the ending was a disaster to me.

dude bro party massacre (2015) 5 i would be happier if more movies were like this and fewer were like tokyo story

silent night deadly night 5 (1991) 3 not quite as fun as part 4, but surprisingly entertaining.

to die for (1995) 4 if she put on some goth makeup and some punky clothes, i would do anything nicole kidman told me to.

never let go (1960) 3 not terribly interesting crime thriller. interesting to see peter sellers playing a heavy, i guess, but nothing else about it is very distinctive. if you're thinking of watching it, i'd say give it a pass.

the blood on satan's claw (1971) 3.5 a bit slow in the early going, and a touch too darkly lit in spots for my liking, but stick with it, cuz this is a very nicely done period horror. never gets too wild, and there's minimal gore and scares, but it's solidly entertaining & nicely made.

coven (2020) 2.5 goofy fun. cute girls who wear skimpy revealing clothes, a bit of very softcore lesbian sex, and some silly witchcraft that will make you feel embarrassed for the actors.

i was entertained, and even made a bit horny in a few places. good enough for me.

holiday (1938) 3 cary grant/katherine hepbrun romcom. it's very cute & all, but this is the kind of good natured movie about people and their feelings that just doesn't align with my preferences.

silent night (2012) 2 i don't have any great reverence for the original films, but at least they had a trashy glee & sense of fun. this is very much a non-funny, fairly generic horror movie remake. it's not terrible, and i watched it and never wanted to turn it off. but it's very bland and will probably fall out of my head as quickly as it entered, i expect.

miller's crossing (1990) 2 am i in a pissy mood or something? stressed from work? dismayed by the crushing morosity of daily life? i don't seem to be enjoying any of the movies i'm watching these days. and i usually like everything. i'm easy to please.

this is my 2nd crack at this, and i once again found it to be a dreary bore. i couldn't understand 60% of what byrne said. i didn't know why anyone was doing anything. i didn't know who these people were and why they were beating byrne up every 20 minutes or so.

i love the coens. i think they may have made more great movies than anyone else in the last 40 years. this is my least favourite coens film.

2 stars for the amusement i got out of seeing people beat the shit out of byrne 4 or 5 times.

village of the damned (1960) 3.5 kids are bad news.
very good. like an extended above average twilight zone episode.

triangle (2009) 3.5 i don't know why melissa george does all the things she does in this movie.

i've watched it a bunch of times, & i don't really think her actions make sense.

but i have a very, very good time every time i hit play on it, which is much more important.

movies don't have to make sense to be good.

tony conrad: dreaminimalist (2008) short doc on minimalist/noise musician tony conrad.

i don't know a whole lot about conrad, but i do know he has performed with the messy, crazy krautrockers faust, so i always assume he was a dour, scary, sinister guy.

not at all. he's a completely good-natured goofball.

i wish this had more of his music. but it's a fun little sketch of him as a person.

santa the fascist years (2008) 3 short animated film. you can do a lot in 4 minutes.
i wish people who thought you need 150 minutes to tell a complete story would learn something from things like this.

king of the hill (1993) 3 so far i'm not liking this too much.

but that car scene at the 45m mark gave me huge anxiety in a sort of pleasing manner.

i should have looked into what this was about before hitting play. i don't like watching movies about kids in peril or having a sad time of it.

it's perfectly fine, but it made me feel really bad, which is something i prefer to avoid. films like this always bum me out. this was no exception.

elevator to the gallows (1958) 4 very cool french thriller that i was completely unaware of until today. can't quite unreservedly praise it, cuz it kinda tapers off in a way i found a touch unsatisfying, & doesn't quite give me the satisfying mental crunch i thought it was building towards. but it's a very slick, cool little film and absolutely worth your time if you're a pleeb like me who wasn't clued into it.

alien (1979) 4.5 i've heard it said over the years that this movie takes too long to get going.

nuts to that. this is something like the pinnacle of achievement as far as building tension in a horror film goes imo.

the only thing i don't like about this now is the ash surprise. it feels like a distraction that slightly takes away from the ratcheting up of anxiety the rest of the movie does so expertly.

hellraiser 3: hell on earth (1992) i've never had any great love for the first two hellraiser films. i like them enough, but i've always felt that they were making a bit too much of an effort for something close to seriousness.

this is the kind of nonsense trash i love. it's filled with foxy girls & lots of fun, silly gore effects, and it moves along at a rat-a-tat pace. it's not good, but it's absolutely awesome, and i loved every second of it.

hellraiser: bloodline (1996) 1.5 it may sound kinda dumb to say that i'm disappointed in a hellraiser sequel.

but i thought pt 3 was an absolute blast. the best kind of silly, fun, cheap early 90s horror.

so i was primed for more of the same. & when i heard that it had some future-ish sci-fi elements, i was primed for a very good time.

and instead it's a dreary bore. murky & bland & ugly to look at.

and i finished watching the netflix series 'the haunting of bly manor' this past weekend.

my least favourite flanagan.
it still has the things that make his movies good. he truly has a talent for taking old horror elements that ought to feel tired & old - ghosts, hauntings, things in the dark - & making them feel fresh & interesting. the best moments here do that.

but...

i hated the lead. i wanted her to go away and wanted to watch anyone else besides her the whole time she was on the screen. i wanted her to die in the last episode. i didn't want her to be happy. the last episode, when things were supposed to be triumphant, made me sick, because i didn't want this dreary, nothing person to be happy & feel good.

& the story lacked a complete, interesting arc. i plowed through hill house. couldn't wait to watch the next episode. i would forgo doing other things to watch two, three episodes in a row. here, i felt nothing other than a dutiful need to hit play again to get this dreary thing over with.

i thought hill house ended somewhat weakly, but i was still left with a satisfied feeling of having experienced a complete story told very well.

here in the final episode, i was completely indifferent, pining for it to be over, and hating each and every person and their dreary monologues and the droning voice-over.

all in all...not too good.

Dude bro party massacre: 6/10
To die for: 7.5/10
I am a fan of the Coen brothers but Miller Crossing is one of the few I haven’t seen from them...we all know deep down that there’s a reason.
Alien 8/10

I’m pretty sure we equally love Flanagan and I did watch part of the first episode when it came out but I’m not sure when I’ll get to watch the rest

A slow week

Nomadland 2020 = a very minimalist movie. some people will love this and others like me will say that not much happens. 6.5/10

A Perfect World (1993) - costner's best performance. enjoyable all around. a darker movie than i remembered. 7.5/10

Nice

A perfect world: A perfect movie 10/10
