MovieChat Weekly

I started with the subject line "Current Forum News + What Happened to the Classic Movie Fans?" but then decided against it... Did they leave? Were they banned? Or does all the miscellaneous stuff discourage them from posting about movies (or even music, and other artistic endeavors)?

Maybe this could be a weekly thing I do... Asking people for laments, what they would like to see more, such as recommendations, lists, full movie links, history of film, theory, trends (e.g. Neo-Realism, New Wave, etc), reviews, etc..... Shit, reminds me of a post about Movie Podcasts, which I never got back to, not even sure if it was here (I post on almost a dozen sites) and I have a tendency not to look past the first page, assuming I've already read it.. Maybe I should go and see if I can allow 50 threads on each page - weird quirk of mine, I guess.

It would be nice to hear from those who aren't posting much. After all, after 2-3 years, people do discover movies and/or directors, (hopefully thanks to recommendation threads) and it would be cool for those who do see something great to share it with the rest of us.

Then again, I'm guessing some are going through hell with this pandemic, and are more worried about rent than having the internet. Hope they are all well, and know they are missed.

I like to post director/actor interviews, but they seem to be the only threads that get no replies, so I stopped doing so.

Not a criticism, but if you ever get the chance, go back a year or so and just compare - just to see the changes. I also wonder if current events change the subject matter, but then again, politics is verboten (which I think is a good thing) on the General Discussion board..

The threads I remember from the last 48 hours
-Spaghetti
-Jackie Chan saying the n-word
-Prostitution
-I don't care about humans
-Laundry
-Taking life with a grain of salt
-Swimming pools
-Burning calories

Besides the post I created, I can't think of any movie threads, although I know there are a few..

What do you think are the reasons forums change? Someone I used to talk to said she seemed to be too old for this site, which is unfortunate, as its good to have a cross-section from all demographics. Not to mention she loved movies and would always recommend movies to others.

Do you have other questions, but not wanting to start a new thread? Do you worry about creating too many threads? Do you worry about the content, feeling it might be out of place, and move on to something else? Do you peruse categories besides "General Discussion" (I don't).. Do you spend more or less time on here in 2020?

I wish we had statistics.. For example, how many new people we accumulate each week vs. how many we lose, but also figures for threads/day, and a sub-category of interest (replies/thread).

I don't expect too much in the way of movie content in the "General Discussion" board. Almost anything goes here and that is fine with me. I mostly post in specific movie or tv boards. I check out General for kicks. Sometimes its movie related. If not, it's fine. People interacting on this site is good.

I actually think it is weird when someone starts a topic about a certain movie in General instead of the board for the movie itself.

Don't stop making your posts. I always enjoy them. I may not have time to pursue all of your recommendations but I do have some written down. I, too, would love to see stats on site growth, etc.

reply

Thank you. I appreciate that.

I think everyone uses General Discussion because of the traffic. I just went to "Film General" and there hasn't been a peep in 3 days.

Whoever came up with the spaghetti thread sounds like a genius!

reply

Totally overrated...

I would definitely like to see more film related topics, things like lists, recommendations, posts about specific genres or trends in film, posts about awards, movie purchases, streaming sites, etc. I think forums change for a few different reasons: the people, the culture, current events, etc. I agree that it would be interesting if we had stats about members and threads.

Also: The more people that join this site, the more % we have of anything/everything including bad actors and good. It should follow that there will be more of all kinds of threads. "should"

I love all the movie topics that come up and especially the list of user’s favorite films. There are several users here that I frequently watch films that they recommend or if they post list I might watch titles I haven’t seen. I wish there were more move themed post in general discussion, for that matter. I keep a running list of everything I watch and here are some titles I discovered from MC users:

Rabid (1977)
Buffalo 66 (1998)
Iced (1988)
The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973)
The Steel Helmet (1951)
Society (1989)
Ghost keeper (1982)
The Good Long Friday (1980)
Wake in Fright (1971)
The Searchers (1956)
The Dam Busters (1955)
Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)

There are many more but those are some that stand out. So yeah, I really appreciate all the film talk in GD so let’s keep it going. 👊

Buffalo 66 looks interesting. I'll see if I can find it and will watch tonight.

reply

Buffalo '66 is my #10 of all-time..

If we create movie threads, or reply to them more, I think others will talk about film instead of personal laments no one can understand (i.e. girlfriend trouble, etc).

reply

It was a great movie. So different. I can honestly say I was never disinterested.

reply

I like it so much I have a Buffalo 66 poster on my wall now. It’s an image of the picture booth scene. Damn I love this film, It’s on my top 10 favorites list also.

reply

I just finished it. I liked it. Almost could say I loved it. Felt like a mix of clerks/reservoir dogs. But with alot of its own flair.

reply

I feel like I’ve been spanning time ever since my first viewing. 😋

I'm now, always inside a tv, inside a bigger tv, ... Bowling.

Lmao!

What is this? A stick shift? I drive luxury cars that shift themselves.

Jokes aside, beautiful ending. But at times I thought it was ending then it didn't, In a good way.

Yeah, he’s so messed up from his childhood that he won’t let anyone get close to him but he got lucky by abducting a girl who was having issues too who sympathized with him. I felt like the dad singing and her dance was giving us a glimpse into her mind and how she saw things. But yeah, I really thought after he had the realization that he should go back to her that he was going to get hit by a car crossing the street. Like you, I’m glad it ended like it did. 10/10 film.

reply

Yeah I was for sure expecting a tragedy.

reply

I thought she Christiania Ricci would be suicided in the tub.

reply

lol

I like it more every time I see it... You might like John Cassavetes.. Try "A Woman Under the Influence" - it's on Youtube with a few others of his.

reply

Added to my watch list. 👍

Threads about movies seem to disappear quickly after someone posts to them, they move down off the front page. So unless I am visiting approx every 10 minutes, I don't see them. It would be nice if there was a way to see an overview of what movies/shows were posted in for the last day or the last week, like with a little red asterisk or something, so you could go to the site map and see what's new. I like the idea of having regular weekly threads. What was the spaghetti thread about?

reply

"What was the spaghetti thread about?"

A love of sketti.
