Why can’t we make tires that last forever?

I went to a fundraising event for UNICEF a few years ago and they were demonstrating these new soccer balls that they were giving to street children in poverty stricken areas that you could stab with a knife and it would go all the way through and come out and the ball was still bouncy and perfect. I think it was made out of the same material that Crocs are. They invented it because with old stocker balls the inside bag would burst and they would have to play with a flat soccer ball.

Does anyone have a clue why we couldn’t have car tires made out of that stuff so we’d never get a flat tire again?

reply

Probably because tires are pretty cheap,$50-100 each, flats happen but are uncommon in everyday life.

You would have to research a better tire, which costs money to do, and you would have to recoup these costs by charging more for the tire.

If tires costs $200+ each, this might happen.

But tire manufacturing has become so efficient and tire prices so reasonable, that research into a advanced tire would not be profitable.

As another poster said, they do have runflat tires, but aren't a best seller.

A cant beleive i have to explain this:
Getting punctures is not what makes tires wear out.
Its the constant friction between the rubber and the road wearing the tire away.
The same principle also applies to your magic unicef football , it will not last forever.

reply

You DON’T have to explain it. I never said or thought that getting a puncture was the same as wearing a tire out. Jesus, could you be a bigger douche? What the fuck is wrong with you that you have to be a jerk instead of being a fellow curious and wonder seeking human?

sorry i was confused by your title:
"Why can’t we make tires that last forever?"

That does sound a little like a tire that doesent wear out no?
I've had tires that have never had a puncture , but havent lasted long.
I actually made another reply elsewhere , much more positive when i realized what you were talking about.

Now thats a good question , unlike the title of your OP, which is completely misleading
like others have said , makes for a shitty ride.
We cant seem to develop a material to go inside tyres thats as good as air.

I always wondered why they don't have some sort of artificial enamel that you coat your teeth with every few years and will never get cavities, but I guess that would put too many dentists out of work.

reply

Wow! I’ve never thought about that before! I wonder what enamel they could make that would be non toxic and how would it stick to your teeth? Really great idea.

reply

It seems so sensible and logical that I'm sure I'm not the first person to think of it. Maybe it's kept in the government vaults with all the cancer cures and alien bodies.

reply

All of the tire Companies would lose too much money if there was a tire that would last forever. They would never let that happen.

tyres last ages. grip is overrated.

reply

I guess nothing grips better than a tyre thread.

reply

Because not enough people use condoms. You know that 365 used condoms are melted and turned into Goodyear tires.

reply

So, I got cum soaking tires.
