Jackie Chan saying 'what's up, my nigger?' in Rush Hour

And consequently kicking the crap out of the third-rate goons who get all pissy with him for saying what they didn't give a rat's ass about when it was Chris Tucker who said it.

Hilarious and ridiculous that scene is, especially over twenty years later.

Discuss what?

There are millions of such scenes in older movies. What are you going to do?

I am not in favour of censoring or removing such scenes. At best, a tag or title before the movie can be added to make people aware of what it contains and a disclaimer to say it is not condoned.

People should be aware that such things were common in times past. We don't do it any more, we realise it was wrong but times were different back then.

And as such, you educate people as to how and why society accepted such things back then, and how we have learned from it and moved on.

Essentially you are teaching people about history.

It's called acting. Cleavon Little had the best response to this situation in Blazing Saddles:
While filming, Burton Gilliam was at first having a difficult time saying the word nigger, especially to Cleavon Little because he really liked him. Finally after several cuts, Cleavon took him off to the side and told him it was okay because these weren’t his words. Cleavon jokingly added “if I thought you would say those words to me in any other situation we’d go to fist city but this all fun. Don’t worry about it.”

Absolutely nothing wrong with a scene like that. The idea of adding disclaimers for sensitive, little snowflakes is just laughable.

Amen!

But I would rather a disclaimer than thoughtbof censoring or banning. Its the lesser of two evils.

Leave the movie intact but just add the disclaimer. How does a disclaimer make any difference to your enjoyment of the movie?

reply

A disclaimer is not necessary, and is a surrender to the moronic PC and SJW thugs. We don't need any evils!

PS "thoughtbof"??

reply

I say again how does a disclaimer bother you as long as the movie is intact? It would be on screen for a few seconds.

Ps: thought of

A disclaimer is a comment designed to tell the viewer how to interpret or react to what they will see or experience. They are designed to influence viewers on the correct way of thinking as defined by those who author them. Once they become common, disclaimers will evolve to be more and more bold in their reach and persuasiveness. They will not stop at telling the viewer the correct way of interpreting a racial epithet used in the script. Everything that can be interpreted as controversial to some wounded interest group will have to be included lest one be treated differently than another. The number and breadth of disclaimers will serve as a shorthand for societal or cultural value. Actors, directors, and filmmakers will desire to avoid controversial subject matter that might trigger the need for disclaimers and entire ideas and story lines will go unexplored. Disclaimers are the antithesis of the free expression of the art form to which they are applied.

My short reaction to this is what the actual fuck???

I haven't seen the movie in a while, but yeah, I remember the scene being funny. People used to laugh.

Comet TV shows Quantum Leap now. Has for about 5-6 months. The n-word pops up several times, as the show often dealt with racism.i watch it regularly and have heard the word a few times. This was the late 80s and 90s. No one scoffed at the use of the word (in artz0 because it was portraying bad people. Can't be done anymore though. Times have changed.

Discuss THIS, OP.

Urgh. Again???

I suppose we could discuss how black people reclaimed a pejorative term and diluted its power by using it in their own community and how that scene riffs on that for comic effect, but it’s so fucking obvious that the only point would be to start ANOTHER thread about racism just to accentuate that MovieChat seems to be less a forum about movies by the day.

RacismChat doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue as well but it might at least be a more honest description of what this place is becoming.

Thanks for nothing, OP 🙄

I salute you, Tim. This site is so much less than what it could have been.

"Discuss."

Al the other replies seem to think you want the scene cut / censored / banned / warned .

Is that the angle?
or were you just saying "gosh wasnt that a funny scene?"

Neither. I was expecting some people would insist on that scene being banned given how oversensitive and whiny today's politically correct SJW liberal wussies are. And hoping that others would quite rightly call them out on their stupidity.

But instead it looks like most agree with me!
