famous directors you have yet to discover?

Which famous filmmakers have you yet to discover?

It doesn't have to be the kinda director you learn about in film school either. Even someone like Satoshi Kon or Mira Nair (two directors whose work I've only just begun watching) counts.

Here's mine:

Akira Kurosawa
Ingmar Bergman
Jean-Luc Godard
Fritz Lang
Michael Powell/Emeric Pressburger
Charlie Chaplin
Yasujiro Ozu
John Cassavettes
John Ford
David Lean

What's yours?

reply

Sergej Eisenstein
Zbigniew Rybczynski
Federico Fellini

If I haven't discovered them, why would I know their names to list here??

reply

The word "discover" in this case, means having seen at least one of their films. Hope that wasn't too much of a head scratcher for you, Einstein.

Why so nasty?? I asked a logical question. Wow. Who's the real idiot here?

How was anyone supposed to know this?

You stole my thunder, Allison!

I honestly can't think of any famous directors that I haven't seen any films by.

reply

There has to be, you've just gotta think hard and look at world cinema as a whole.

reply

Woody Allen and Roman Polanski.

I've seen Chinatown and maybe half of a Woody Allen movie, don't plan to watch anymore.

reply

Well, if you've seen one then I'd say you've taken your first step in discovering them. Though, I'd usually wait till I see at least one or two more films from a particular director before completely riding them off. Just out of curiosity, which Woody Allen film did you try to watch?

reply

Over the years I've seen some of Sleeper and some of Casino Royale, and possibly a little of What's New Pussycat.

The only Woody Allen film I'd want to see is Play It Again, Sam but that's because I'm a Bogart fan.
