Site improvement request

Why not make it so trending doesn't show users you've blocked?

All you would have to do to get Trump's ugly mug off your screen would be to ignore the posters who post there!

Win/win!

reply

you would have a lot of people on ignore. more than brux or r kane.

reply

The site is rudderless as far as I can tell and although I agree lots of improvements would be nice it won't happen.

For example members are not supposed to post political discussions on Trump's page yet lots of people do. If the Mods were doing their jobs they would stop that but as we have discovered, the mods here are useless.

So it doesn't even require a site "improvement" your request just requires the Mods to do their jobs.

reply

There are not many Mods and they are unpaid so this isn't a full time job with benefits for them

The very few of them seem to be reasonable and are probably somewhat overwhelmed (ie not their fault)

reply

I don't buy it. I think they are useless and apply the rules as it suits them.

reply

Fair enough, let's just agree to disagree

reply

That's cool I am not wanting to fight you or anyone but lets put it this way, why is this thread allowed to exist in the Gen Pop when it belongs in politics? https://moviechat.org/general/General-Discussion/5fa8c58e1e159e1e3c6f9bec/People-of-colour-who-choose-white-spouses-to-white-wash-their-offspring?page=1

Have the Mods not seen it? Has no one reported it?

reply

This has been discussed on the board and in PMs

It is an unneeded post to be sure, good on the users for registering their dislike of it

As to why it's still up I couldn't say but as questionable as it comes off the post does avoid obvious slurs

reply

Is it just me or does Into Night remind you of MovieBuff224?

reply

Not for me
I dig MovieBuff, the guy's a gas😂

reply

It's a trash post but I don't know if it really is a political topic either, if it belongs anywhere.

reply

It's kind of political in the sense that it is about race which tends to lead to politics. It's mostly flaming though really.

There was a thread recently about political agendas in TV shows and films and many thought it also belonged in politics. I think that is different as it was also about movies/TV so hard not to mention politics when it appears in so much now. Kind of a fine line I guess.

reply

I think the mods do pretty well. I haven’t needed much but anything I’ve reported was dealt with and vice versa. I never got a hard time about mouthing off but I’m not that big of a trouble maker, lol.

I just don’t see why the mods aren’t paid anything. I mean, the site makes money on ads, right?

reply

I use this site from my computer...So I just bookmark General Discussion, bypassing everything else.

reply

In the past has anyone requested an improvement or modification to the MC forums and it actually been done?

reply

unfortunately not

reply

I think they made some improvements that we were harping on, like making links live automatically without having to format them.

reply

I think someone who doesn't program and doesn't really understand how the site works owns this site. There are lots and lots of ways to improve this site.

> Why not make it so trending doesn't show users you've blocked?

Probably wouldn't be feasible. As it stands now, "Trending" just shows where the most recent posts have been made. Nothing complex about that. What you're suggesting would require that the MC server check the most recent posters' IDs against your ignore list and reconstruct the Trending list based on that ... and to do that every time you load that page (after all, you might have just added or removed someone from your ignore list five seconds ago) ... and to also do that for every other user who loads the Trending panel, every time they load it. Quite a CPU load, probably.

And for what? I take it you don't like Donald Trump. Fine. But you don't have to look at his discussion page. I don't look at any politician's page here because political "discussions" among the general public on the Internet are almost always worthless. But you really can't stand to see the man's picture every once in a while?

reply

Well put Schmidt
It's not hard at all to just glance past nonsense we're not interested in

reply

> Well put Schmidt

Thanks. You know, now that I think about it, there is a much easier way to accomplish what the OP wants. In addition to allowing users to ignore other users, how about a feature which enables users to ignore topics? For example, the OP could go to the Donald Trump page, click on an
"Ignore topic" link there, then never see it on the Trending panel. That wouldn't require the CPU intensive rigmarole I described earlier, it would just check the topic against the user's ignore list in the same way individual posts are checked against viewers' ignore lists.

That might have some value beyond just avoiding things one personally finds irritating. Suppose there's a very popular new movie which lots of people are talking about. The Trending panel is dominated by that movie's page, the pages of the director and all the major actors, and so on. And let's say I've seen the movie, didn't particular care for it, and have no interest in talking about it. All that stuff on the Trending panel would be getting in the way of my seeing other things I might be interested in.

I'm not arguing that such a change should be made. I'm fine with the system the way it is. But if enough other users like the idea, maybe MC should consider it.

reply

Cool idea but a lot of these wish list functions seem like 'please make the bad people go away!' stuff to me

We're here to bullshit about things, I never even understood the need for an 'ignore' option and I don't enjoy everyone here
