Your Favorite Movies Under 90 Minutes?

I have to double-check some things before I reply.

There were a lot of decent 75 minute movies in the 30/40s, a lot of ones with Cagney, Bogart, Raft, etc.. But I'm looking for great, not just "good". Plus, many of those movies were very similar. Star power, short story with great pace (hence, some being barely over an hour) and probably making good money, but many felt factory-made.

I just remembered one... "Pickpocket" by Robert Bresson. It's a great movie, a 9/10

these are the films on my top 100 that clock in under 90 minutes.

i almost always prefer shorter films.
i just don't have the patience for epics.
it's better to say something quickly than to take a long time to do it.
it's better to tell a simple story with a few characters and a basic streamlined plot than to go on and on and on.
it's better to do something quickly than to do it slowly.
keep it short.
in all aspects of life.
i've read far too many long books that should have been much shorter.
or books that should have been magazine articles.
or 10k word pieces that should have been half that length.

brevity is a gift to the world. bequeath that gift to all n 2021.

Hondo, Tall in the Saddle, The Virginian 1946, Amazon Women on the Moon, Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. Top Secret and Johnny Dangerously just missed the cut at 90 minutes.

reply

"Hondo" is an underrated movie.. The first 15 minutes basically tell the story of the world. Fine writing.

reply

Hondo is where John Wayne first met James Arness who he later recommended for the role of Matt Dillon. It also featured one of my favorite heavies in Leo Gordon who also wrote books and screenplays. Director Don Siegel once said Gordon was the scariest guy he ever met.

reply

Yeah he has one of those faces that read "Don't fuck with me"

Chopping Mall (77 minutes)
