Too cold

reply

Yonkers is just as cold.

reply

Nuh-uh
And no rampaging Moose!

reply

To be honest, I've never seen a moose.

reply

Surely you've narrowly escaped at least one maple syrup slide though๐Ÿ˜ƒ

reply

I have seen moose. They are gorgeous animals. I do think it's funny that our road signs have made international news.

reply

I also think moose are beautiful animals. I saw the thing that they like the wintery salt residue on cars. I understand one should keep one's distance, they can be dangerous, but occasionally one might be friendly -

We sometimes get some wildlife that wander into the neighbourhood. We had a family of moose who decided they liked the dog park and golf course near my house. They had to be removed for everyone's safety. Better moose than bison though.

same for china.

reply

Either they could not reach enough people to ask, or in the case of China they would have been targeted as subversives for favoring any country over China.

reply

New Zealand or Australia for me sport, I'd be proper whingeing pom!

reply

Why Canada? I wonder if they all think climate change will make it a temperate climate region in years ahead.

I would have said a small city in France (not Paris) for the culture, lifestyle and food but they have been having terrible heat in summer and floods in recent years.

reply

Probably because it has all the upsides of living in a first-world country without the downside of being in the evil, hegemonic, colonialist, racist, misogynist, homophobic, transphobic, Islamophobic USA.

reply

We got all of that here, just to a much lesser extent. Although there are Canadians that try to convince other Canadians it's worse.

reply

Canada has that stuff too. It just benefits from living in the shadow of a country that's much bigger (in terms of population) and louder about it. Canada has a very ugly history of racism and oppression of its indigenous population that continues up to the present. Indigenous people in Canada are poorer than the general population, disproportionately the victims of crime and police brutality, and Canadian police rarely bother to investigate disappearances of indigenous people. Canada took in a huge number of Nazis after World War II, particularly Ukrainian Nazis (which it deemed "refugees from communism", a sick joke), which has left an ugly mark on Canadian politics up to the present. For example, Canada's current deputy prime minister is the granddaughter of a notorious Ukrainian Nazi and she considers him a "freedom fighter". Up until Trudeau became prime minister, Canada was one of a handful of countries (mostly just the US and Ukraine) which voted each year to oppose a UN resolution condemning the glorification of Nazism. Now Canada abstains each year (most recently just days ago), which isn't much better, leaving the US and Ukraine as the only countries that vote against. Probably when Canada gets another prime minister they'll go back to voting against it again. Canadian companies participate heavily in the exploitation and looting of the global south, and Canada has been involved in at least one coup in Haiti to overthrow a progressive Haitian government and keep Haitian workers' wages down. Canada is one of the biggest supporters of Israel's racist colonial occupation of Palestine. Canada sells bombs to Saudi Arabia to kill the people of Yemen with, making Canada complicit in some of the most atrocious crimes against humanity so far this century.

I've never liked the myth of Canada being this happy utopia of kindness. This isn't to say Canadians are all bad people, but Canada as a political entity is just a smaller, less powerful version of the US.

reply

Canada spends billions on its indigenous population. They are poorer because they live in isolated areas where they lack basic services and try to live off the land which is impossible to do. The indigenous population should move to areas around Canada's largest cities (like immigrants do) and become part of the Canadian mosaic.

Communism had no refugees or victims?? Eastern Europe was a mess after WW2 and I am sure a few fascists were allowed into Canada. They had no influence or effect on Canadian life or government policy. I am not a big fan of Chrystia Freeland but I don't think she should pay for the sins of her grandfather. A country built on immigration will sometimes make mistakes. What country are you from??

Haiti - another country we seed billions to every year. It doesn't seem to matter who is in power there, the country is a mess and Canada more than does it part to try and make it better.

Israel is a democracy where Arabs have the right to vote and serve in the Knesset. Other Arab countries are signing diplomatic and trade agreements with Israel as they have had enough of the Palestinians and their ongoing victimhood. The Palestinians are their own worst enemy.

Iran is causing most of the trouble in Yemen and most of the Middle East for that matter.

The world could use a few more Canadas in my opinion. Our motto should be - Come here and live, if not, we will send you money.

If Trump had won, I would have taken steps to try to move to Canada.

And I suppose it's my frustrated wanderlust at work, but lately I've had a strong desire to chuck it all and move to Australia, sight unseen. I'v never even been there, but the idea of exploring a whole new world, where everything is different but the languate and there's a whole new nation and it's wildlife to explore, seems like the coolest thing possible! Gawd, I miss travel...

reply

You should move to Australia. Or Canada. Both are much better than the United States.

reply

How much time have you spent in both?

reply

Lol

reply

Years. You should move. Awesome countries.

reply

You're an otter. Can't you just swim?

reply

Sure, otters can swim!

But they don't have any special abilities when it comes to driving on snow or ice. That's something I'd rather avoid, but there's always British Columbia.

reply

Canada-Yes, absolutely.
Australia-No, almost everything there will kill you. You are better off in New Zealand.

reply

I don't know anybody and have never met anybody who knows someone who has died from any form of wildlife in Australia.

reply

That is because they are aware that Australia has the deadliest and most dangerous animals in the world and they take every possible precaution, which is why the death rate due to wildlife is low. ๐Ÿ

reply

So where is the death due to wildlife high?

reply

I have no idea, but if I had to guess, it would be India.

reply

I can't think of any precautions that I take, I'm still alive.

reply

Of course you are, I would not image that Australia is exactly like "Snake Island" where there is a venomous snake or poisonous animal every 3 feet in any direction and your survival rate would be 3% at best.

reply

Becoming a Canadian citizen is a complicated process. You don't just cross the border and fill out an application. Plus the border is currently closed to non-essential traffic, due to COVID-19.

reply

I guess this means most of the people who come across our southern border are just passing through to Canada. ๐Ÿ˜€

reply

If they are illegals a lot of us evil Americans would happily give them a lift there๐Ÿ˜‰

"The map has been drawn up by financial services provider Remitly, which looked at search data from Google for 100 countries. It says it created a ranking by looking at average monthly search volumes for phrases commonly associated with a move abroad and the most-searched-for locations within the 100 countries."

This does not sound very scientific or realistic.

Mexico can provide FREE air transport directly to Canada, for all the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants regularly trying to pour into the southern USA.

reply

> This does not sound very scientific or realistic.

I find it dubious too, for a number of reasons, and I've done scientific research. One of my reasons is that a person might well explore via web surfing the idea of relocating without having any intention of doing so, just as a person might visit web sites devoted to the history of the Mafia without having any intention of joining La Cosa Nostra.

Ever heard of this bunch? -- http://www.greatloop.org It's possible to circle the entire Eastern USA by water. The "circle" (simplified for brevity) is from Chicago down to the Gulf of Mexico, around Florida up to New York, west on the Erie Canal and some rivers to the Great Lakes, then to Chicago. There are people who buy small boats and do it. Apparently it takes about a year. And it looks like it costs several hundred thousand dollars. The people who do it seem to be retirees who've done well for themselves and are still young enough to enjoy it.

I stumbled on that a few days ago. Then while Googling for more information I stumbled on marinetraffic.com -- live tracking of ships all over the world. Someone watching my last few days of Internet activity would be convinced I was preparing to make the trip and was researching maritime activity on the Great Lakes in preparation. Of course, I'm not; I just got fascinated with the idea.

A lot of Brits move to Australia, especially Western Australia.

Interesting people have chosen Japan, does Japan even let people emigrate there?
